NEGRIL · MARCH · 18.27° N
In March, Negril averages a high of 83.3°F and a low of 74.0°F, with 0.95 inches of rain spread over the whole month and measurable rain on just 1.9 days. The sea off the coast averages 82.6°F, the sun sets at 6:24 pm mid-month, and the Atlantic hurricane season does not open until June 1. For a beach week built on swimming and daylight, that is a strong set of dates.
What March does not give you is April’s warmer water, and it does not give us any way to tell you what a room costs. Our sources carry no occupancy series and no monthly rate series for Negril, so no month gets called cheap or expensive anywhere below. Everything else here is dated, sourced and compared against the two neighboring months.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · NEGRIL · MARCH
If you want dry days with water already warm, March delivers both: 0.95 inches of rain across the month and a sea averaging 82.6°F, with the storm season still three months off.
AVG HIGH 83.3°F · RAIN 0.95 IN · SEA 82.6°F · DAYLIGHT 12H05 · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: swimming without hesitation at 82.6°F, fewer than two measurable rain days in the average month, and a 6:24 pm sunset you can reach on foot.
Think twice before: banking on a bargain. We found no occupancy or room-rate series for Negril, so we rank no month by price.

One caveat before the numbers start. Every climate figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, produced by ECMWF over the 1991-2020 period for the grid cell at 18.2683° N, 78.3475° W. That is a modeled square of map, not a thermometer standing at an airport, and station normals can differ from it by a degree or two, most often on the overnight low.
Negril weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | March in Negril |
|---|---|
| Average high | 83.3°F |
| Average low | 74.0°F |
| Precipitation, whole month | 0.95 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.9 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.1 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 82.6°F |
| Daylight on March 15 | 12 h 05 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, March 15 | 6:19 am / 6:24 pm |
The 1991-2020 normals put the average March day at 83.3°F by afternoon and 74.0°F before dawn, with 0.95 inches of rain across all thirty-one days. Those come from the ERA5 reanalysis named above, computed for the grid cell that covers Negril rather than measured at a station. Treat them as the reliable shape of a typical March, not as a reading anyone wrote down.
Measurable rain falls on 1.9 days in the average March, roughly one day in sixteen, and a day dumping an inch or more turns up about one March in ten. On the ground that reads as an hour of gray in the afternoon rather than a canceled day. Less than an inch of rain over a full month is the driest stretch of the Jamaican year you will get with the water already warm.
Between the 83.3°F afternoon and the 74.0°F night sits a 9.3°F swing, wide enough that a breeze off the water at nine in the evening feels genuinely cool after a day in direct sun. One long-sleeve layer covers it, and nothing heavier belongs in the bag. Our Jamaica packing list handles the rest, reef-safe sunscreen and the plug type included.
March 15 brings 12 hours 05 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:19 am and sunset at 6:24 pm local. Usable beach light is finished within twenty minutes of that, so a 7:30 pm dinner costs you no view at all, while a boat trip leaving at four is cutting the return close. Plan the water for the morning and the middle of the day.
Can you swim in Negril in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Negril averages 82.6°F in March, taken from Open-Meteo’s marine series over 2015-2024. One detail matters for how you read it: that average is built from daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a true 24-hour mean would give. Water at six in the morning runs cooler than the number, water at three in the afternoon warmer.
Low-eighties water means no gasp at the step-in and no clock on how long you stay. Children go in and stay in, an hour of snorkeling needs nothing on your back, and the swim before breakfast is as reasonable as the one after lunch. Anyone who chills fast will still feel it after ninety minutes, and a rash guard does more for that than a towel does.
We found no monthly wind or swell series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figures for either. What the calendar does settle is the tropical question: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so March falls entirely outside it. The month-by-month risk page lays out those dates in full.
How busy is Negril in March? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
March sits squarely in the dry half of the Jamaican year, and the reasons North American winter traffic lands on it are the same ones in the table: under an inch of rain, a sea at 82.6°F, no storm season until June. Where the month ranks on price we cannot tell you. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Negril, so we crown no month cheapest and none most expensive.
No booking-window data turned up for the town either, so we offer no rule about how many weeks out to reserve. What the dates justify is booking the flight and the nights in one sitting, since the same winter demand pulls on both. Fares and routes are handled in flights from the US, and the ground leg from Montego Bay is its own decision, covered in the transfer guide.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage and no per-night dollar figure. The workable move is to ask the property for the all-in nightly total in writing, taxes and any resort or service charge included, before a deposit leaves your card. Our trip cost breakdown shows which lines usually get quoted separately.
