WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · AUGUST · HERNANDO COUNTY
You came for water that ignores the calendar, and August is the month that makes that worth the drive. At the nearest official weather station the afternoon air normals out to 90.9°F, and the nights bottom out around 72.1°F without ever really cooling. The spring run underneath all that has no season at all. The gap between the air and the water is the whole reason to plan a summer morning here rather than a winter one.
The cost of the trade sits in the rain column: 8.12 inches across the month, spread over 12.3 days that record at least a tenth of an inch. And there is a harder limit than weather. The state counts 255 parking spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and when the lot fills the gate closes, whatever the sky is doing. August days are long, 13 hours 11 minutes of them on the 15th, but the useful part starts early.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · AUGUST
Come in August for the contrast between 90.9°F air and spring water that has no season, arrive early enough to fit inside the 255-space lot, and give the afternoon to the storms.
AIR NORMALS 90.9°F / 72.1°F · 8.12 INCHES OF RAIN · 255 PARKING SPACES
Go for: early swims in water that holds its temperature year-round, one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, and daylight that runs to 8:10 p.m.
Think twice before: planning a dry afternoon outdoors: 2.7 days in an average August drop an inch of rain or more, and the gate closes for the day once the 255 spaces are gone.

The month decides more here than it looks like it should. Where to sleep, what a Florida week costs and how to drive between springs are questions of their own, and the lodging guide, the trip-cost breakdown and the getting-around guide handle them. August’s own business is heat, rain and light, in that order.
Weeki Wachee Springs weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August measure | Normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 90.9°F |
| Average low | 72.1°F |
| Precipitation | 8.12 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 12.3 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 2.7 |
| Daylight on August 15 | 13 h 11 min |
Every figure here comes from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, the 1991-2020 series for station USW00012818 at Brooksville Hernando County Airport. That is a real thermometer about 27 miles inland from the spring, not a modeled grid cell, and the two kinds of source do not always agree, least of all on overnight lows. August lands at 90.9°F for the average high, 72.1°F for the average low and 8.12 inches of precipitation. All of it describes the air. The water in the run is a separate matter.
Twelve rainy days sounds like a washout and behaves like nothing of the sort. Out of 31 days, 12.3 record at least a tenth of an inch, so most August days stay dry on the gauge. What falls arrives concentrated: 2.7 days in an average August drop an inch or more, and the 8.12-inch total comes mostly from storms that build inland after midday and then clear. Put the water in the morning and you are usually drying off before the first rumble.
Only 18.8 degrees separate the high from the low, and the low arrives near dawn and leaves fast. Nothing in the bag is for warmth. Pack instead for those 2.7 inch-plus days: a rain shell that balls up, a dry bag for phone and keys, water shoes for limestone, and a second shirt, because the first one will not dry in that humidity. Sunscreen goes on in the parking lot rather than at the water’s edge.
On August 15 the sun rises at 6:58 a.m. and sets at 8:10 p.m. local time, 13 hours 11 minutes apart. The early hours are the clear, quiet ones, and the last stretch of light runs well past the point where afternoon storms have collapsed. Take the morning block from 7 a.m. to noon and the evening one from 6 p.m. to 8:10 p.m., and the middle of the day can belong to lunch and air conditioning.
How warm is Weeki Wachee Springs in August?
The two headline figures sit 18.8 degrees apart: 90.9°F for the average afternoon, 72.1°F for the average night. Neither is extreme on paper, and both are averages over 30 Augusts, so individual afternoons run hotter and the Gulf-side humidity makes the high feel like more than its number. What does not move is the water: the spring has no season, so the only thing August changes is how good it feels to get in.
Mornings ask for what you swim in and something loose to throw over it. By two in the afternoon, with the air at its 90.9°F normal, shade becomes the thing you plan around. A hat, a long-sleeved shirt that dries, a bench under trees instead of open limestone, and a refill of water you actually drink. Nobody wins an argument with a Florida August by dressing for it.
Cold is not part of the month above the waterline. We have no count of nights at or below freezing for August at the Brooksville station, and an average low of 72.1°F sits about 40 degrees above freezing at the coolest hour of a normal day. Any chill you feel in August comes from the spring itself.
How busy is Weeki Wachee Springs in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Statewide, Florida’s price peaks land on the holiday weeks and spring break, and the dry season from November to April is when winter visitors fill the state, as our best-time guide lays out. August falls outside both: wet season on the calendar, national school break on the demand side. We found no occupancy series and no visitor counts for this park, so we crown no month the expensive one and no month the busiest.
What decides an August Saturday here is a parking lot. The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts 255 spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and once they are taken the gate closes for the day. We could not verify booking lead times or nightly rates for the area, so we give no week count for the hotel side. The 255 spaces cannot be reserved at any notice, which leaves your arrival hour as the only lever in the whole plan.
