JAMAICA · OCTOBER · 18.4° N
The sea off Ocho Rios averages 87.3°F in October, a shade warmer than the afternoon air at 86.2°F. Swimming is never the question this month. Rain is: an average October drops 6.19 inches across 16.2 days wet enough to measure, and the Atlantic hurricane season still has eight weeks left to run.
So the real decision is not whether to get in the water but whether to take October at all, or shift four weeks to November, when wet days fall to 11.4 and the sea still reads 85.1°F. Every figure here comes from the same grid cell and the same reference period as the two neighboring months, so the three can be compared line by line rather than guessed at.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · OCHO RIOS
October keeps the water at 87.3°F and the afternoons at 86.2°F, with rain measurable on 16.2 days and the Atlantic hurricane season running through November 30.
AVG HIGH 86.2°F · SEA 87.3°F · 16.2 WET DAYS · SEASON OPEN TO NOV 30
Go for: water at 87.3°F, within 0.3°F of September’s, and nights that hold at 76.2°F so an evening swim costs nothing in comfort.
Think twice before: booking a non-refundable October. The month sits inside NOAA’s most active stretch, mid-August to mid-October, and 6.19 inches is the wettest of these three months.

Ocho Rios weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | October (1991-2020) | How it lands |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.2°F | Warm every afternoon, with no heat spike in the record |
| Average low | 76.2°F | Nights stay swim-warm |
| Rainfall | 6.19 in | The wettest of the three fall months |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 16.2 | Measurable rain on roughly every other day |
| Sea surface | 87.3°F | Mean of daily maxima, 2015-2024 |
| Daylight, Oct 15 | 11 h 46 min | Sunrise 6:01 a.m., sunset 5:46 p.m. |
The normals here come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for the grid cell at 18.41° N, 77.10° W, averaged over 1991-2020. That is a model estimate for a square of coast and water, not a thermometer read at an airport, and the distinction is worth knowing: reanalysis and station records can part company by a couple of degrees, usually on the overnight low. Read with that caveat, October in Ocho Rios averages 86.2°F by day and 76.2°F by night, with 6.19 inches of rain over the month.
Rain falls on 16.2 days in an average October, counting every day with at least 0.10 inch. Call it every other day. Depth is the part that changes the plan, though: 6.19 inches spread over 16.2 wet days works out to under half an inch on a typical one.
Ten degrees separate the average high from the average low, 86.2°F against 76.2°F, a narrow spread by American standards. Nothing in that range calls for a sweater. Pack a second dry shirt, a rain shell light enough to carry all day, and shoes that tolerate being soaked twice before dinner. Our packing list has the rest of the kit.
On October 15 the sun rises at 6:01 a.m. and sets at 5:46 p.m. in Jamaica time, 11 hours 46 minutes of daylight, converted from the 11:01 and 22:46 UTC that sunrise-sunset.org gives. That is an early dark for a beach trip. A boat, a waterfall or a road with any distance in it needs to start before 4 p.m., and the last swim belongs at 5.
Can you swim in Ocho Rios in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Ocho Rios averages 87.3°F in October in Open-Meteo’s marine series, taken as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. That method matters when you compare tables. A mean of daily maxima runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water, so 87.3°F sits at the top of the range rather than in the middle of it.
Practically, the water is warmer than the average night air at 76.2°F, which is why an evening swim asks nothing of you on entry. No bracing gasp, no snorkel cut short, no child shivering on the steps. The one consequence worth planning for: water that warm does very little to cool you down after an hour in the sun, so shade and drinking water do more work here than the swim itself.
We found no monthly wind or swell series for this stretch of coast, so we give no figures for either. The calendar we do have is NOAA’s: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and sees most of its activity between mid-August and mid-October. October sits inside that stretch, so a rough-water day or a closed beach tends to arrive with a named system rather than out of a clear sky. Check the tropics in the week before you fly.
How busy is Ocho Rios in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ocho Rios, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. The calendar is firmer ground. October falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season as NOAA dates it, June 1 to November 30, and well outside the North American winter holidays, which is the part of the year the island’s demand is built around.
That shapes how you book more than how early. No booking-window data was verifiable for the island, so we give no number of weeks. What survives the missing figures is refundability: pay a little more for a room and a fare you can cancel, and read what your policy says about named storms, because coverage bought after a system has a name behaves differently from coverage bought before. Routes and carriers are in our flights guide.
We could not verify Jamaica’s current lodging-tax rate or the band that applies to Ocho Rios hotels, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Expect a tax line at checkout and ask the property for its own breakdown before you commit. The wider cost picture, meals through transfers, sits in what a Jamaica trip costs.
