Silver Springs in March: Weather, Crowds, Parking and a Two-Day Plan

The spring pushes out the same water in March as it does in July. What moves is the air above it. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals put a March afternoon at 77.3°F and the night before it at 56.0°F, a gap of 21.3 degrees you feel in the parking lot at 7:30 a.m. and forget by lunch.

March also takes something. It brings 3.22 inches of rain, more than a full inch above February and April, Florida’s school spring breaks land inside it, and Silver Springs State Park has exactly 1,686 parking spaces. Those three numbers do the deciding. For the year in full, our Florida calendar ranks all twelve months.

Go for: boardwalk mornings that start near 56.0°F, 6.3 miles of paddling trail under a 77.3°F afternoon, and light on the water until 7:38 p.m.

Think twice before: packing only swimsuits. Florida DEP’s 2024 facilities inventory lists no designated swimming area at Silver Springs State Park.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer, and it is not at the spring. NOAA NCEI’s 1991 to 2020 monthly normals for station USW00012819, Leesburg Muni AP, give March an average high of 77.3°F, an average low of 56.0°F and 3.22 inches of precipitation. That station sits about 27 miles (44 km) from the vent, and it is a real airfield gauge rather than a modeled grid cell. It describes the air over central Florida. The water below shows almost no seasonal swing at all.

Measurable rain reaches 0.10 inch on 3.8 days in an average March, roughly one day in eight. Half a day per March, statistically, brings an inch or more, so a genuine soaking arrives about one year in two. A monthly total of 3.22 inches falling on fewer than four wet days tells you the shape of it: short heavy bursts, not a gray drizzle that sits on the whole weekend.

Between the 56.0°F dawn and the 77.3°F mid-afternoon sit 21.3 degrees, and a boardwalk at 7:30 a.m. delivers every one of them. Bring a fleece you will be carrying by eleven, a long-sleeve layer for shaded water, and sunscreen that you will need at 77 degrees just as much as at 90. The rest of the kit is in our Florida know-before-you-go guide.

March 15 runs 12 hours and 02 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 7:35 a.m. and sunset at 7:38 p.m. local time, clocks already moved forward. The evening end of that matters more than the total: a walk started at five o’clock still has two and a half hours of light, which is not true of the same walk in January.

How warm is Silver Springs in March?

77.3°F by day, 56.0°F by night, 21.3 degrees between the two: that is March in the air, and the spread is wider than the month-to-month steps around it. We could not verify a water temperature for the vent itself, so no figure for the spring comes from us. Where such numbers do get published for Florida water, they are usually averages of daily maxima, a little warmer than a true 24-hour mean, and worth reading that way.

In practice you dress twice. At 7:35 a.m. that means long pants and a fleece over a t-shirt at the trailhead, with the hood up if there is wind over open water. By one in the afternoon the fleece is in the daypack, the hat is on, and a 77-degree paddle in full sun feels warmer than the number suggests.

Our normals carry no count of nights at or below freezing in March, so we give no frost figure. What they do carry is that 56.0°F monthly average, built from nights well above it and nights well below, and an early-March dawn can sit several degrees under the average without being unusual.

How busy is Silver Springs in March? Crowds, parking and prices

March falls inside Florida’s dry half of the year, the November to April stretch our state calendar sets out, and it is the month school spring breaks land in. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Marion County, so we crown no month expensive and quote no peak percentage.

The number that rations a March Saturday is 1,686. That is the parking count Florida DEP recorded for Silver Springs State Park in its 2024 facilities inventory, and when the lot fills, the gate closes. The state flags that scenario for summer Saturdays. A spring-break weekend with 77-degree afternoons deserves the same early start. We have no lead-time data for lodging nearby, so we name no number of weeks in advance; beds across the state are covered in our where to stay in Florida guide.

We could not verify Marion County’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage comes from us. What we can point you to is the statewide cost picture, from rental-car add-ons to electronic tolls, in what a Florida trip costs.

One upgrade changes March more than any other: sleeping inside the gate. The 2024 inventory counts 10 cabins in the park, and a guest already past the entrance never tests those 1,686 spaces at ten in the morning. Cabin rates were not something we could verify, so we quote none. Families weighing the same call across the state can use Florida with kids.

Things to do in Silver Springs in March

March buys long hours outdoors at 77.3°F without the July heat index, and it hands back light until 7:38 p.m. The gate-closing scenario the state describes belongs to summer Saturdays. In March the same 1,686 spaces serve a cooler day, and the walking that feels punishing in August is simply pleasant.

