JAMAICA · SOUTH COAST · JUNE · 17.88° N
June on the South Coast is the month the rain steps back. The 1991-2020 normals for this stretch give an average high of 88.2°F, an average low of 78.5°F and 2.04 inches of rain spread over 5.3 days that measure at all, against 10.6 such days in May. The sea off the bays runs 85.6°F, daylight on the 15th stretches to 13 hours 14 minutes, and all of it sits in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica.
What June takes away is the mildness of spring: afternoons at 88.2°F, nights that stop cooling at 78.5°F, and a middle of the day that becomes a question of shade. It also opens the months when storms enter the conversation, and we keep that to the hurricane-season guide rather than fold it into a weather average. For where to sleep and how this coast is strung together, the South Coast guide is the parent page.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH COAST · JUNE
June trades May’s wet mornings for straight heat: 88.2°F afternoons, half the rain days, and a sea at 85.6°F that asks nothing of you but sunscreen.
AVERAGE HIGH 88.2°F · 5.3 RAIN DAYS · SEA 85.6°F · 13H 14M OF DAYLIGHT ON JUNE 15
Go for: water time, boat mornings and long light, on the driest parish in the country and at half of May’s measurable rain days.
Think twice before: planning inland walking or a car without working air conditioning: 88.2°F here is the ordinary afternoon, not a heat wave.

Every figure here comes from ERA5, the ECMWF reanalysis served through Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 17.8767° N, 77.7588° W. That cell sits over Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica, and that dryness is what separates this coast from the north shore. It is a model estimate for a square of map, not a reading from an airport thermometer, so read it as the shape of the month rather than as a station record. June averages a high of 88.2°F, a low of 78.5°F and 2.04 inches of rain.
Those 2.04 inches fall across 5.3 days recording at least a tenth of an inch, roughly one day in six, plus 0.2 day recording an inch or more, which works out to one genuinely wet June in five. Divide the monthly total by the wet days and the average rainy day delivers under four tenths of an inch: a shower you wait out under a roof, not a day written off. May on this same coast records 10.6 measurable days, almost exactly twice as many.
The gap between day and night is 9.7°F, so the island gives very little back after dark: 78.5°F at the coolest point of the night. Nothing in a June suitcase needs a sweater. What matters is a room that moves air, a hat you will want from ten in the morning onward, and a second swimsuit, because the first will not dry as fast indoors as you expect. Our packing guide covers the rest, inland driving included.
On June 15 the sun rises at 5:34 a.m. and sets at 6:48 p.m. island time, for 13 hours 14 minutes of daylight. The early end is the usable end: the air has not reached 88.2°F and the sand is empty at six. Put the boat trip and the driving before noon, let the flat hours after lunch be lunch, and treat 6:48 p.m. as a hard stop for anything on the water. Night driving is a subject of its own, and our driving guide takes it.
Can you swim on the South Coast in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine model puts the sea surface off this coast at 85.6°F (29.8°C) in June, averaged over 2015 to 2024. Read the small print with it: that number is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so it runs a shade above a true 24-hour average. A swim at six in the morning will be a touch cooler than 85.6°F, and an afternoon one warmer than most monthly sea-temperature tables suggest.
At that temperature the water does not cool you down. No gasp going in, no shortened swim, no argument for a wetsuit or for a rash guard beyond sun cover. With the air at 88.2°F and the sea at 85.6, under three degrees separate standing on the sand from floating offshore, so the sea works as a place to be rather than as relief. Long snorkels, an hour of drifting, kids who refuse to come out: June allows all of it, and the sun sets the limit, not the water.
We have no wind or swell series for this coast, so we publish no figures for either, and the boat operators at Black River and on the run out to the stilt bar make that call morning by morning anyway. Storm risk runs on its own calendar and stays in the hurricane-season guide. If one boat trip is the reason for the whole vacation, book it for your first morning and keep the second one clear.
How busy is the South Coast in June? Crowds, room prices and booking order
We cannot put a number on the demand curve here. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Saint Elizabeth, so we crown no month cheapest and print no percentage. The calendar does say one thing: American school vacations start in June, which lifts family travel to warm-water destinations before anything about the weather changes. Where Jamaica’s busy months fall country-wide is argued out in our best-time guide.
Without a rate series, we will not invent a number of weeks to book ahead. The order is what we would defend: fix the dates on the weather and the light, then the flight, then the nights, then the road in, because this coast has no airport of its own and the transfer is the part first-timers under-plan. The flights guide covers the U.S. routes and the transfer page the drive. In our experience the specific room in the specific bay is the piece to lock first, since guesthouses hold few of them.
We could not verify Jamaica’s room tax or any tourism levy applying to properties on this coast, so we give no percentage and no per-night figure. Ask the property to quote a total with tax included before you send a deposit. What a week runs, country-wide, is broken down in our trip-cost guide.
