The Luminous Lagoon in November: Weather, Rain Days, Sea Temperature and How December Compares

The glow only shows after dark, and in November the dark comes early. On the 15th the sun rises at 6:16 a.m. and sets at 5:34 p.m., 11 hours 18 minutes apart, so an evening on the water can start at six and still finish before a late dinner. The afternoon ahead of it averages 83.6°F, warm enough that waiting at the dock asks for nothing beyond what you swam in.

Rain is the number that decides the month. November averages 3.54 inches across 9.4 days wet enough to register 0.10 inch, against October’s 6.57 inches across 17.3 days. The sea off the lagoon still runs 85.3°F. December turns drier again and takes 2.1 degrees out of the water, so the three months amount to a straight trade between rain and warmth, and the figures for all three sit in the comparison table below.

Think twice before: locking one fixed evening for the boat. Rain still falls on roughly one day in three, and we could not verify departure times for any operator.

One caveat before the numbers. Every figure here for air and rain is a model reanalysis rather than a thermometer reading: ERA5, computed for the grid cell at 18.49° N, 77.66° W. That cell sits over Falmouth, where the lagoon is, about 19 miles (30 km) east of Montego Bay. Take the figures as the lagoon’s own corner of the north coast, not as a reading for the whole island.

The 1991-2020 normals put November at an average high of 83.6°F and an average low of 75.2°F, with 3.54 inches of rain over the month. They come from ERA5, the ECMWF reanalysis served through Open-Meteo, computed for the Falmouth cell rather than read off an airport station. Station normals and reanalysis diverge, sometimes by two or three degrees on the overnight minimum, so treat 75.2°F as a close approximation rather than a gauge.

Nine point four days in an average November collect at least 0.10 inch, a little under one day in three. Spread the month’s 3.54 inches across those days and each wet day averages about 0.38 inch: a shower, not a washout. In practice that reads as a heavy fifteen or twenty minutes and a road drying behind it, rather than the gray full-day rain a northern November trains you to expect.

Only 8.4 degrees separate the average high from the average low, so daytime never calls for a layer. The boat does. You are on open water after sunset, wet from a swim, moving at speed, and 75.2°F air reads colder in that combination than it does on a balcony. A light windbreaker and a dry shirt in a dry bag cover it, plus sandals you do not mind soaking. Our packing list handles the rest of the suitcase.

Daylight on November 15 runs 11 hours 18 minutes, from a 6:16 a.m. sunrise to a 5:34 p.m. sunset (11:16 and 22:34 UTC, converted to Jamaica time). The useful consequence is an early curtain: darkness good enough for the glow arrives at dinner hour, not at 9 p.m., which puts the lagoon and a table in the same evening without a fight.

Can you swim at the Luminous Lagoon in November? Sea temperature and how the water feels

Sea surface off the lagoon averages 85.3°F in November in the Open-Meteo Marine API, measured as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. That detail changes how you read it: a mean of daily peaks sits a shade above a 24-hour average, so the figure describes the warm end of the afternoon. An early morning swim comes in slightly under 85.3°F, and no table we found gives that cooler dawn number for this stretch of coast.

At that temperature the water asks nothing of you. No wetsuit, no bracing entry, no ten-minute ceiling for children, no strategy about when to get in. Compare it with the air: 85.3°F water against an 83.6°F average high means the swim is the warmer half of the evening, and stepping out is the part that feels cool.

We could not verify a wind or swell series for this stretch in November, so we publish no figures for either, and the sheltered water of a lagoon behaves differently from the open coast in any case. Storm risk is the separate question people mean when they ask about November, and our hurricane season page carries it month by month. Conditions since the last big system are tracked in our post-Melissa update.

How busy is the Luminous Lagoon in November? Crowds, prices and when to book

We hold no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for this corner of the north coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can place on the calendar is plain enough: November sits after the American summer break and before the Christmas and New Year weeks, with Thanksgiving as the one busy island inside it. Everything on either side of that week is the quiet part of the month.

Booking behavior is the piece we cannot chart, so take this as editorial judgment and not data. Reserve the evening outing at the same time as the room if your trip falls in Thanksgiving week, and leave the other three weeks to a call the day before, since a night on the water is weather-dependent anyway. The ride from the airport is the fixed cost either way, and our Montego Bay transfers page prices the options.

We could not verify Jamaica’s current lodging tax rate, so we give no percentage. Taxes and quoted room rates also move between the day you book and the day you arrive, and our trip cost page holds only what we have checked.

