De Leon Springs in February: Weather, Rain Days and a Two-Day Plan

February hands De Leon Springs a 74.3°F afternoon and a 54.3°F dawn, and it does it on the driest month of the local winter: 2.06 inches of rain in an average year. That is warmer than January, four degrees short of March, and wetter than neither. The cost is daylight. On February 15 the sun is up at 7:02 a.m. and gone by 6:16 p.m., which leaves 11 hours 13 minutes to spend.

Most people come for a day from the Orlando or Daytona side. A few book two nights in DeLand and slow the trip down, and February rewards the second night for one reason: you can spend the whole of it outdoors, which the wet-season months of May through October cannot promise. Swimming is the part that needs timing, not the walking.

February is the driest of the three winter months here: 74.3°F afternoons, 54.3°F dawns, 2.06 inches of rain, and daylight from 7:02 a.m. to 6:16 p.m. Take a DeLand room and keep the water for after lunch.

Go for: whole days outdoors in the driest winter month, afternoons that reach 74.3°F, and a two-night trip from DeLand that never needs a rain plan bigger than one swapped afternoon.

Think twice before: booking a dawn swim. The average February low is 54.3°F, and the air does not reach its 74.3°F mean until the middle of the afternoon.

The normals here come from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly series: an average high of 74.3°F, an average low of 54.3°F, 2.06 inches of precipitation. Those are station measurements from a real thermometer, not a reanalysis grid cell, and the thermometer is not in town. It is gauge USW00012841, the Orlando Executive station that also serves Blue Spring State Park, about 9 miles south in the same DeLand country. Read them as the area normal rather than a reading taken at the spring run itself.

An average February logs 3.4 days with at least a tenth of an inch, so measurable rain turns up roughly one day in eight. Across a four-day trip that is one damp morning, and it usually behaves like a gray band moving through rather than the stacked afternoon thunderstorms of summer. Plan the week and keep one afternoon loose, and the rain costs you very little.

Between the mean low and the mean high sits exactly 20 degrees, and a February bag has to cover both ends. A fleece and long pants for the first two hours, short sleeves and a hat for the middle of the day, and a second towel if anyone swims, because a wet towel at 54°F stays wet until noon.

Daylight on February 15 runs 11 hours 13 minutes, sunrise at 7:02 a.m. and sunset at 6:16 p.m. local. The light goes flat and the air starts falling back toward the overnight figure well before that sunset, so anything you want to do outdoors should be finished, not started, at five.

How warm is De Leon Springs in February?

Two numbers carry the month: a mean high of 74.3°F and a mean low of 54.3°F, twenty degrees apart. Both are averages over thirty Februaries, so a front can park a day well under the mean and a still, sunny afternoon can sit above it.

In practice that means you dress twice. At 7 a.m. you want sleeves and something over them, and locals will be in jackets while you are still deciding. By 1 p.m., with the air near 74.3°F and the sun high, the jacket is in the trunk and the question is whether to get in the water. That question belongs to the afternoon.

On frost, we have less than we would like. No count of nights at or below freezing appears in the February normals we read, and we could not verify one elsewhere, so we give no number. What we can say is that the mean low sits 22 degrees above freezing, which makes a hard freeze the exception rather than the February baseline.

How busy is De Leon Springs in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

February falls inside Florida’s dry season, which the National Weather Service dates November through April and our state guide treats as the season line. That much is calendar. The price cycle is not something we can chart: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for De Leon Springs or Volusia County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive.

Without rate data, the lever worth pulling is flexibility rather than timing. With 3.4 wet days in 28, a refundable room lets you trade a gray Saturday for a bright Sunday at no cost, and a base in DeLand keeps that trade to a short drive instead of a redrawn day. We could not verify visitor counts by day of week, so our preference for a midweek pair is editorial judgment, not a measurement.

On lodging tax we came up empty: we could not verify the Volusia County rate, so we quote no percentage. Leave a line for it in the budget anyway, and use our Florida trip-cost guide for the parts of a week we can price with confidence.

