Manatee Springs in October: Weather, Water Temperature and Rain Days

October is the month the air at Manatee Springs finally lets go. The average high drops to 82.2°F from September’s 88.0, the rain total falls from 5.82 inches to 2.23, and the spring goes on doing what it does every month of the year: pushing out water at 72.9°F, as the USGS gauge read it on September 11, 2026.

So the date changes the walk to the water, not the water. October also sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season, open until November 30. We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count for this park, so no dollar figure and no animal tally appear below. What we do have is dated, named and measured.

October drops the afternoon air to 82.2°F and cuts the rain to 2.23 inches while the spring still reads near 72.9°F: the warm half of the year at its most comfortable here.

Go for: air that no longer beats the water by fifteen degrees, rain cut to well under half of September’s, and a dawn walk at 59.9°F next to water thirteen degrees warmer.

Think twice before: planning a swim day. The Florida DEP’s 2024 facilities inventory lists no designated swimming area for this park and no canoe, kayak or tube launch.

The park’s year-round basics, the drive in and where the spring sits belong to our Manatee Springs guide. If you are weighing four weeks earlier, September runs 5.8°F hotter by day and takes more than twice the rain.

Every air figure here comes from NOAA’s NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020, station USW00012833 at Cross City Airport, about 27 miles from the spring. That is a real thermometer at a real airfield rather than a reanalysis grid cell, and it is still 27 miles away: read 82.2°F as the regional afternoon and 59.9°F as the regional dawn, not as a reading taken at the vent. October’s precipitation normal at the same station is 2.23 inches.

In an average October, 3.7 days record at least a tenth of an inch. Call it measurable rain about one day in eight, against one day in four in September, when the count runs to 7.6 days. Florida’s wet season is winding down here rather than finished, and the Atlantic hurricane season stays open until November 30, so a fall booking you cannot move is still a bet. Our statewide timing guide makes the refundable-booking case at length.

There are 22.3°F between the average high and the average low, and that gap decides the bag more than the rain does. A long-sleeve layer for the first two hours, a shirt for the rest of the day, and a towel you do not mind carrying around. A 59.9°F morning and an 82.2°F afternoon are two different visits to the same patch of north Florida, and people who pack for one of them spend half the day uncomfortable.

On October 15 the sun comes up at 7:32 a.m. and goes down at 7:02 p.m. local time: 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight, calculated from the published sunrise and sunset. Seven o’clock is the hard edge of the day, and the hour before it is the one to keep free. Anything you leave until four in the afternoon is competing with a light budget that shortens by a few minutes every day through the month.

How warm is Manatee Springs in October?

82.2°F by mid-afternoon, 59.9°F before sunrise, 22.3°F between the two. The spring sits outside that swing altogether. USGS station 02323566 read 72.9°F (22.7°C) on September 11, 2026, and that is one instantaneous reading rather than a monthly average. The same gauge lands close to that number on any day you look, in any month: a spring has no seasons, the air above it does.

Put the two together and the day runs backwards from summer. At eight in the morning the water is the warm thing in the park, 13.0°F above the dawn air. By three in the afternoon it is the cool thing, 9.3°F below the high. Long sleeves early, a shirt by noon, shoes with grip for wet limestone, and sunscreen for an afternoon that reaches the low eighties even in the second half of the month.

We have no freeze-day count for October at the Cross City station, so we give no frequency for frost. What the normals do say is that the October low averages 59.9°F and November’s averages 49.2°F, both a long way above freezing. Genuine cold at this latitude is a December and January subject, not an October one.

How busy is Manatee Springs in October, and what does it cost?

October falls in the handover: the wet season closing out, the dry season opening in November, a pattern our Florida calendar dates statewide. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for this part of north Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Anyone who tells you October is the bargain window at a spring this size is working from the same absence of data we are.

What is datable is the risk. Hurricane season runs through November 30, so take the room with a cancellation clause and check the tropics the week before you drive. For campsite and lodging lead times we verified nothing at all, so no number of weeks goes in this paragraph. Statewide budgeting, gas included, sits in our Florida trip cost guide.

We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or any lodging-tax rate for the area, so no price appears anywhere here. On September 11, 2026 floridastateparks.org answered our automated reads with a 403, and the state’s manatee page renders client-side, which left us nothing we would stand behind from either. Phone the park the day before and ask for the gate hours and the per-vehicle rate.

The money that actually shapes an October day here goes into the tank rather than the gate. Manatee Springs is a car destination like most of the state’s springs, and our getting-around guide covers the tolls and the drive times. The upgrade worth paying for is a second day: 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight does not stretch, and an afternoon lost to a shower comes back the next morning at the same 72.9°F.

