The Space Coast in December: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Booking

Travelers on the Space Coast in mid-December get a sunrise over the Atlantic at 7:09 a.m., a sea that hovers near 70°F, and afternoons mild enough to spend whole days outdoors at Kennedy Space Center. Shorts at noon, a fleece at dawn: the trip packs differently from a summer one, and it feels different too.

You’ve already picked the coast, so the open question is the date. Most trips here start at Orlando International (MCO), the airport our Florida overview pairs with the Space Coast, and the same overview suggests one to three nights for the coast within a wider Florida trip. Below: what December gives, what it takes away, and what four weeks either side would change.

Go for: long outdoor days at Kennedy Space Center, dawn on the beach without a pre-dawn alarm, and a sea you can still enter briskly.

Think twice before: planning a warm-water beach week. The sea averages 69.9°F even at its warmest hour of the day, and inland nights average 52.9°F.

Every figure here for air temperature and rain comes from a single thermometer at Orlando International, the same airport most visitors fly into. Sea readings come from a marine model instead, and daylight times from a sunrise calculator. Each source is named where its numbers appear.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information set the December normals at 73.8°F for the average high and 52.9°F for the low, with 2.48 inches of precipitation, averaged over 1991 to 2020. They come from station USW00012815, a real thermometer at Orlando International rather than a reanalysis grid cell, and it stands about 60 km inland. On the sand at Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral, expect afternoons a little cooler and nights a little milder, plus a sea breeze Orlando never gets.

Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 3.7 days in an average December, roughly one day in eight. Spread over a four-night stay, that comes to about half a wet day. Heavy rain is rarer: a day with an inch or more averages 0.7 per December. Keep one indoor block in reserve, such as the Kennedy Space Center halls, and plan everything else outdoors.

Between the 73.8°F afternoon and the 52.9°F dawn sits a swing of 20.9°F at the Orlando station. Pack for both ends of it: shorts and sunscreen for the middle of the day, a fleece or light jacket for sunrise on the beach and for evenings outside. On the coast the night side of that swing runs softer, so the jacket matters most on early starts and inland drives.

On December 15 the Space Coast gets about 10 hours 23 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 12:09 UTC and sets at 22:32 UTC, or 7:09 a.m. and 5:32 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Plan to be off the beach by 5:30 and heading to dinner soon after. At the other end of the day, a beach walk before breakfast needs no alarm set in the dark.

Can you swim in the Space Coast in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the December sea surface off the Space Coast at 69.9°F, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade cooler. It also comes from a marine model over a different decade than the NOAA air normals, so the two should not be read as one dataset.

Wading into water around 70°F feels cool on the first plunge and easier after a minute or two of swimming. Aim for midafternoon, when sea and air both sit near their daily peaks, and keep a towel and a dry layer within reach, because the air cools quickly after the 5:32 p.m. sunset. Anyone planning an hour or more in the water will be more comfortable in a thin wetsuit.

We found no verified December averages for wind or swell on this stretch of coast, so we give none. Check the National Weather Service Melbourne surf zone forecast on the morning you plan to swim. It carries the day’s rip current risk and wave heights, and on the Atlantic side both change from one day to the next.

How busy is the Space Coast in December? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel occupancy series or monthly room rates for Brevard County, so we rank no month cheap or dear. The calendar still tells you plenty. Our Florida overview marks holiday weeks as the state’s annual peaks and early December as a quiet stretch, and December holds both: two calm weeks, then the school break around Christmas and New Year’s.

Book the two halves of the month differently. For the first half, flexible dates and a short lead time are a reasonable bet, and you can wait for the forecast before committing. For nights between December 24 and January 1, reserve at least six weeks ahead (est.), and give flights into MCO for those dates the same urgency. Our Florida trip-cost guide sets out the budget tiers.

We could not verify Brevard County’s current tourist development tax rate, so we give no percentage. When you compare stays, ask for the all-in nightly price with taxes and any resort fee included. Our Florida overview warns that resort fees and parking add real money per night at oceanfront properties.

If one budget line deserves more money in December, make it an east-facing, ocean-view room. With sunrise at 7:09 a.m., the best light of the day arrives while you are still holding your first coffee, and from a balcony you can watch it every morning without leaving the room. A street-facing room saves money and gives up that view for the whole stay. Our Florida where-to-stay guide covers the choice of base.