On the tax question we have to shrug. We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Hernando County, so no percentage comes from us, and a rate quoted for another Florida county does not transfer. Read the tax line on your confirmation before you treat the nightly figure as the nightly figure.
If one budget line deserves to go up in August, make it the bed. A room close enough to put you at the gate in the first hour of the day buys the swim before the heat and before the storms, and nothing else you can pay for moves the day as much. Our lodging guide sorts the regions; for this park the criterion is drive time to the gate at 7 a.m.
Things to do in Weeki Wachee Springs in August

August hands you the long end of the light and the hot half of the trade. With 13 hours 11 minutes of daylight on the 15th and an afternoon normal of 90.9°F, the water does something it cannot do in January: it pulls the heat out of you the moment you go under. Paddling the run at seven in the morning with nothing in the bag but sunscreen is a summer proposition, and the month is built for it.
The park’s own inventory is short and specific: one designated swimming area, one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 255 parking spaces. Florida law adds the wider frame. Statute 373.802(5) reserves the term Outstanding Florida Spring for every historic first-magnitude spring as determined by the Florida Geological Survey, plus six more named by hand in the text. We did not verify which of those two routes applies at Weeki Wachee, so we leave the label where the statute puts it.
None of those features changes across the year, and neither does the water in the run. The air does. Between August and September the average high falls 1.4 degrees and the rain total drops by 2.33 inches, and that is only four weeks apart. The swim area is the same limestone in March. In August, with the air at 90.9°F, it is the reason the day is bearable at all.
On what a day here costs we have to leave the line blank. The Florida State Parks site returns a 403 to automated reads, so we could not verify the entrance fee, the opening hours, or whether anything at the park is free in August. Call ahead or check the official page before you drive, and build the rest of the budget with our Florida cost guide.
Weeki Wachee Springs in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the morning block. Be at the gate by 7 a.m., an hour after the 6:58 sunrise, swim first and take the launch second while the air is still well short of its 90.9°F normal. Break for lunch and an indoor hour when the clouds stack inland after midday, the usual pattern in a month that records 8.12 inches. Come back out around six and use the light that holds until 8:10 p.m.
Day two can be slower, and it needs an escape hatch. If the sky behaves, repeat the water early and give the afternoon to the drive, with Florida’s other spring runs and coastal stops inside a reasonable radius. If the storm arrives early, and 2.7 days in an average August bring an inch or more, move the second swim to the evening block rather than waiting it out on the road, because a closed gate stays closed while the lot is full.
Weeki Wachee Springs in August vs July and September
| Measure | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 90.6°F | 90.9°F | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 72.0°F | 72.1°F | 70.1°F |
| Rainfall | 9.41 in | 8.12 in | 5.79 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 13.1 | 12.3 | 8.1 |
| Spring water | Holds year-round | Holds year-round | Holds year-round |
The three months run closer together than the season’s reputation suggests. August’s 90.9°F average high sits 0.3 degrees above July and 1.4 above September, and the three overnight normals cover a range of 2.0 degrees. Rain is where they separate. July takes 9.41 inches over 13.1 wet days, August 8.12 over 12.3, September 5.79 over 8.1. Those 4.2 fewer rainy days in September are the largest single difference between the three.
Shift four weeks forward and you drop 2.33 inches of rain and 4.2 wet days, with nights 2.0 degrees cooler. You lose evening light, and you move onto the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, dated around September 10 by NOAA, with the season itself running June 1 to November 30 as our Florida orientation sets out. Shift back into July instead and the heat barely moves, 0.3 degrees, while the rain total climbs by 1.29 inches.
Is August a good time to visit Weeki Wachee Springs?
Yes, if you are here for the water and willing to run on the month’s clock. Swimmers, paddlers and anyone with a tolerance for a 7 a.m. start get the best version of this place in August, because 90.9°F air is exactly what makes a constant-temperature spring feel like a reward. No, if your day depends on dry afternoons outdoors, if you need a parking space at eleven in the morning, or if heat and humidity are a medical matter rather than a nuisance.
If that lands on no, September is the fix rather than some distant winter week. It cuts rain to 5.79 inches and wet days to 8.1 while keeping the afternoon at 89.5°F, so the contrast between air and spring water survives nearly intact. The trade is storm risk at its seasonal peak, so book refundable and watch the tropics, as our Florida briefing advises.
Among the three, August alone pairs the hottest afternoons, at 90.9°F, with 13 hours 11 minutes of daylight over water whose temperature never changes.
The last word
Set the alarm, then the itinerary. An average August records under a tenth of an inch on roughly 19 of its 31 days, so a dry morning is likelier than the wet-season reputation implies, and the 255 spaces are the real deadline of the trip. Swim before the air reaches its 90.9°F normal and let the storm have the middle of the day. And if August is booked solid, July sits one tenth of a degree away on the high, at the price of 1.29 inches more rain.