Florida law keeps a protected category called Outstanding Florida Springs, defined at Florida Statutes 373.802(5) as every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey identifies, plus six written into the statute by hand. We did not verify which list Manatee Springs appears on today. What October gives that July cannot is the air above it: September’s average high stands 15.1°F over the water, October’s stands 9.3°F over it, and the rain has dropped by more than half.

Two public records describe the site itself. USGS station 02323566 read 72.9°F and 128 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, and that volume is why the water stays clear: it is replaced faster than it can cloud. The Florida DEP’s 2024 Recreational Facilities Inventory, 374 pages of it, lists no designated swimming area for this park and no canoe, kayak or tube launch. Plan a looking-and-walking day rather than a paddling one.

Nothing October does reaches the water, and the gauge is the proof. The air is the whole variable: 15.1°F above the spring in September, 9.3°F in October, 1.5°F by November. That closing gap is the season here. The animals the park is named for are a cold-season arrival in Florida’s springs, covered in our manatee guide, and we could not verify a single October count at this spring.

One thing costs nothing and is worth doing before you leave the house: the USGS publishes station 02323566 in near real time, free to anyone. Read the temperature and the discharge on the morning of your drive and you will know what the water is doing before you turn off the highway. As for what the park waives in October, we could not verify a fee at all, so we cannot tell you what is free at the gate.

Manatee Springs in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise on October 15 is 7:32 a.m., the first hour is the coldest of the day at around 59.9°F, and that is the hour when the 72.9°F spring is the warmest thing in the park. Walk early while the air is in the sixties. Sit by the water through the middle of the day as it climbs toward 82.2°F. Keep the last hour before the 7:02 p.m. sunset for the run itself, then drive out after dark rather than before.

Day two needs a fallback for one case in eight. If the sky closes in, the water under it is unchanged at 72.9°F and 128 cubic feet per second, and the shift is in the footing and the drive rather than the spring. Wet limestone and a two-hour delay are the real cost of a rain morning, so move the walking to the afternoon and let the 82.2°F high dry the path. Indoor options across the state are in our Florida things-to-do guide.

Manatee Springs in October vs September and November

Measure September October November
Average high 88.0°F 82.2°F 74.4°F
Average low 69.8°F 59.9°F 49.2°F
Precipitation 5.82 in 2.23 in 2.10 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 7.6 3.7 3.4
Afternoon air above the spring 15.1°F 9.3°F 1.5°F

The three months march in one direction and the water in none. Highs fall 5.8°F from September to October, then another 7.8°F into November. Nights fall harder, 69.8°F to 59.9°F to 49.2°F. Rain collapses between September and October, 5.82 inches down to 2.23, and then barely moves, with November at 2.10. Through all three the spring reads near 72.9°F, which is the one line on the chart that refuses to slope.

Shift four weeks back and you buy summer: warm evenings at 69.8°F, longer light, and more than two and a half times the rain. Shift four weeks forward and you buy the opening of the dry season and 3.4 wet days, at the price of 49.2°F nights and an afternoon air that beats the water by only 1.5°F, so the spring stops reading as relief and starts reading as a cold plunge. October keeps the useful gap and loses September’s soaking.

Is October a good time to visit Manatee Springs?

Yes for walkers, photographers and anyone who wants the spring without September’s heat and downpours: 82.2°F afternoons, 3.7 wet days, water at 72.9°F. No for two groups. Anyone here for manatees is early, since those are a cold-season animal in Florida’s springs and we verified no October count at this one. Anyone planning a paddling day is at the wrong park, because the state’s 2024 inventory records no launch of any kind.

If the answer for you is no, the swap depends on the reason. Manatee watchers should aim at the cold months and start with our manatee guide, since the animals move when the rivers cool and the spring does not. Rain-averse visitors should take November: 2.10 inches, 3.4 wet days, the driest of the three, paid for with 49.2°F nights and a shorter afternoon.

What October holds that no other month does is the 9.3°F gap: warm enough overhead that the water still cools you, cool enough that walking to it is not a chore.

The last word

Book the day around 7:02 p.m. rather than around the forecast, and take the 7:32 a.m. start seriously, because the dawn hour is the only time the spring is warmer than the air. One figure we have not served yet: an inch of rain or more falls on 0.4 of an average October day, so roughly two Octobers in five see one real soaker. If yours is the day it lands, the gauge under the surface will still read 72.9°F.
