Fort Lauderdale in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Crowds

Fort Lauderdale in June gives you a sea warm enough to float in for an hour and a day long enough to spend part of it doing nothing. The sun is up at 6:26 am on the 15th and sets at 8:15 pm, so a morning swim, a long lunch and a state-park walk all fit before dark.

The month also takes something back. Of May, June and July, June is the wettest in the NOAA normals, with 9.55 inches of rain, and the Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1. Neither fact cancels a trip. Both argue for putting the beach first in the day and reading the cancellation terms before you pay for a room.

Most June trips start with a flight into FLL, which the FAA classes a large hub: it boarded 17,096,131 passengers in calendar year 2024. Two nights cover the beach and two state parks, and our Florida flights guide compares it with the other airports. For a base, where to stay in Florida sorts beach blocks from inland ones.

Every air figure here comes from one real thermometer: NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012849, filed as “FT LAUDERDALE HOLLYWOOD AP”. It is a station reading, not a reanalysis grid cell. The gauge stands at the airport, about three miles inland from the sand, and it gives June an average high of 88.4°F and an average low of 76.6°F. On the beach itself, readings can differ from those numbers.

Rain falls on 10.5 days in an average June at the 0.10-inch mark, so roughly one day in three gets wet enough to notice. A true downpour of an inch or more comes on 3.0 days, about one day in ten. Across the month that adds up to 9.55 inches. Florida’s wet season tends toward afternoon storms, as our statewide calendar explains, so a dry morning is worth using for the beach.

Night and day sit 11.8°F apart, from 76.6°F to 88.4°F. A sweater stays home. Pack light cotton or linen, a rain shell that folds into a day bag, and one long-sleeved layer for air-conditioned restaurants and the plane. Sandals that can get soaked beat sneakers on a 10.5-rain-day month.

On June 15 the day runs 13 hours 49 minutes. Sunrise comes at 6:26 am Eastern Daylight Time and sunset at 8:15 pm, converted from sunrise-sunset.org’s UTC times. Dinner reservations at 7:30 pm still land in daylight, and a walk after 6 pm gets the lower sun without losing the light.

Can you swim in Fort Lauderdale in June? Sea temperature

Yes. The sea surface off Fort Lauderdale averages 85.4°F in June, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. That number is the mean of each day’s warmest reading, a shade higher than a 24-hour average, so tables built on round-the-clock means will print a lower figure for the same water. Both describe the same sea, measured two ways.

In practice the water sits 8.8°F above the average night low of 76.6°F and 3°F below the afternoon high at the gauge. You walk in without the gasp of a cold plunge and can stay in far longer than in a spring swim. Both Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson and Hugh Taylor Birch state parks keep one designated swimming area each, per the state’s 2024 inventory.

We could not verify wave or wind data for June, so we give no surf or chop forecast. What we can date is the season: NOAA’s National Hurricane Center runs it from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October and a peak on September 10. June sits early in that window. Check the tropical outlook before you fly and read our Florida safety guide for the storm basics.

How busy is Fort Lauderdale in June? Crowds and prices

Florida’s dry season runs November through April, and June falls outside it, in the wet months and inside hurricane season. We found no hotel occupancy series or monthly room-rate data for Broward County, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. The Florida best-time guide sets June against the other eleven months statewide.

Port Everglades handled over 4.7 million cruise passengers in fiscal 2025, and it is a homeport: ships start and end their sailings here. The airport and the beach hotels fill on the same two days of the week as a result. We have no booking-window data to turn into a week count, so start with the port’s sailing calendar and pick nights that avoid embarkation days.

Broward County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on rooms, filed and paid alongside the 6% Florida state sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. Budget 12% on top of the quoted room rate before any fees a property adds.

A refundable rate is the one upgrade that changes a June trip. With hurricane season open from June 1, the ability to cancel a few days out protects the whole booking, and it usually costs more than a prepaid room. Our Florida trip-cost guide prices the rest of the budget in three tiers.

