Silver Glen Springs in February: Weather, Crowds, Prices and a Two-Day Plan

February hands this spring a clean trade. The air warms to an average high of 70.9°F and drops to 45.9°F overnight, 2.67 inches of rain fall across the month, and the water leaving the vent pays attention to none of it. The spring itself has no season. So February changes the walk to the water, the towel situation and the drive home, and leaves the swim alone.

That makes it a date question with a date answer. February is the driest of the three months around it, it carries about one fewer wet day than either neighbor, and it puts roughly 2.8 nights at or below freezing on the calendar.

February gives the driest air of the winter and the coolest mornings anyone swims in here: come for the warm middle of the day, and treat the exit from the water as the part that needs planning.

Go for: the driest month of the local winter, afternoons above 70°F, about one wet day fewer than January or March, and water whose temperature the calendar never touches.

Think twice before: planning a sunrise swim. Around 2.8 February nights fall to 32°F or below, and the sun does not clear the horizon until 7:04 a.m.

Every figure here describes the air, and it comes from one thermometer: NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals for station USW00012816, Gainesville Regional Airport, about 78 km from the spring, roughly 48 miles. That is a station record rather than a grid-cell reanalysis, so it carries a real gauge’s history and a real gauge’s distance from where you will park. February there runs 70.9°F for the average high, 45.9°F for the average low and 2.67 inches of precipitation. The water in the run has no season at all. That is the whole reason anyone drives out in winter.

Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 4.1 February days, about one day in seven. A real soaking of an inch or more turns up 0.7 times in an average February, so call it seven Februarys in ten with one genuinely wet day. A gray February morning here tends to be a band of rain rather than an all-day washout, though the trees keep dripping long after it passes, and a spring run under low cloud is a colder proposition than the same water at two in the afternoon.

Pack for two climates in one trunk. Damp ground at first light makes a fleece and dry shoes non-negotiable, and four hours later they are redundant. Two towels beat one, because the first will not dry in winter air. A windproof layer for the walk back from the water matters more than a sun hat. Anyone planning to get in twice should bring a second set of everything, from suit to socks.

On February 15 the sun rises at 7:04 a.m. and sets at 6:16 p.m. Eastern time, 11 hours 13 minutes of daylight, converted from the 12:04 and 23:16 UTC times we read. Under tree cover the usable light is shorter still. Give the water the middle of the day and the road the tail of it, and leave the run with an hour of light in hand so the fleece goes on before the temperature starts its overnight fall.

How warm is Silver Glen Springs in February?

The month’s two anchors sit 25.0°F apart: an average high of 70.9°F and an average low of 45.9°F. That swing is wider than January’s 24.5 and narrower than March’s 26.1, and it decides a February visit far more than any monthly average does. One caution on the water itself: we could not verify a temperature reading for the vent, so we publish no figure, and nobody should read the air normals above as the temperature of the pool.

Morning at the spring is a jacket-and-coffee affair rather than a swimsuit one. Between roughly 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. the air is in the top third of its day and getting in is comfortable. Before and after that block, the exit is the hard part, not the entry. Flip-flops on wet steps in cold air are a small misery, so bring shoes you can actually walk out in. Sunscreen still applies: a 70.9°F afternoon in central Florida burns pale skin as efficiently as an 85°F one.

Frost belongs in a February plan. An average month puts 2.8 nights at 32°F or below at the Gainesville station. Campers feel that far more than day visitors do, and a car parked overnight will have ice on the glass at exactly the hour you meant to be driving. It also explains the mist, which is a warm run smoking under freezing air at first light, wonderful to photograph and a poor moment to swim.

How busy is Silver Glen Springs in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

February falls inside Florida’s dry season, November through April, the window the state guide builds its winter case on (the 12-month verdict), and it lands ahead of the March spring-break wave that reshapes demand statewide. That is a calendar fact, not a price ranking. We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for this corner of central Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive.

At a spring the limit is usually parking rather than price, and a lot that fills by mid-morning on a warm Saturday closes the same way whatever rooms cost that week. We could not verify a lot size, an opening hour or a reservation system for Silver Glen Springs, so the safe move is a call to the managing office the week before you drive, and an arrival early enough that a full lot is somebody else’s problem. A weekday visit sidesteps the question.

On lodging, we could not verify a county tourist-development tax rate, so we give no percentage. The gap between an advertised nightly rate and the total at checkout is real in Florida, and our trip-cost guide is where we handle that layer rather than guessing at one here.

The one line worth paying up on in February is the car. Nothing public runs to a spring in the interior, and the state works on rentals outside Miami Beach and the Orlando resort bubbles, as getting around Florida sets out. A car you can heat, with a trunk that swallows wet towels and a change of clothes, turns a 45.9°F morning from an ordeal into a detail. Beyond that, the month asks for nothing you would not already pack for a winter weekend.

