FLORIDA · AUGUST · TROY SPRING STATE PARK
August is the month a cold spring makes sense. The nearest official thermometer, at Cross City, averages 89.9°F in the afternoon, and the USGS gauge at Troy Spring was reading 71.4°F (21.9°C) when it was last checked. That gap of roughly 18 degrees is the whole trip: you arrive sweating, you step off into the water, and you gasp.
What August takes back is easy to list. The same normals give 8.10 inches of rain across the month and 11.5 days wet enough to measure, most of it in the Florida wet season afternoon pattern. The park has 25 parking spaces, so a hot Saturday sorts itself out early. Directions, the history of the spring and the rest of the year live in our Troy Spring guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · TROY SPRING · AUGUST
August pairs 89.9°F afternoons with water near 71.4°F, and a 25-space lot that decides your Saturday long before your swimsuit does.
HOT AND WET · 8.10 INCHES OF RAIN · WATER NEAR 71.4°F · 25 PARKING SPACES
Go for: the widest air-to-water contrast of the year, morning swims before the heat lands, and a second swim after the storm clears.
Think twice before: planning an August Saturday around a lot of 25 spaces, or counting on a dry afternoon in the wettest of the three summer months.

One caveat before the figures: every air number here comes from NOAA’s station USW00012833 at Cross City AP, about 27 miles from the spring, so read it as regional air rather than a thermometer at the swim steps. The water figure is different. It is measured in the spring itself, by a USGS gauge on site.
Troy Spring weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August measure | Value (1991-2020 normals) |
|---|---|
| Average high | 89.9°F |
| Average low | 72.9°F |
| Precipitation | 8.10 inches |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.5 |
| Days with 1 inch or more | 2.4 |
| Daylight, August 15 | 13 h 15 min |
| Spring water | about 71.4°F (USGS reading, Sept 11, 2026) |
NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals put August at a 89.9°F average high and a 72.9°F average low, with 8.10 inches of rain. Those are normals, the average of thirty Augusts at a real station, not a forecast. They tell you what a week is likely to hold. They tell you nothing about next Thursday.
An average August records at least a tenth of an inch on 11.5 days, so measurable rain lands roughly three days in eight. In practice that rarely writes off a day. It means a bright morning, a sky stacking up in the afternoon, and a hard half hour that empties the swimming area. Put the water in the morning and the driving after lunch and the rain barely touches your plans.
The day-to-night spread is 17.0°F, small enough that nothing you pack is about warmth. Pack for water and rain instead: a towel that dries fast, water shoes for the limestone, a dry bag for phone and keys, and a shell you can pull over a swimsuit while a storm passes. Sunscreen goes on at the car, because 50 feet of boardwalk is not a roof.
On August 15 the sun is up for 13 hours 15 minutes, rising at 6:58 a.m. and setting at 8:14 p.m. Eastern time. That is enough light for a swim before breakfast and another after dinner. We could not verify the park’s gate hours, so build the day around daylight and confirm what is posted when you arrive.
How warm is Troy Spring in August?
The normal high is 89.9°F, the normal low 72.9°F, a 17-degree spread that never truly cools off. Now set that low against the spring: 71.4°F in the water, 72.9°F in the air at dawn. The coldest hour of an average August night is still warmer than the water you will be swimming in at noon.
Mornings ask for a swimsuit and something light over your shoulders on the walk from the car. By three in the afternoon the ask reverses: shade, a full bottle, and the swimming area rather than the trail. Cotton stays damp all day in this humidity, so quick-dry clothes beat a cotton tee here, and a second towel beats a wet one.
Freezing is not an August question in north Florida. The NOAA normals we read carry no freeze-day count for the month, and a 72.9°F average low leaves no room for one. A cool August night here means the low 70s, which is exactly why 71.4°F water bites harder now than the same water does on a February morning.
How busy is Troy Spring in August?
August falls in the last stretch of summer break, which in Florida means families on the road and the springs doing their busiest work of the year. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the area around the park, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. The calendar is the fact; the price ranking is not ours to give.
The booking question has a short answer. We could not verify whether Troy Spring takes any reservation for day use, or what hours the gate keeps. What the state does count is the lot: 25 spaces, and when it fills, the gate closes. The useful lead time is measured in hours, not weeks. If your trip is a weekend, aim for the first hour of the day, and pick the weekday if your dates allow.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the county, so we give no percentage. Nor could we read an entrance fee: the state parks site returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026. Carry a card and some cash for whatever is posted at the entrance, and see what a Florida trip costs for the wider budget picture.