Things to do in the Space Coast in December

In December you can spend whole days outdoors here. Afternoons near 73.8°F at the Orlando station make hours of walking between exhibits, boardwalks and beach comfortable, far from the 90-degree heat of the wet season our Florida overview describes. The early 5:32 p.m. sunset also leaves long dark evenings for stargazing from the beach or, if one is scheduled, a night launch.

Start with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island, the headline of most trips here. Around it, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and its Black Point Wildlife Drive draw birders in the cooler months, and Canaveral National Seashore offers undeveloped beach at Playalinda and Apollo Beach. In town, the Cocoa Beach Pier reaches out over the surf. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of the four, so we quote none. Check each operator the week you travel, and see our Florida things-to-do guide for the wider list.

At dawn on Black Point Wildlife Drive or Playalinda, the Orlando station’s 52.9°F average low is the number to dress for. By early afternoon the sea at 69.9°F and the inland high at 73.8°F sit less than 4°F apart. Go to the refuge in the hours after sunrise, and save the hour after lunch for a swim at Apollo Beach or Playalinda.

We could not verify which beach parking lots charge in December, so we name no free lot. Two things cost nothing wherever you park: the 7:09 a.m. sunrise over the Atlantic from any public beach access, and a launch seen from the sand if one falls during your stay. We have no verified December launch dates, so check the launch provider’s calendar before you book nights around one.

The Space Coast in December: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Be on the sand at Cocoa Beach by 7:00 a.m. for the 7:09 sunrise, jacket on, then breakfast in town. Drive to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for opening (check the hour when you book) and give it the core of the day, while the air climbs toward its 73.8°F peak and the outdoor exhibits are pleasant. Leave around 4:00 p.m., walk the Cocoa Beach Pier before the 5:32 p.m. sunset, and reserve dinner for after dark.

Day two. Head out at first light to Black Point Wildlife Drive in the refuge, then continue to Playalinda for a midafternoon swim while the sea sits near its 69.9°F daily-maximum average. With 3.7 rain days in an average December, one wet day on a trip is plausible. If it lands on day one, swap the order: move the Kennedy Space Center indoor halls to the rainy day and keep the refuge and the beach for the clearer one. Both days need a car, as our Florida overview notes for the Space Coast.

The Space Coast in December vs November and January

Measure November December January
Average high (NOAA, Orlando Intl) 78.3°F 73.8°F 71.8°F
Average low (NOAA, Orlando Intl) 58.2°F 52.9°F 49.5°F
Precipitation (NOAA, Orlando Intl) 1.79 in 2.48 in 2.48 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.0 3.7 4.0
Sea surface, daily maxima (Open-Meteo, 2015-2024) 74.9°F 69.9°F 67.8°F

Across the three months the NOAA station at Orlando International cools steadily: average highs run 78.3°F in November, 73.8°F in December and 71.8°F in January, with lows of 58.2°F, 52.9°F and 49.5°F. Precipitation rises from 1.79 inches in November to 2.48 inches in both December and January, while rain days go from 3.0 to 3.7 to 4.0. The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea at 74.9°F, 69.9°F and 67.8°F, so the water loses 5.0°F between November and December and another 2.1°F into January.

Moving four weeks earlier into November gains 4.5°F on the afternoon high and 5.0°F in the sea, with 0.7 fewer rain days, but it falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs to November 30 according to our Florida overview. Moving four weeks later into January costs 2.0°F on the high and 2.1°F in the sea, adds 0.3 rain day and brings the average low down to 49.5°F. Once New Year’s has passed, the school-holiday nights are behind you too.

Is December a good time to visit the Space Coast?

Yes, for most travelers. December suits trips built around Kennedy Space Center, birding at Merritt Island, beach walks and sunrise, all under afternoons in the low 70s at the Orlando station. Families do well too, provided the Christmas week is booked early. Anyone whose picture of the trip is long, warm swims should look elsewhere on the calendar: a sea averaging 69.9°F at its daily peak is brisk for a long swim.

For swimmers, November is the better bet, with the sea averaging 74.9°F and the afternoon high 78.3°F at the same sources. Book it refundable, because the hurricane season runs through November 30, and read our Florida best-time guide for the full year.

Of the three months, only December combines a closed hurricane season with a sea within a degree of 70°F.

The last word

Settle the holiday question first: if your dates touch Christmas or New Year’s, book those nights and the MCO flights before anything else, and ask for the room that faces the ocean. Then pack one warm layer more than Florida seems to demand. At the Orlando International station, 0.3 nights in an average December fall to 32°F or below, and although the coast runs milder after dark, a 7:09 a.m. sunrise on the beach still calls for a fleece and a hot coffee.