One upgrade genuinely changes February: sleeping within a few miles of the springs instead of in the Orlando corridor. The good air runs from mid-morning to about four, and a room you can walk out of at eight puts you at the water during the 74.3°F stretch rather than on the road through it. Our where-to-stay guide sorts the wider region.

The month’s real gift is a full day outdoors, start to finish. At 2.06 inches, February is drier than both neighboring months, and the wet season with its daily storm clock is five months off. Cold air is also what drives manatees into Florida’s warm spring runs every winter, and our manatee guide names the places and the rules for watching them without breaking the law.

De Leon Springs State Park is the spring the town is named for, and Blue Spring State Park sits about 9 miles south, under the same weather gauge that produced the figures above. We could not verify either park’s entry fee, opening hours or water temperature, so we give no price and no degree reading for them. Check the park operators before you drive; our Florida things-to-do guide has the wider shortlist.

What the month changes is the air, not the water. A Florida spring holds its temperature all year while February swings twenty degrees between dawn and mid-afternoon, so the same spring feels like the warm thing in the landscape at 7 a.m. and the cool one at 2 p.m. We could not verify the vent temperature at De Leon Springs, so take the direction from us and the degrees from the park.

On anything free this month we came up short too: no fee-free February date could be verified for these parks, so we promise none. What is not rationed is the light, 11 hours 13 minutes of it on the 15th, and the roads and lakeshore of the DeLand country cost nothing to drive at dusk.

De Leon Springs in February: a two-day itinerary

Back-load day one. The 7:02 a.m. sunrise arrives at about 54.3°F, so give the first two hours to breakfast and a walk rather than to water. Late morning the air climbs toward its 74.3°F mean, and roughly 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. is the warmest stretch of the day: that is the swimming block, and nothing should be scheduled against it. Keep the 9-mile run south to Blue Spring for the flat light after four, and be finished by 6:16 p.m.

Day two, flip the order if the sky is gray. About six February days in seven record under a tenth of an inch at the gauge, and the wet ones tend to clear in half-days: take the morning indoors around DeLand, watch the radar over lunch, then move the outdoor block to whichever half looks better. If neither does, you have lost one afternoon from a trip whose other day was dry.

De Leon Springs in February vs January and March

Month Average high Average low Precipitation Days with 0.10 in or more
January 71.2°F 51.8°F 2.61 in 3.8
February 74.3°F 54.3°F 2.06 in 3.4
March 78.4°F 58.3°F 2.74 in 4.0

February sits 3.1 degrees above January by day and 2.5 above it by night, and it trails March by 4.1 and 4.0. On rain it beats both outright: 2.06 inches against January’s 2.61 and March’s 2.74, with 3.4 wet days against 3.8 and 4.0. No water temperature is available for the spring itself from any source we could verify, so the comparison stops at the air, and all three columns come from the same NOAA station series.

Shift four weeks later and you buy four degrees of afternoon and four of night, which is the difference between a brisk swim and a pleasant one. You pay for it with 0.68 inch more rain and a little more company on spring break weekends. Shift four weeks earlier and you save nothing on rain, since January is the wettest of the three, and you lose three degrees at both ends of the day.

Is February a good time to visit De Leon Springs?

Yes, for walkers, wildlife watchers and anyone building a two-night stop into a wider Florida drive: the driest month of the three, 74.3°F afternoons, and a dry-season sky. No, if the trip is built around hours in the water or breakfast outdoors. A 54.3°F morning does not flatter either plan, and the warm window is narrow enough that a late start wastes it.

If that is you, take March. At 78.4°F by day and 58.3°F at night it lengthens the comfortable stretch by hours, and the extra 0.68 inch of rain arrives in more days rather than heavier ones, at 4.0 wet days against February’s 3.4.

What February alone gives you is the driest four weeks of the Florida winter here, 2.06 inches and 3.4 wet days, under afternoons that still reach the mid-seventies.

The last word

Book the DeLand room, not the one an hour away, and keep one afternoon unscheduled: those two decisions do more for a February trip than any packing choice. And one figure we have kept back until now says why the month is so forgiving. Only 0.3 day in an average February records an inch of rain or more, which is a genuine soaking in roughly one February out of three. Ride it out over lunch and the boardwalk is dry again by two.