June pairs an 85.4°F sea with 13 hours 49 minutes of light, so a swim can open the day at 7 am and close it at 7 pm. In May the water averages 83.1°F by the same marine measure. That 2.3°F difference is the gap between a quick dip and staying in until your fingers wrinkle.

The state’s 2024 inventory gives the specifics. Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park holds 2.2 miles of beach, 2.6 miles of hiking trail, 4,531 feet of boardwalk and 1,410 parking spaces. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is smaller: 0.1 miles of beach, 0.3 miles of trail, 60 feet of boardwalk, 275 spaces and one canoe, kayak and tube launch. Oleta River State Park, on the bay side, has 0.3 miles of beach, two paddle launches and 925 spaces. We could not read entrance fees or opening hours for any of the three.

June narrows the spread between air and water. The sea holds at 85.4°F while the afternoon air climbs to 88.4°F at the gauge, and even the night stays at 76.6°F. Walk Eula Johnson’s 2.6 miles of trail soon after the 6:26 am sunrise, then get into the water as the heat builds. Take the kayak out from Hugh Taylor Birch’s launch before the rain odds rise.

Broward County runs more than 50 regional parks, nature centers, neighborhood parks, natural areas and specialty parks on top of the three state parks. We could not verify their fee schedules, so we name none of them free. For a wider list of ideas across the state, see things to do in Florida.

Fort Lauderdale in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Be at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park near the 6:26 am sunrise, walk the 4,531-foot boardwalk and part of the trail, then swim in the designated area before 11 am. Spend the middle of the day indoors over a long lunch. Head back to the sand around 5 pm and stay for the 8:15 pm sunset. Without a car, a Broward County Transit ride costs $2.00 one way, and an All Day Pass is $5.00, bought on the bus.

Day two. Launch a kayak from Hugh Taylor Birch State Park early, then drive south to Oleta River State Park for its bay-side paddling. If one of June’s 3.0 inch-plus days arrives, keep the morning swim, move the paddle to the next dry window and eat lunch under a roof. Staying a week? The BCT 7-day pass is $20.00. Average low 73.5°F 76.6°F 77.6°F
Precipitation 5.56 in 9.55 in 5.41 in

By NOAA’s station normals, June’s high runs 2.6°F above May’s and 1.6°F below July’s, and its low sits 3.1°F above May and 1.0°F below July. The rain story is sharper. June’s 9.55 inches beat May by 3.99 inches and July by 4.14. July matches June’s rain days, 10.6 against 10.5, with barely over half the total. At sea, measured by the Open-Meteo Marine API, June is 2.3°F warmer than May and 2.7°F cooler than July.

Moving four weeks earlier to Fort Lauderdale in May buys 7.4 rain days instead of 10.5 and a trip before hurricane season opens, at the cost of an 83.1°F sea. Moving four weeks later to Fort Lauderdale in July brings an 88.1°F sea and 5.41 inches of rain, with a 90.0°F afternoon high and the same odds of a wet day.

Is June a good time to visit Fort Lauderdale?

Yes, for anyone who comes to swim and likes an early start: the water is at 85.4°F and the light lasts nearly 14 hours. No, for travelers who want a string of dry afternoons or who can only book a non-refundable rate. June carries the most rain of the three early-summer months, and it sits inside hurricane season.

If the answer is no, pick May. It averages 5.56 inches of rain over 7.4 wet days, its 85.8°F high is gentler, and it falls before the June 1 start of the hurricane season. The sea gives up 2.3°F and still averages 83.1°F in the daily maxima.

June lets you swim at 7 am in 85.4°F water and still have daylight for a second swim at 8 pm.

The last word

Pick your nights around the cruise calendar, pay a little more to keep the room refundable, and plan the water for the morning. For a night closer to the paddling, Oleta River State Park rents 14 cabins on the bay side, so you can wake up in a state park and still be inside the metro area. Bring a rain shell and a swimsuit you do not mind wearing twice a day.
