JAMAICA · PORT ANTONIO · JANUARY
Port Antonio in January runs warm and green. The ERA5 reanalysis puts the average high at 79.5°F and the low at 72.2°F, and the sea off the harbor averages 82.4°F at its daily peak. Rain turns up on roughly one day in three, and only rarely hard, because this northeastern corner of Jamaica stays the island’s wettest even in winter.
January gives you a sea still warm enough for long swims and heritage streets on the Titchfield Peninsula that stay pleasant on foot in the morning. It also brings more rain than February: 3.75 inches against 2.63 on the same model grid. Travelers flying in purely for dry beach days should weigh that gap before booking. Everyone else gets a mild, lush month with the mountains in full view.

Port Antonio weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, served by Open-Meteo for 1991 to 2020 and calculated over one grid cell at 18.1789N, -76.4522, the square covering Port Antonio. No airport thermometer sits behind the normals below: a reanalysis blends observations into a weather model, and a station reading could differ. That cell also lies at the wet northeastern end of the island, the rainiest corner of Jamaica, so a 79.5°F high and 3.75 inches of rain describe this stretch of coast. Montego Bay and Negril run on different numbers.
In an average January, 9.9 days record at least 0.10 inch of precipitation, so expect measurable rain on about one day in three. Days with an inch or more average 0.3, roughly one heavy soaking every third January. Most of the monthly total therefore arrives in amounts well under an inch a day. Keep beach time open-ended and hold one flexible slot every few days for a visit you can move.
Nights stay mild: the average low of 72.2°F sits just 7.3°F under the 79.5°F high. That narrow spread means no jacket and no layering system. Pack one long-sleeved shirt for air-conditioned rooms or a breezy boat ride, a light rain shell for those wet days, and quick-dry clothing, since humid air slows drying. Our Jamaica packing list has the rest.
On January 15 Port Antonio gets about 11 hours 12 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:39 a.m. and sets at 5:50 p.m. local time, with Jamaica on UTC minus five hours all year and no daylight saving. Light fades before six, so a late beach session wraps up around 5:30 and dinner happens after dark. Put outdoor sightseeing between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Swimming in Port Antonio in January: sea temperature
The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Port Antonio at 82.4°F in January, averaged over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average, and early-morning water will feel slightly cooler. It comes from a different dataset and period than the air normals, so we credit the two separately.
For much of the day the water is warmer than the air: 82.4°F against a 79.5°F average high and a 72.2°F low. Most swimmers can go in without a wetsuit and stay as long as they like. Children and anyone who chills easily may want a rash guard for long snorkel sessions, and a dry towel matters most after sunset, when the air drops well below the sea.
Our sources carry no wind or swell series for Port Antonio in January, so we give no wave height and no calm-water forecast. Check a marine forecast on the day, ask your host which beaches are sheltered, and treat red flags or lifeguard warnings as final. Our Jamaica safety guide covers general precautions.
How busy is Port Antonio in January? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data for Port Antonio, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. The calendar still counts: January falls in the northern winter, when many Americans head south for warmth, and its first days follow the holiday break. For the island-wide seasons, see the best time to visit Jamaica.
Without lead-time data we cannot name a number of weeks. Lock in a refundable room once your flights are set, particularly for the first week of January, and look through where to stay in Jamaica for the style of base that suits you. Arrange the ride from the airport at the same time.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate or guest fee for Port Antonio properties, so we give no percentage. Ask whether a quoted rate includes taxes and service charges before paying, and read the final total at checkout. Our Jamaica trip cost guide covers the wider budget.
If one budget line changes January, it is transport. With rain on about one day in three, a rental car or a booked driver lets you move a beach day or a heritage visit at short notice. We have not verified rental or driver rates, and our guides to driving in Jamaica and getting around explain what to expect on the roads.
Things to do in Port Antonio in January

