At 76.9°F most people swim comfortably. Anyone who chills quickly, or plans an hour of snorkeling, may want a thin wetsuit or a rash guard, since a daily-maxima figure overstates what the water feels like at dawn.
Our sources carry no wind or swell figures for May, so we cannot say how choppy the bay gets on a given afternoon. Ask the boat operator the evening before you go.
How busy is La Paz in May? Crowds and prices

The 2026-2027 season in the Bahia de La Paz refuge runs from October 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, and May falls after it. A federal management plan covers three seasons between 2026 and 2029, and we found no dates for the later ones, so check SEMARNAT’s current notice.
Isla Espiritu Santo, in the Bay of La Paz, has been a national park since 2007 and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California” since 2005. It is reached by boat. The malecón and the bay are the places the SMN station’s normals describe best, so the 95.5°F and 62.4°F figures apply there most directly.
The air changes more than the water through the season. Sea readings from the marine API run 72.6°F in April, 76.9°F in May and 81.4°F in June, which makes May 4.3 degrees warmer than April and 4.5 degrees short of June. For a day on the water, that means a swim stop in comfortable water, and a sun that is already strong.

Day one, on foot and in the water. Start at sunrise (5:36 a.m.) on the malecón, when the air is closest to the 62.4°F average low. Swim or snorkel in mid-morning while the sea is at 76.9°F. Spend midday and the early afternoon indoors in the cooled room, since highs average 95.5°F. Head back to the waterfront in the late afternoon and stay for the 6:58 p.m. sunset.
Day two, a boat day toward Isla Espiritu Santo. Leave early while the air is still mild, and keep the swim stop for the warmest part of the morning. Rain is unlikely to change the plan (0.6 days in an average May). Wind and swell are the likelier disruptions, and our sources carry no May figures for them, so ask the operator. Is May a good time to visit La Paz?
Yes for beach, boat and swimming trips: 0.6 rain days, a 76.9°F sea and 13 hours 22 minutes of daylight on May 15. No for whale shark swims and for long walks in 95.5°F highs. The U.S. State Department rates Baja California Sur Level 2 (exercise increased caution, due to terrorism and crime) and notes no specific restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in the state. The advisory was reissued May 29, 2026.
Pick April if the heat is the problem: highs of 90.0°F and a 72.6°F sea, with the month falling inside the 2026-2027 whale shark window that closes April 30, 2027. Whale sharks are the goal? One fixed timetable to build around if you cross to the mainland: Baja Ferries sails La Paz-Topolobampo Monday through Friday, with check-in at 12:00, departure at 13:30 and arrival at 20:30. The Saturday sailing checks in at 21:30, departs at 23:00 and arrives at 08:00 the next morning.