If one upgrade repays itself in March, it is a west-facing room on the water. Sunset arrives at 6:24 pm, every evening of the trip, and the difference between stepping outside for it and arranging a ride to it compounds over five nights. Which stretch of shore suits you is a separate question, sorted in where to stay in Jamaica.
Things to do in Negril in March

Book a boat morning three days ahead in March and the odds sit with you: 1.9 measurable rain days across the month against April’s 3.0, and 0.95 inches of rain against April’s 1.33. That margin is what lets a March itinerary carry fixed outdoor commitments instead of floating ones, whether that is a charter, a cliff-jumping afternoon or a day trip inland.
Seven Mile Beach runs the length of the town’s north shore and faces west; the West End cliffs take over where the sand stops, and the lighthouse road runs out to the point beyond them. Admission prices and opening hours for those spots did not check out against a primary source, so we quote none. The one figure we can attach to all three is the water: 82.6°F off Negril this month.
Across February, March and April the sea moves 3.0°F, from 81.7 to 84.7, while rainfall nearly doubles from 0.75 to 1.33 inches. So the seasonal change you feel at the cliffs is mostly in the air and the sky, not underwater. March lands at the point where the afternoon reaches 83.3°F, 1.4°F short of April, and the rock underfoot is still dry most days.
We did not verify which beach access points charge and which do not, so we name no free ones. What costs nothing by arithmetic is the light: 12 hours 05 minutes of it on March 15, ending in a sunset at 6:24 pm visible from any west-facing stretch of sand or rock in town.
Negril in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs with the light. Sunrise is 6:19 am, so a 7:00 walk on Seven Mile Beach happens on cool sand. First swim around 9:30, when the water has climbed toward its 82.6°F daily maximum. Lunch and shade from noon to three, the hours that carry the 83.3°F high. Back in the water at four, on the sand facing west by six, sunset at 6:24 pm, dinner after seven.
Day two moves to the West End: cliffs and snorkeling in the morning, the lighthouse road in the late afternoon, sunset from the rocks instead of the sand. If one of the month’s 1.9 wet days lands on you, push the boat to the next morning rather than canceling it, because a full inch of rain arrives on roughly one day per ten Marches. Two nights is the minimum this plan needs.
Negril in March vs February and April
| Measure | February | March | April |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.6°F | 83.3°F | 84.7°F |
| Average low | 73.6°F | 74.0°F | 75.5°F |
| Precipitation | 0.75 in | 0.95 in | 1.33 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.3 | 1.9 | 3.0 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 81.7°F | 82.6°F | 84.7°F |
Air temperature barely separates the three: 0.7°F between February and March, another 1.4°F into April. Rain does the separating. February runs driest at 0.75 inches and 1.3 measurable days, March adds 0.20 inch and 0.6 of a day, and April jumps to 1.33 inches over 3.0 days. The sea climbs steadily through the set, 81.7 to 82.6 to 84.7°F.
Shift four weeks later and you buy 2.1°F of extra sea warmth and a slightly warmer evening, at a cost of 1.1 more rain days and roughly 40 percent more rainfall. Shift four weeks earlier and you keep the driest numbers of the three, with the water 0.9°F cooler and nights 0.4°F down. Our Negril in February page runs the same measurements for that side of the choice.
Is March a good time to visit Negril?
Yes, for anyone whose trip runs on water, daylight and outdoor plans that need to hold. Under an inch of rain, two measurable wet days, a sea at 82.6°F and zero exposure to the hurricane calendar make a five-night beach trip about as predictable as the Caribbean gets. No, for anyone who needs a guaranteed low season rate, because we have no rate data to promise one.
If the warmest possible water is the point, April wins by 2.1°F and charges 3.0 rain days for it. If the driest possible sky is the point, February takes it at 0.75 inches, with the sea 0.9°F cooler than March. The national view across all twelve months sits in the best time to visit Jamaica, and Negril vs Ocho Rios handles the other half of the question.
What no other month pairs is February-grade dryness with water that has already reached 82.6°F, plus a full twelve hours of daylight to spend in it.
The last word
Book the west-facing room, put the boat morning on a weekday you can move, and keep the rest of the days loose enough to follow the light. Then pack for the nights, not the afternoons: March lows average 74.0°F, only 0.4°F above February’s and 1.5°F below April’s, which is the whole reason a single long-sleeve layer earns its space in the bag and a jacket never does.