Silver Springs State Park, counted by Florida DEP in 2024: 4,775 feet of boardwalk, a shade under a mile, plus 5 observation platforms, 6.3 miles of paddling trail and 10 cabins. The USGS gauge at station 02239500 measured 264 cubic feet per second leaving the vent when we read it on September 11, 2026, and that volume is the reason for the clarity. Water that gets replaced that fast never has time to cloud.

Flow and water temperature at the vent barely register a season, so the whole of March happens in the air over the boardwalk: 73.3°F in February, 77.3°F in March, 82.7°F in April. The 4-degree step up from February turns a brisk walk into a comfortable one, and the 5.4 degrees still to come in April turn the same walk into a warm one.

We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a March manatee count. Florida’s state-parks site returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026, and the state wildlife agency’s manatee page renders only in a browser, so we name nothing free and quote no gate price. Two readings of the 2024 inventory also disagree on paddle launches, one listing three canoe, kayak and tube launches and one listing none, and neither lists a designated swimming area. Manatee season itself sits in our manatee guide.

Silver Springs in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one opens at the 7:35 a.m. sunrise with the air near 56.0°F. Walk the 4,775 feet of boardwalk and the 5 observation platforms first, while the light is low and the lot is still half empty. Move to the water mid-morning, with 6.3 miles of paddling trail ahead of you and the 77.3°F peak arriving in the early afternoon. Save the last hour before the 7:38 p.m. sunset for the platforms again, when the light comes back low from the other side.

Day two takes the water slowly and leaves the afternoon for the drive out. If the sky turns, the odds sit with you: 3.8 wet days in an average March, and only half a day at an inch or more. A 0.10-inch morning in central Florida is usually done inside an hour, so push the paddling to the afternoon instead of canceling it, and keep a cabin porch or the car as the waiting room.

Silver Springs in March vs February and April

Measure February March April
Average high 73.3°F 77.3°F 82.7°F
Average low 52.0°F 56.0°F 61.7°F
Precipitation 2.08 in 3.22 in 2.04 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 4.0 3.8 3.9
Water temperature at the vent Not verified Not verified Not verified

February runs 73.3°F by day and 52.0°F at night, March 77.3 and 56.0, April 82.7 and 61.7: two clean steps of four to five degrees across eight weeks. Rain breaks the pattern. March takes 3.22 inches against February’s 2.08 and April’s 2.04, more than a full inch of extra water, and it does so on the fewest wet days of the three, 3.8 against 4.0 and 3.9. Heavier rain, fewer days of it.

Move four weeks forward to April and you gain 5.4 degrees of afternoon, 5.7 degrees of night and 1.18 fewer inches of rain, and you hand back the cool dawn that makes a 7:35 a.m. boardwalk worth setting an alarm for. Move four weeks back and February saves you nothing on wet days, 4.0 against 3.8, while costing 4.0 degrees of afternoon. Our February page argues its own case for those 52-degree nights.

Is March a good time to visit Silver Springs?

Yes for walkers and paddlers. A 77.3°F afternoon over 6.3 miles of trail, a 56.0°F dawn on the boardwalk and light until 7:38 p.m. make a two-day visit easy to fill. No for anyone whose whole plan is swimming: the state’s 2024 inventory lists no designated swimming area here. No, too, for travelers who need dry weeks, since March takes 3.22 inches, the most of the three months around it.

If the answer came out no, April is the month to move to. It runs 82.7°F by day and 2.04 inches of rain, warmer and drier, with 61.7°F nights that make an early start less of a shock. The trade is heat arriving sooner in the day, and school-holiday pressure on those 1,686 spaces that we cannot measure for you.

Of the three months in this window, only March pairs a 77.3°F afternoon with a night still down at 56.0°F and a full 12 hours of daylight.

The last word

Settle one thing before you drive: sleep inside the gate in one of the park’s 10 cabins, or be at the entrance for the 7:35 a.m. sunrise. Either answer defuses the 1,686-space question that decides a busy Saturday. And carry this with you onto the boardwalk: Florida law puts this water in a class of its own, statute 373.802(5) defining Outstanding Florida Springs as every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey identifies, plus six more written into the text by hand. The 264 cubic feet per second we read at the gauge is what that status is built on.
