FLORIDA · BLUE SPRING · MARCH
The afternoon air averages 78.4°F in March, and the spring under it read 74.3°F (23.5°C) when the USGS gauge in the run was checked on September 11, 2026. That gauge reads close to the same figure on any day of the year. What moves between January and July at Blue Spring is never the water. It is what you carry on the boardwalk before nine in the morning.
February runs 4.1 degrees cooler by day and April runs 4.8 degrees warmer, so the choice between the three is a choice about air, not about the swim. The constant all year is the gate: the state counts 187 parking spaces, and when the lot fills the gate closes. Below are the March normals, the three-month comparison and a two-day plan built around a 7:35 p.m. sunset.

MARCH AT A GLANCE · BLUE SPRING
March gives you 78.4°F afternoons over water that sits near 74.3°F all year, the mildest swim-and-walk combination before April’s heat, provided you reach the gate before 187 spaces are gone.
AIR NORMALS 1991-2020 · 4.0 RAIN DAYS · 12H02 OF DAYLIGHT ON MAR 15
Go for: a swim that feels warm at 8 a.m. against a 58.3°F dawn, plus a noon walk on 3,050 feet of boardwalk that April turns sweaty.
Think twice before: planning the day around a gate time or a ticket price. We could not verify either, and the park closes its lot without notice.

Every air figure here comes from one thermometer: the NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012841, Orlando Executive Airport, about 27 miles (44 km) from the spring. That is a real gauge rather than a reanalysis grid cell, and it is still not the parking lot. The water figures come from inside the run itself, USGS station 02235500.
Blue Spring weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days
| March at Blue Spring (air, 1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 78.4°F |
| Average low | 58.3°F |
| Total precipitation | 2.74 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.7 |
| Daylight, Mar 15 | 12h 02m · 7:32 a.m. to 7:35 p.m. |
NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put March at 78.4°F by day and 58.3°F at night, with 2.74 inches of rain across the month. The same record gives February 2.06 inches and April 2.70, so March is the wettest of the three by a narrow margin. Those are airport numbers from Orlando Executive, not readings taken under the oaks, and shade along the run will run cooler than the tarmac that produced them.
Four days in an average March record at least a tenth of an inch. Call it rain roughly one day in eight, and usually the sort that costs you an hour under a shelter rather than an afternoon. The heavier kind, an inch or more inside a single day, turns up 0.7 times in an average March, so about seven Marches in ten deliver one genuine soaking and three deliver none at all.
Twenty degrees separate the average afternoon from the average dawn, 78.4°F against 58.3°F. Pack for both ends: a fleece or a sweatshirt you will be carrying by eleven, a towel that has to dry in shade rather than on a hot rail, and a second dry shirt if you plan to swim before the air warms up. Sandals alone are optimistic for a 58-degree start on wet boards.
Daylight on March 15 runs 12 hours and 2 minutes, sunrise at 7:32 a.m. and sunset at 7:35 p.m. local time. The useful part ends earlier than the sun does. Once the light leaves the run, the water no longer looks like the photographs, and a wet swimsuit at 6 p.m. meets air that is already sliding back toward the overnight figure.
How warm is Blue Spring in March?
Highs average 78.4°F and lows 58.3°F, a spread of 20.1 degrees inside one day. The spring sits outside that swing entirely. The USGS gauge in the run, station 02235500, read 74.3°F (23.5°C) on September 11, 2026, and the record holds it close to that figure year round. The reason is volume: 168 cubic feet per second leave the vent, replacing the water faster than any season can work on it.
At eight in the morning the air is near 58°F and the water is sixteen degrees warmer, so the first swim of the day is the kind you step into gratefully. By three the ratio has flipped: 78.4°F air against 74.3°F water, and the same spring reads cool at the ladder. Dress for the morning walk and swim on the way out, or swim early and spend the warm hours dry.
We found no count of freezing nights in the normals we read, so we give no frost figure for March. What the record does give is the monthly average low at 58.3°F, a figure sitting 26 degrees above freezing. Cold snaps happen in central Florida in March, and a single chilly dawn does nothing to the water temperature anyway.
How busy is Blue Spring in March? Crowds and parking
March closes out the dry half of the Florida year, the stretch our best-time guide works through state by state. Past that calendar fact we have nothing priced: no occupancy series, no monthly room rates for the area. So we crown no month expensive and no month cheap. The one hard demand number anyone publishes is physical, and the state counts it: 187 parking spaces.
For a day visit, the alarm clock is the reservation. Those 187 spaces are the whole day’s supply, and the gate closes when they are gone rather than when the park is full of people. Six cabins are the entire lodging inventory the state counts inside the boundary, which makes them the first line of any trip built around the spring.
On the tax question we have to leave you short: we could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the area, so we quote no percentage here. Florida charges state sales tax plus a county tourist development levy that changes across county lines, and the statewide shape of a budget sits in our trip cost guide rather than in a figure we would be inventing.
Paying more changes exactly one thing in March: where you sleep. A cabin puts you inside the boundary at 7:32 a.m. instead of in the line outside it. We could not verify the nightly rate, the entrance fee or the opening hour, because floridastateparks.org answered our automated reads with a 403 on September 11, 2026. Phone the park before you plan a morning around a gate time.
Things to do in Blue Spring in March