The one place where spending more changes August is where you sleep the night before. A bed within a short drive turns a 6 a.m. alarm into a 7:30 one and puts your car among the 25 before the heat arrives. Everything else the month wants is cheap: a cooler, ice, a spare towel. Getting around Florida explains why a car is not optional out here.
Things to do in Troy Spring in August

August hands you a contrast no cool month can: 89.9°F air over 71.4°F water, about 18 degrees of shock on the first step. Only July tops it, and only by a fraction (90.1°F). That gap is why summer is the season people drive out here to swim, and why a winter visit tends to be a walk with a camera rather than a swim.
The state’s facilities inventory counts what Troy Spring State Park holds, and the list is short: 1 designated swimming area, 1 launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 0.4 miles of paddling trail, 0.3 miles of hiking trail, 50 feet of boardwalk and those 25 parking spaces. Florida law also defines a protected class, Outstanding Florida Springs, covering the historic first-magnitude springs plus six named in the statute (Florida Statutes 373.802(5)).
The water does not follow the calendar. The USGS gauge read 71.4°F (21.9°C) on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that every day of the year. The air is the variable, so August changes the visit without changing the spring. A 0.3-mile trail that is a pleasant winter loop becomes a sweaty ten minutes now, and 50 feet of boardwalk is not shade for 25 cars’ worth of people.
We could not verify any fee, any free day or any dated August event at the park, so we name none. One trip we can steer you off: manatee season in Florida’s springs is winter, and we found no manatee count for Troy Spring in any case. If that is what you are after, our manatee guide points at the right months and the right springs.
Troy Spring in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the morning. Sunrise is 6:58 a.m. in mid-August, so be parked inside the first hour the gate opens and in the water by nine, while the swimming area is still quiet. Swim, dry off, eat in whatever shade you can find, then walk the 0.3-mile trail before noon. By one in the afternoon you want to be near the car rather than out on the paddling trail.
Day two belongs to the launch: kayak or tube first, the 0.4 miles of paddling trail next, back before the heat peaks. If the sky turns, wait it out in the car and go back in afterward. Light holds until 8:14 p.m., so an afternoon lost to a storm still leaves two swimmable hours, and the second swim of the day is usually the emptier one.
Troy Spring in August vs July and September
| Measure | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 90.1°F | 89.9°F | 88.0°F |
| Average low | 72.5°F | 72.9°F | 69.8°F |
| Precipitation | 7.77 in | 8.10 in | 5.82 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.6 | 11.5 | 7.6 |
| Spring water | near 71.4°F | near 71.4°F | near 71.4°F |
Side by side, August is the wettest of the three: 8.10 inches against 7.77 in July and 5.82 in September. Afternoon heat barely moves between July and August, 0.2°F on the average high. September is where the change lands. Nights fall 3.1°F to a 69.8°F average low, and wet days drop from 11.5 to 7.6. The water ignores all of it and holds near 71.4°F across the three.
Shift four weeks later and you buy nearly four drier days and cooler nights while giving up very little heat: September still averages 88.0°F in the afternoon, so the contrast with 71.4°F water stays almost intact. Shift four weeks earlier and July gives you a marginally hotter afternoon and the same pressure on the same 25 spaces. The honest gain in September is the school calendar, which thins weekday visits.
Is August a good time to visit Troy Spring?
Yes, if the swim is the point. No other season makes 71.4°F feel this good, and 13 hours of daylight lets you do it twice in one day. No, if you need a dry itinerary, a guaranteed parking space, or a real hike: 0.3 miles of trail under an 89.9°F sun is a stretch of the legs, not a day out. Families should read the lot as the constraint, as our Florida with kids guide puts it for the parks generally.
If that lands on no, take September. The same water, 88.0°F afternoons, 5.82 inches of rain instead of 8.10, and close to four fewer wet days per month. Beyond that our comparison stops, since we charted only the two neighboring months here; the wider calendar sits in the best time to visit Florida.
What August alone gives is the double swim: in the water before eight in the morning, back in it at half past seven in the evening, with the sun up until 8:14 p.m. and the air never once dropping below the low 70s in between.
The last word
Go on a weekday, and go early: 25 spaces is the only hard limit the month sets, and it settles well before lunch. One figure we have kept back, from the same NOAA normals: an average August brings 2.4 days with an inch of rain or more, the kind that clears a swimming area in minutes and then quits. Keep the afternoon loose, keep a dry towel in the car, and take the second swim once the storm has moved through.