One upgrade genuinely changes an October trip, and it is not the ocean view. With measurable rain on 16.2 days and the season still open, the ability to move dates or shift a tour by 48 hours is worth more than any room feature you can buy. Spend there first.
Things to do in Ocho Rios in October

October is the last of the three fall months with the sea above 87°F: 87.6°F in September, 87.3°F in October, 85.1°F in November. Two degrees sounds like nothing until you have spent an hour face-down at snorkeling depth. What the month takes away is light, since it is gone by 5:46 p.m. on the 15th. Put the water in the morning and the driving after lunch.
Dunn’s River Falls is the climb everyone arrives for, a terraced limestone staircase you go up in the river itself. Fern Gully, the forest road climbing south out of town, is the drive people remember. West along the coast, the Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth only works after dark, and in October that means a 6 p.m. departure rather than an 8 p.m. one. We could not verify current admission prices at any of these, so we quote none. After Hurricane Melissa, check each operator’s own page for opening status before you drive out.
No monthly water-temperature readings exist in our sources for the river at the falls or for the lagoon, so we make no claim about either. The sea we do have: 87.6°F, 87.3°F and 85.1°F across September, October and November, a 2.5°F slide over eight weeks. The variable that actually moves an October visit is overhead. Wet days run 16.2 this month against 11.4 in November, so the odds of a downpour halfway up the climb are the thing to plan around.
We could not verify any October-only free admission in Ocho Rios, so we promise none. What costs nothing on any day of the month: the bay at 87.3°F, the seafront walk, and the hour before the light goes at 5:46 p.m. For a rained-out afternoon, the island-wide list has the indoor options.
Ocho Rios in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the early light. Sunrise at 6:01 a.m. makes a 7 o’clock breakfast a bright one, so take the falls climb in the first half of the morning while the air is still short of 86.2°F. Swim around noon, when the water stops feeling like a swim and starts feeling like a bath. Leave one loose hour in the afternoon for the shower that lands on roughly every other October day, and remember that a 6 p.m. dinner is a dinner after dark this month.
Day two follows the sky. Clear, and the Luminous Lagoon is an evening you can now start at 6 p.m. instead of 8, with the coast road out and back; our driving guide covers what that road asks of a rental. Wet, and it becomes a town day with lunch indoors and the swim slotted between showers, which is realistic given that 6.19 inches over 16.2 days averages 0.38 inch on a wet day. That soaks a shirt. It does not cancel a trip.
Ocho Rios in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 88.5°F | 86.2°F | 83.4°F |
| Average low | 77.2°F | 76.2°F | 74.7°F |
| Rainfall | 5.37 in | 6.19 in | 4.44 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 15.2 | 16.2 | 11.4 |
| Sea surface | 87.6°F | 87.3°F | 85.1°F |
October lands between its neighbors on temperature and above both on rain. Afternoons average 86.2°F against September’s 88.5°F and November’s 83.4°F, nights 76.2°F against 77.2°F and 74.7°F. Rainfall, though, peaks here at 6.19 inches, above September’s 5.37 and 1.75 inches above November’s 4.44, and wet days peak too at 16.2. The sea barely moves: 0.3°F down from September, 2.2°F above November.
Shift four weeks forward and you trade 2.2°F of sea warmth for 4.8 fewer wet days, plus a season that closes on November 30. Shift back to September and you gain 0.3°F of water and 2.3°F of afternoon heat, with the statistical peak of the season, September 10, sitting in the middle of the trip. For most travelers flying from the US, November is the better of the two trades.
Is October a good time to visit Ocho Rios?
Yes for swimmers, divers and anyone whose week is built around water. Water at 87.3°F under air at 86.2°F asks nothing of you on entry, and the rain arrives in half-inch bursts rather than as a gray season. No for a trip with locked dates and no cancellation cover, and no for anyone who would spend the week refreshing a storm tracker instead of looking at the bay.
If the answer is no, the move is November, four weeks and 4.8 wet days away: 11.4 days of measurable rain against 16.2, 4.44 inches against 6.19, and the hurricane season closing on the 30th. The cost of that move is real and small, 2.2°F of sea and 2.8°F of afternoon air.
What October alone gives you is water within 0.3°F of the warmest reading in our three-month series, without September 10 sitting in the middle of the booking.
The last word
Book October refundable and the hard decision is already made. Then look at the least-cited figure in the record: an inch or more of rain falls on 0.3 day in an average October, which works out to roughly one October in three with a true soaking day. Sixteen wet days reads like a washout on a chart, but the depth behind them is under half an inch at a time. Pack the shell, keep one afternoon hour loose, and swim twice a day at 87.3°F.