Things to do in Silver Glen Springs in February

February is the month when the air and the water part company. An afternoon around 70.9°F is swimmable without being escapable: you get in because you want to, not because the heat has made the decision for you, and no part of the month’s numbers forces a dawn start beyond the light itself. July offers the opposite deal, with a full day of usable air and a pool that everyone within two hours has also thought about.

The spring is the whole destination, and the figure we can stand behind for it is flow: the USGS gauge at station 02236160 measured 87 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, an instantaneous reading rather than a monthly mean. That volume is why the water is clear, since it is replaced faster than it can cloud. Florida law also keeps a protected class called Outstanding Florida Springs, built from the historic first-magnitude springs as the Florida Geological Survey determines them. We could not verify which springs sit on the current list, so we make no claim for this one.

What the month changes is everything except that water. The run looks in February exactly as it would in August. The sand around it does not, and neither does the half-hour after you climb out. Keep the swim in the warm shoulder of the day, from late morning to mid-afternoon, and treat the exit as the part that needs equipment. In summer you dry by standing still. In February you dry by moving, or by sitting in a car with the heater on.

On money we have less than we would like. Official Florida State Parks pages answer our automated reads with a 403 error, and the state wildlife agency’s manatee pages render in the browser rather than in the file we can fetch, so we could not confirm an entrance fee, an opening hour, a closing day or a manatee count for this spring. We name no price and we promise no animals. If wintering manatees are the reason you are coming to Florida at all, our manatee guide covers the places where the numbers are published.

Silver Glen Springs in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the middle of the clock. Leave your base around 8:30, by which time the windshield has cleared, and arrive between 10 and 10:30. Walk first while the air climbs, then keep the swim for the block between 11:30 and 3, when the day sits closest to its 70.9°F high. Out of the water by 3:15, dry clothes by 3:30, and you still hold nearly three hours of light for the drive, since sunset on February 15 comes at 6:16 p.m.

Day two depends on the sky. With 4.1 wet days in an average February, a gray morning is a fair bet. If it holds dry, run the same shape a shade earlier, because a second swim wants the warmest hours and a towel that dried overnight. If the rain arrives, hand the day to the road: our things to do in Florida guide collects the indoor and roadside options, and it is the inch-or-more day, not the 0.10-inch drizzle, that is worth rescheduling around.

Silver Glen Springs in February vs January and March

Measure January February March
Average high 67.1°F 70.9°F 75.8°F
Average low 42.6°F 45.9°F 49.7°F
Precipitation 3.29 in 2.67 in 3.49 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.2 4.1 5.3
Spring water No seasonal change No seasonal change No seasonal change

Set the three side by side and February is the dry one. Its 2.67 inches undercut January’s 3.29 and March’s 3.49, and its 4.1 days of measurable rain come in about one wet day below January’s 5.2 and March’s 5.3. Temperature runs the other way: the 70.9°F high is 3.8 degrees above January and 4.9 below March, with the overnight lows on the same slope at 42.6, 45.9 and 49.7. All three columns are NOAA normals from the same 1991-2020 period at the same station.

Shift four weeks forward and you buy 4.9 degrees on the afternoon and 3.8 on the morning, which is the difference between a chilly exit from the water and a pleasant one. You pay 0.82 inch and 1.2 wet days for it, plus the company: March is when Florida’s beach towns and parks turn into their loudest, priciest selves. Shift four weeks back to January and you keep the winter quiet but lose nearly four degrees off the afternoon and take 0.62 inch more rain.

Is February a good time to visit Silver Glen Springs?

Yes for anyone who wants a Florida spring without a summer parking problem, and for photographers who want mist on the water at first light. No for anyone whose idea of a spring day is lying on warm sand from breakfast onward: with average lows of 45.9°F and 2.8 freezing nights, the mornings belong to a fleece. Families with small children who chill fast should read the month as a three-hour window rather than a full day out.

If that reads like a no, book March instead: 75.8°F afternoons and 49.7°F nights make the whole day usable, at the price of 0.82 inch more rain and the spring-break crowd statewide. April onward falls outside the normals we hold for this spot, and our month-by-month verdict for Florida takes the calendar from there.

What no other month puts together is the gap itself: the driest air of the local winter, an afternoon already over 70°F, and water whose temperature the season never touches.

The last word

Book the afternoon, not the day. A February visit here amounts to a four-hour appointment from late morning to mid-afternoon, a fleece at both ends, and a drive home finished before 6:16 p.m. One more thing worth carrying with you: the Outstanding Florida Springs statute protects not only the first-magnitude springs the Florida Geological Survey determines, but six more written into the law by name, so the rules on a given run can be stricter than a swimmer expects. Ask the managing office before you launch anything that floats.