March lets you do both halves of the park in a single visit. A 78.4°F afternoon is warm enough to make the water attractive and mild enough that 3,050 feet of boardwalk at noon stays pleasant. April’s 83.2°F afternoons push the walking to either end of the day, and February’s 74.3°F afternoons rarely build the heat that makes a 74-degree swim feel like a reward.
Florida’s 2024 recreational facilities inventory counts what is actually here: 1 designated swimming area, 3,050 feet of boardwalk, 3 observation platforms, 1 launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 6 cabins and the 187 spaces. Florida Statutes 373.802(5) defines a class called Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring.
The run in March is the same run as in July: 74.3°F, 168 cubic feet per second, clear because the water is replaced faster than it can cloud. The air is what the month changes. At a 58.3°F dawn a wet swimsuit is a poor decision before nine, and at 78.4°F in mid-afternoon it dries in the time it takes to walk back along the boards to the lot.
Nothing inside the fence carries a second ticket in the state’s inventory: the three platforms, the boardwalk and the swim area all come with whatever the gate charges, and the gate charge is the number we could not read. Manatee counts sit in the same box, since FWC publishes them through a page that renders client-side. We give no total and no dates. Our manatee guide carries the statewide rules.
Blue Spring in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the gate, not at breakfast: sunrise is 7:32 a.m. and the lot holds 187 cars. Walk the boardwalk first, while the air is still near 58°F and the platforms are empty. Swim from about 10:30, when the air has climbed past the water and the ladder stops being a shock. Eat late, take the platforms again at 4 p.m., and use the light until it goes at 7:35 p.m.
Day two belongs to the launch: canoe, kayak or tube in the warm middle of the day, then the swim area once you are back. If you land on one of the month’s four wet days, a tenth of an inch usually costs an hour under cover and the run looks the same afterward. The 0.7 days that bring an inch or more are the ones that end a visit, so keep a dry bag and a flexible afternoon. Our getting-around guide has the drive times.
Blue Spring in March vs February and April
| February | March | April | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 74.3°F | 78.4°F | 83.2°F |
| Average low | 54.3°F | 58.3°F | 62.8°F |
| Precipitation | 2.06 in | 2.74 in | 2.70 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.4 | 4.0 | 3.9 |
| Spring water | about 74.3°F | about 74.3°F | about 74.3°F |
Across the three months the air climbs 8.9 degrees and the water does not move. February’s average high, 74.3°F, matches the gauge reading in the spring to the decimal, so a February swim is a sideways step in temperature. March adds 4.1 degrees of air over the water, April another 4.8 on top. Rain sorts differently: February is driest at 2.06 inches over 3.4 wet days, March wettest at 2.74 inches over 4.0.
Shift back four weeks and you gain the driest month of the three and cooler walking, at the cost of afternoons that never rise above the water temperature. Our February page makes that case in full. Shift forward and April hands you 83.2°F and 62.8°F nights, warm enough to swim at any hour and warm enough to make the noon boardwalk work.
Is March a good time to visit Blue Spring?
For anyone who wants to swim and walk on the same day, March is the strongest of the three. For a traveler who wants to float for hours with no thought about the air, April is the safer bet at 83.2°F. And for anyone whose trip depends on a guaranteed parking space on a Saturday, no month here is reliable, because 187 spaces is 187 spaces in every season.
If the answer for you is no, pick your direction from the thing you dislike. Heat sensitivity points backward to February, 74.3°F by day and 2.06 inches of rain. Cold water points forward to April, where the 83.2°F air makes the same 74.3°F spring feel like relief instead of a decision. Families weighing the whole trip can start from our Florida with kids guide.
Of the three months, only March puts the afternoon air clearly above the water, 78.4°F against 74.3°F, while keeping the middle of the day under eighty for the walk.
The last word
Book the date for the air and plan the day for the gate. Florida’s statute protects every historic first-magnitude spring as an Outstanding Florida Spring, and adds six more named individually in the text, which tells you how short that list is and how many cars want to see one item on it. Call ahead to confirm the fee and hours. Then arrive early: 187 spaces is the whole day’s supply.