One line in the budget genuinely changes November, and it is distance rather than luxury: a bed near Falmouth instead of one 19 miles west in Montego Bay. The outing ends in full darkness, the return drive happens at night, and November’s early sunset means that drive starts at seven rather than at ten. Our driving guide covers the road conditions, and Montego Bay covers the base itself.

Things to do at the Luminous Lagoon in November: Falmouth and Montego Bay

What November hands you that October does not is dry evenings. Wet days fall from 17.3 to 9.4 while the afternoon air gives up 2.3 degrees and the water gives up 2.2. A glow trip is an outdoor evening on open water, and rain is the single thing that cancels it, so halving the rain while keeping almost all of the warmth is the whole argument for this month.

The lagoon lies at Falmouth, on the same coordinates the normals come from, 18.49° N and 77.66° W. Montego Bay, about 19 miles west, is where nearly every visitor lands and sleeps. We could not verify current boat fares or departure times for any operator on the lagoon, so we quote neither here. Our lagoon guide holds what we have checked, and things to do in Jamaica covers the daylight hours around it.

Seasons barely touch the water and clearly touch the air. At 85.3°F against October’s 87.5°F, the lagoon’s swim feels the same in either month. The day length is what shifts: 11 hours 18 minutes on November 15 means a morning at Dunn’s River Falls or a run up into the Blue Mountains has to be finished by half past five, and the lagoon takes over from there.

We found no free-entry scheme or fee waiver dated to November, so we advertise none. Free in November is exactly what is free the rest of the year: the 5:34 p.m. sunset, the walk into 85.3°F water, and the hour of dark afterward when the sky over the north coast is the only ticket nobody sells.

The Luminous Lagoon in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs inside the 6:16 a.m. to 5:34 p.m. window. Be outdoors before eleven while 83.6°F is still gentle, eat lunch under a roof through the hottest stretch, and swim around four, when the sea is closest to the 85.3°F daily peak the marine series measures. Shower, eat something light by six, and keep the rest of the evening open for the boat, since darkness good enough for the glow has already arrived.

Day two is the one to hold loosely. With 9.4 wet days in an average November, roughly one day in three brings measurable rain, usually about 0.38 inch in a single burst. Put the drive west to Montego Bay or an inland detour on this day, keep the evening as the spare slot in case night one washes out, and remember that a shower here rarely eats a whole day. Our getting around guide has the transport options.

The Luminous Lagoon in November vs October and December

Measure October November December
Average high 85.9°F 83.6°F 82.5°F
Average low 76.5°F 75.2°F 73.7°F
Precipitation 6.57 in 3.54 in 2.30 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 17.3 9.4 5.1
Sea surface (daily maxima) 87.5°F 85.3°F 83.2°F

Across the three months the air hardly moves: 85.9°F, then 83.6°F, then 82.5°F, a spread of 3.4 degrees end to end. Rain does the separating. October’s 6.57 inches fall across 17.3 days, November’s 3.54 inches across 9.4, December’s 2.30 inches across 5.1. The sea cools in step, 87.5°F to 85.3°F to 83.2°F, all three read as means of daily maxima from the same marine series rather than as 24-hour averages.

Shift four weeks later and you gain 4.3 fewer wet days, lose 2.1 degrees of sea warmth, and walk into the holiday calendar: see December at the lagoon. Shift four weeks earlier and October returns the warmest water of the three at 87.5°F while asking for 17.3 wet days, nearly double November’s count. For a trip whose centerpiece happens outdoors after dark, that trade favors the later date.

Is November a good time to visit the Luminous Lagoon?

Yes, if the lagoon is the reason you booked. The glow wants darkness and a boat that goes out, and November supplies dark at 5:34 p.m. with measurable rain on fewer than one day in three. No, if you are chasing the warmest possible sea or a fortnight you can plan rigidly: 85.3°F sits 2.2 degrees below October, and 9.4 wet days is not zero wet days.

When the answer lands on no, December is the shift to make rather than October. It drops wet days to 5.1 and rain to 2.30 inches while surrendering only 1.1 degrees of afternoon air, and the water holds 83.2°F. The trade-off is the holiday calendar rather than the weather, and we hold no rate data to tell you what those weeks cost.

November’s own offer, in one line: October’s warmth minus October’s rain, 83.6°F afternoons and 85.3°F water with 7.9 fewer wet days than the month before. Our best time to visit Jamaica page sets that against the other ten.

The last word

Book the lagoon evening for your first clear night instead of your last. The average November carries just 0.1 day with an inch or more of rain, so a genuinely canceled evening is rare, and a night held in reserve is the cheapest insurance the month sells. Then build the rest of the day backward from a 5:34 p.m. sunset and be in the water by four, when it reads closest to 85.3°F.