The one line of the budget that changes June itself is the vehicle. Treasure Beach, Black River and the inland falls are strung along back roads, and without wheels those 13 hours 14 minutes of light shrink to whatever sits within walking distance of your porch. The getting-around guide lays out the alternatives, route taxis included, and a car with air conditioning that works is worth more in an 88.2°F month than any upgrade to the room.
Things to do on the South Coast in June

Against May, June halves the measurable rain days on this coast, 5.3 against 10.6, while the sea sits at 85.6°F and daylight reaches 13 hours 14 minutes on the 15th. That combination, drier ground and long evenings, is what lets a boat morning and an inland afternoon fit inside one day without finishing in the dark.
The places worth the driving are few and spread out. Treasure Beach, where our weather cell sits, is a run of small bays rather than a resort strip. Black River is the town at the mouth of the Great Morass, where the crocodile boats leave. YS Falls lies inland, the stilt bar stands on a sandbar offshore, Lovers’ Leap tops the cliffs above the coast, and the Appleton Estate is up the valley in the same parish. We could not verify current admission prices, boat fares or opening hours for any of them, so none appear here. Our things-to-do guide handles the country-wide list.
What June changes at those places is the air, not the water. A river-fed fall runs on rainfall and mountain water, and we have no temperature reading for the inland rivers. The air is what moves: 88.2°F against May’s 86.8°F, with 1.87 inches less rain across the month, which means fewer washed-out mornings on the Morass and firmer back roads. The heat also compresses the good hours, so the trips work before ten and after four and drag in between.
We could not verify any free-admission day, festival or June-specific program on this coast, so we name none. What costs nothing in June is the light and the sand: 13 hours 14 minutes of daylight on the 15th, a sea at 85.6°F, and a 6:48 p.m. sunset you can watch from the beach with a plate in your hand.
The South Coast in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one belongs to the morning. Up near the 5:34 a.m. sunrise if you can, coffee, and an hour in the water before the air climbs toward 88.2°F. Mid-morning, take the boat: Black River or the run out to the sandbar, if the operators are going out. Eat inland and slowly between one and three, which is when the heat wins every argument. Back in the sea around four, a table by six, the sun gone at 6:48 p.m.
Day two goes inland while yesterday’s sunburn settles: the falls in the morning, the estate after, the drive back timed to land before dark. If the sky turns, hold on to the arithmetic of a June rain day here, under four tenths of an inch on average across 5.3 days in the month. Swap the boat for the drive, keep the boat for the next morning, and check the forecast rather than the calendar, since only 0.2 day in an average June brings an inch or more.
The South Coast in June vs May and July
| Measure | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.8°F | 88.2°F | 89.5°F |
| Average low | 77.0°F | 78.5°F | 78.8°F |
| Rainfall | 3.91 in | 2.04 in | 1.85 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 10.6 | 5.3 | 5.7 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 85.3°F | 85.6°F | 85.8°F |
May, June and July are three versions of warm, and the temperature is the least of it. June’s 88.2°F high sits 1.4°F above May and 1.3°F below July. The rain is where the three separate: 3.91 inches over 10.6 measurable days in May, 2.04 over 5.3 in June, 1.85 over 5.7 in July. The sea barely shifts, 85.3°F to 85.6°F to 85.8°F, and those three come from the marine model’s daily maxima rather than from the air normals.
Move four weeks earlier and you gain 1.4°F off the day and 1.5°F off the night, paying for it with twice the wet days, 10.6 against 5.3, as our May page sets out. Move four weeks later and July hands you the lowest monthly total of the three, 1.85 inches, plus another 0.2°F of sea, in exchange for 89.5°F afternoons and nights that stall at 78.8°F.
Is June a good time to visit the South Coast?
For a trip built on water, boats and long evenings, yes: 5.3 rain days, an 85.6°F sea, 13 hours 14 minutes of daylight to spend. For hiking, for a car without working air conditioning, or for anyone who fades above 85, June is the wrong side of the trade, because 88.2°F afternoons here are the normal case rather than the exception. Families tied to the school calendar get a month that is dry by this coast’s standards, which is usually the trade they came for.
If the answer is no, take May over July. Its 86.8°F days and 77.0°F nights are the coolest of the three months, and the cost is rain on 10.6 days instead of 5.3. Anyone whose trip leans inland, toward the Blue Mountains rather than the sea, should read the country-wide calendar before fixing dates, because these numbers describe one grid cell over Treasure Beach and nowhere else.
June carries the solstice, and on the 15th that means 13 hours 14 minutes of daylight over a sea already at 85.6°F, in the driest parish in Jamaica.
The last word
Book June for the water and build every day around the first four hours of light. One number worth carrying to the reservation page: the day-to-night spread here is 9.7°F, narrower than May’s 9.8 and July’s 10.7, so the night returns almost nothing and whatever cooling you want in the room, a fan or a compressor will be doing it all night. Put the boat morning on day one, keep the second morning unbooked, and confirm the fares and hours with the operators before you drive out.
