FLORIDA · WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · FEBRUARY
A Florida spring keeps the same water all year. The air above it does not, and February is the month when that difference does the most work: afternoons average 73.7°F at the nearest weather station, nights average 47.5°F, and the run underneath all of it goes on doing exactly what it did in July. That contrast is the reason to come in winter. It is also what catches people out at eight in the morning, standing on a limestone bank in a wet swimsuit.
The state counts what the park holds, and the list is short: one designated swimming area, one launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 255 parking spaces. February is the month when that last number stops governing your morning. Everything here is dated to the month, so lodging goes to our Florida where-to-stay guide and the driving to getting around Florida.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · FEBRUARY
February gives you 73.7°F afternoons, 47.5°F nights and the fewest wet days of the winter at a spring whose water has no season, with a 255-space lot that stops being a race.
NOAA 1991-2020 NORMALS · BROOKSVILLE STATION, ABOUT 27 MILES INLAND · AIR READINGS, NOT WATER
Go for: paddling from the park’s single launch, short swims at the one designated swim area, and a lot that summer visitors have to race for.
Think twice before: planning an all-day float. An average February brings 2.8 nights at 32°F or below to the nearest gauge, and the afternoon ceiling is 73.7°F.

Weeki Wachee Springs weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | February normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 73.7°F |
| Average low | 47.5°F |
| Total precipitation | 2.57 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.5 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.6 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 2.8 |
| Daylight on February 15 | 11 h 14 min |
Every figure here comes from one instrument: the NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012818, Brooksville Hernando County Airport, roughly 27 miles inland from the spring. February there averages a high of 73.7°F, a low of 47.5°F and 2.57 inches of precipitation. Those are air readings taken at an airfield, not water readings taken in the run, and the inland siting matters on a clear night, when the interior of Hernando County cools faster than the coast.
An average February records at least 0.10 inch of precipitation on 3.5 days, so measurable rain turns up roughly one day in eight. Only 0.6 day reaches a full inch, meaning a genuine soaking shows up in something like three Februaries out of five. Spread 2.57 inches across 28 days and the practical picture is a gray hour or two rather than a lost day, with the rest of the week dry enough to dry a towel on the dashboard.
A 47.5°F dawn and a 73.7°F afternoon ask for two wardrobes on the same day, and a spring trip puts wet clothes between them. Pack a fleece for the eight o’clock lot, a swimsuit for midday, and a full dry change for the ride home: low February sun will not finish drying a towel by five. Water shoes are worth the space on a limestone bank, and a knit hat costs nothing to carry on the drive up.
On February 15 the sun rises at 7:07 a.m. and sets at 6:21 p.m. local time, giving 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight. The warm air and the good light overlap between roughly 11 and 4, which is the block worth defending. A paddle launched at nine finishes inside it. Anything started after four finishes in falling light and dropping temperatures, so put dinner somewhere else rather than stacking a second activity onto the end of the day.
How warm is Weeki Wachee Springs in February?
Take those two numbers apart before you trust them. The 73.7°F high is an average of daily maxima across thirty Februaries, so roughly half of February afternoons land above it and half below. The 47.5°F low is the same arithmetic applied to the coldest hour of each night. Neither is a temperature you feel for long. What you actually feel is the 26.2°F climb between them, and on most days it is finished by two in the afternoon.
In clothes, that reads as three changes. Fleece and long pants hold until about ten, when the sun has been up for three hours. Short sleeves carry the middle of the day, which is the only window a February swim really wants. By half past five the fleece goes back on, forty-five minutes ahead of the 6:21 sunset. Sunglasses matter more than people expect at this latitude in winter, because the light comes in low and bounces off clear water all day.
An average February drops to 32°F or below on 2.8 nights at the Brooksville gauge, so frost on a windshield is a normal event here rather than a freak one. The water is the question we cannot put a number on: we found no verified temperature reading for the spring itself, so we give no figure. What the state does make plain is that the flow has no season. Spring country as a whole is covered in our manatee guide.
How busy is Weeki Wachee Springs in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Cards on the table about money. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the Weeki Wachee area, so we call no month the cheap one and no month the expensive one. The capacity figure we can quote comes from the state: Florida DEP’s 2024 Recreational Facilities Inventory counts 255 parking spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and the state ties that count to the gate, which closes when the lot fills. Budgets for the wider trip sit in our Florida cost guide.
How far ahead to book depends on something we could not read. Floridastateparks.org answers our automated reads with a 403, so we quote no entrance fee, no opening hour and no reservation rule. Treat the lot as the reservation instead. With 255 spaces, the morning is decided by arrival time, and the fix costs nothing beyond an alarm: sleep within a short drive, be in line before the gate opens, and confirm that hour with the park the week you travel.
We could not verify the local lodging-tax rate either, so we give no percentage and no nightly add-on. Ask the property to quote the all-in total, taxes included, before you take the rate. That is the figure your card will see, and it is the only one worth comparing between two towns.