With the average high at 79.5°F, walking Port Antonio’s heritage streets stays comfortable well into the day, and an 82.4°F sea is waiting afterward. December runs slightly warmer on land at 80.4°F and wetter, February slightly drier. January sits between the two, with more swimming warmth than February and fewer wet days than December.
Start on the Titchfield Peninsula, the first place in the area settled by the English and known as Port Antonio’s oldest settlement. Fort George stands on it, and DeMontevin Lodge mixes Victorian styles there. In town, the Port Antonio Court House went up in 1895 on the direction of the Colonial Secretary, and Christ Church, the Portland Parish Church, stands on land indentured on September 3, 1836. Folly Point Lighthouse dates from 1888, a masonry tower built fireproof. Inland, the Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015: 26,251.6 hectares (about 64,869 acres) rising from 850 to 2,256 meters (2,789 to 7,402 feet).
A stone lighthouse from 1888 looks the same in any month. January changes the walk to it: mild air, and the chance of one of those 9.9 wet days. Air also cools with altitude, so bring the long sleeves to Moore Town, the Maroon community whose heritage UNESCO inscribed on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008. A Colonel governs it today, an honorary title earned by his ancestors. Nanny Town takes its name from Nanny, who led the Maroons in the first Maroon war, and Charles Town, near Buff Bay, emerged around 1754. Our Blue Mountains guide covers the high country.
Our sources carry no opening hours and no admission fees for any Port Antonio site, and no boat or raft rate on the Rio Grande. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust describes monuments without publishing visiting times or prices, so we call nothing free. The peninsula’s streets are public, and DeMontevin Lodge and the Court House can be seen from the road. Ask your host or call ahead before planning a day around any interior.
Port Antonio in January: a two-day itinerary
On day one, get up for the 6:39 a.m. sunrise and walk the Titchfield Peninsula by 7:30, while the air is still close to its 72.2°F overnight low. Move on to the 1895 Court House and Christ Church mid-morning, eat lunch in town around noon as the air nears 79.5°F, then swim from about 2 p.m. in the 82.4°F sea. Head to Folly Point Lighthouse around 4:30 p.m. so you are back before the 5:50 p.m. sunset.
On day two, leave by 8 a.m. for the Blue and John Crow Mountains and the Maroon heritage of Moore Town, using the morning for the drive. If the day opens wet, swap the order: stay near town, visit Orange Bay Railway Station west of Port Antonio for its Jamaica Georgian features, and save the mountains for the next dry morning. With 0.3 days of an inch or more in an average January, a true downpour is rare, but ask a local guide or your host about mountain roads after heavy rain.
Best time to visit Port Antonio: January vs December and February
| Normal | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.4°F | 79.5°F | 79.7°F |
| Average low | 73.4°F | 72.2°F | 72.0°F |
| Precipitation | 4.58 in | 3.75 in | 2.63 in |

| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 83.2°F | 82.4°F | 81.4°F |
On the ERA5 grid, the three months sit within about a degree and a half of each other on air: highs of 80.4°F, 79.5°F and 79.7°F, lows of 73.4°F, 72.2°F and 72.0°F. Rainfall moves more. December brings 4.58 inches over 11.5 days, January 3.75 over 9.9, and February 2.63 over 7.7. At sea, the Marine API’s daily-maximum average slides from 83.2°F to 82.4°F to 81.4°F.
Moving four weeks later to February gets you 1.12 fewer inches of rain and 2.2 fewer wet days, for a sea 1.0°F cooler and a high 0.2°F warmer. Moving four weeks earlier to December adds 0.8°F to the sea and 0.9°F to the high, along with 0.83 inch more rain, 1.6 more wet days and holiday-season travel dates. Both months have their own guides: Port Antonio in December and Port Antonio in February.
Is January a good time to visit Port Antonio?
Yes, for travelers who want warm swimming, heritage walks and a green mountain backdrop, and who can live with rain on about one day in three. No, if the trip rests entirely on dry beach days or a single outdoor excursion you cannot reschedule: with 9.9 wet days in an average January, one of them may land on it.
Pick February in that case. It keeps nearly identical air, a 79.7°F high and a 72.0°F low, cuts rain to 2.63 inches over 7.7 days, and still offers an 81.4°F sea.
Of the three winter months we compared, January puts the widest gap between sea and air, with the water 2.9°F warmer than the average high.
The last word
Book January if the swim matters more to you than a spotless forecast, and keep one flexible day for the rain. Spend it at Seaman’s Valley, where our sources place the ruins of a great house and the first European cemetery in the area. Ask your host about visiting hours before you set off.