The other line that moves this month is the car. Distances between Florida’s springs are driving distances, and a rental is what turns one swim into a day that can also take in Crystal River’s manatee winter. Fuel and tolls are the predictable part of the budget, and our getting-around guide explains why the transponder option usually pays for itself on a Gulf-side vacation.
Things to do in Weeki Wachee Springs in February

February hands you the version of this park that the parking count does not govern. The state ties those 255 spaces and the closing gate to summer Saturdays, when heat and school holidays arrive together. Put a 73.7°F average afternoon in their place and the day reorganizes itself: paddling becomes the main event rather than the warm-up, the swim becomes a short bracing one, and a ten o’clock arrival is a reasonable plan instead of a gamble.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is the address, and the state’s 2024 inventory counts what it holds: one designated swimming area, one launch shared by canoes, kayaks and tubes, 255 parking spaces. That is the whole infrastructure, which keeps the choices simple. The entrance fee and the daily opening hour are the two things we could not confirm at the source, so no price and no clock appear above. Call the park during the week you plan to go.
The water is the constant and the air is the variable, and the gap between them is what makes a season here. Between January and March the average afternoon at the Brooksville gauge climbs from 70.7°F to 77.6°F while the run goes on unchanged, so the same swim reads differently in each month for reasons that have nothing to do with the spring. February sits in the middle at 73.7°F. That is roughly the point where the walk back to the car stops being punishing.
What is free in February we cannot tell you: the park’s fee schedule sits behind the page our reader could not open, so we list no free day and no discount. The manatee counts fall in the same category, since the FWC wildlife page renders in a browser and not to an automated read. The one thing February hands out at no charge is room in the lot.
Weeki Wachee Springs in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs off the 7:07 sunrise. Eat in the dark, be at the gate for opening, and take the launch first, because canoes, kayaks and tubes all share the same one and early boats avoid the shuffle. Keep the swim for the block between 11 and 3, closest to that 73.7°F average, when coming out of the water is bearable. By 4:30 the light goes flat and the temperature starts its slide toward 47.5°F. Sunset is 6:21.
Day two is the flexible one: a second morning on the water if you loved it, or the drive north to Crystal River for the manatee season. If the sky turns, the odds favor patience, since an average February logs a tenth of an inch on 3.5 days and a full inch on only 0.6 day. Wait out the hour with the dry clothes you packed, then pick an indoor afternoon from our Florida things-to-do guide.
Best time to visit Weeki Wachee Springs: February vs January and March
| January | February | March | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 70.7°F | 73.7°F | 77.6°F |
| Average low | 44.3°F | 47.5°F | 50.8°F |
| Precipitation | 3.01 in | 2.57 in | 2.66 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.2 | 3.5 | 3.7 |
| Spring water temperature | not verified | not verified | not verified |
January runs 70.7°F over 44.3°F with 3.01 inches across 4.2 wet days. February runs 73.7°F over 47.5°F with 2.57 inches across 3.5 wet days. March runs 77.6°F over 50.8°F with 2.66 inches across 3.7 wet days. February is the driest of the three on both measures, and its afternoon sits about four degrees under March and three over January. No verified water reading exists for the spring in any of the three, so the comparison is air only.
Move four weeks forward and you buy 3.9°F of afternoon and 3.3°F of night, at a cost of two-tenths of a wet day and a tenth of an inch of rain. Move four weeks back and you hand back three degrees and take on 0.7 more wet day, plus a colder walk to the car. Neither shift changes the water, and neither changes the 255 spaces. What it changes is how long you stay out of the spring between swims.
Is February a good time to visit Weeki Wachee Springs?
Yes, if the point of the trip is the paddle, the walk and a short sharp swim in water the calendar cannot touch. Say no if your picture of Florida is a towel and six unbroken hours of sun: a 73.7°F ceiling and a 47.5°F dawn do not support that plan, and 2.8 freezing nights a month say so plainly. Families with small children who insist on staying in the water should look at the warmer end of spring.
If the answer is no, March is the month to shift to: 77.6°F afternoons, 50.8°F nights, 2.66 inches of rain, and the whole cost of that upgrade is two-tenths of a wet day. January goes the other way, 70.7°F by day and 3.01 inches over 4.2 wet days, which suits anyone who would rather have a cold morning than company. The statewide version of this decision lives in our Florida calendar.
What February holds that neither neighbor does: the driest average of the three at 2.57 inches over 3.5 wet days, with afternoons that still reach 73.7°F.
The last word
Book two nights rather than one, set the alarm for the 7:07 sunrise, and accept that the cold part of a February spring day is the twenty feet between the water and the towel. One note on the label you will see on signs in this part of Florida: the statute reserves Outstanding Florida Spring for the historic first-magnitude springs as the Florida Geological Survey determines them, plus six more named by hand in the law, and we did not verify which of those two lists carries Weeki Wachee. The park inventory is clearer, and it is what you plan around: one swim area, one launch, 255 spaces.
