Negril in January: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Prices

Negril occupies the western tip of Jamaica, and it comes in two halves: the long sand of Seven Mile Beach to the north, the limestone cliffs of the West End to the south. In January both sit in the driest stretch of the winter. The month averages 0.63 inches of rain, with 1.4 days wet enough to measure, and it falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season that NOAA dates June 1 to November 30.

The sea runs a shade cooler than in December, 82.7°F against 84.3°F, a gap you would need a thermometer to catch. The change you will notice is human: the month sits squarely inside the northern-winter travel season, when both coasts fill with people who left snow at home. If your dates are still open, the 12-month verdict weighs January against the other eleven.

January gives Negril the driest air of the three winter months we compared, a sea still at 82.7°F and a crowd that arrives with the season.

Go for: swimming and boat days that need almost no weather hedge, 1.4 wet days in an average January, and a cliff sunset that lands before 6 pm so dinner still happens after dark.

Think twice before: counting on a quiet beach or a bargain room. January runs inside the northern-winter season, and we found no monthly rate series for Negril, so we promise no discount.

Every figure here comes from two model-based datasets rather than a weather office in Negril: ERA5 reanalysis for the air, Open-Meteo’s marine series for the water. Both are averages of Januarys past, 1991-2020 for the air and 2015-2024 for the sea, so they describe a typical month and not the one you will land in.

Daytime highs average 82.0°F and nights bottom out around 73.9°F. Those normals are ERA5 reanalysis published through Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 18.2683° N, 78.3475° W. A reanalysis is a model’s reconstruction of the air over western Jamaica rather than a reading from an airport thermometer, and the two can part company by a couple of degrees, usually on the overnight minimum. We have no station series for Negril itself, so we serve the grid cell and say which it is.

The rain total for the whole month is 0.63 inches, spread over 1.4 days that reach a tenth of an inch. That is measurable rain roughly one day in twenty-two, and a day reaching a full inch does not appear in the January average at all. In practice you are planning around a shower that crosses the coast and moves on, not an afternoon lost indoors, which is why boat trips and long beach days need almost no fallback in this month.

Between the average high and the average low sits 8.1°F, a narrow swing by winter standards anywhere else. It still matters twice a day: at the 6:46 am sunrise, and after dark on the West End, where the breeze comes off open water. One long-sleeve layer and something for your shoulders covers it, and our packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.

On January 15 the day runs 11 hours 11 minutes, sunrise at 6:46 am and sunset at 5:58 pm in Jamaica time, which holds year-round with no daylight saving shift. Light is therefore your scarcest resource: anything you want to see from a boat has to happen before 5 pm, and dinner on either coast takes place in full dark.

Can you swim in Negril in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Negril averages 82.7°F in January, taken from Open-Meteo’s marine series as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. That last detail changes how you read the number: it is the warmest point of a typical day, a shade above what a 24-hour mean would give, so treat 82.7°F as the afternoon figure and expect the first swim after sunrise to feel a touch cooler.

Put the two numbers side by side and the month explains itself: an average afternoon high of 82.0°F in the air, 82.7°F in the water. Less than a degree separates them, so walking in registers as nothing at all, and neither does walking out with the wind on you. Nobody in Negril is discussing wetsuits in January, and a snorkeling session long enough to chill you is a matter of hours rather than minutes.

We could not verify a January wind or swell series for the water off Negril, so no wave heights and no wind speeds appear here. What the month does carry is the rain figure above, 0.63 inches and 1.4 wet days, and a calendar clear of tropical storms. For how the two coasts differ on water conditions in general, the Negril and Ocho Rios comparison is the place we treat it.

How busy is Negril in January? Crowds, booking and prices

January belongs to the northern-winter travel season, and the reason is on the calendar rather than in the brochures: the hurricane season ends on November 30, and the driest weeks follow it. We found no monthly occupancy or room-rate series for Negril, so we crown no month cheapest and no month dearest. What we will say plainly is that your dates in January compete with every other winter vacation aimed at the Caribbean.

Flights and the road west carry the least slack. The drive from Montego Bay is the leg most people leave until last, and it is the one that decides whether you reach the beach in daylight, given a 5:58 pm sunset. Sort the flight, then the room, then the ride: flights from the US and airport transfers cover both. We have no booking-window data for January, so we give no number of weeks.

We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears here. Read the tax line on your booking confirmation before you compare two rooms, because a nightly figure quoted without it and one quoted with it are not the same offer. Our running estimate of what a trip costs, nights included, lives in the Jamaica trip-cost guide.

One line in the budget genuinely changes the month, and it is where the bed sits. With daylight ending at 5:58 pm, a room you can walk back to from the sand or from the cliff edge buys you the last hour of light instead of spending it in a taxi. Beachfront on Seven Mile and cliffside on the West End are two different holidays, and the where-to-stay guide separates them.

Things to do in Negril in January: Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs

What January allows, that September does not, is a plan made a week out and kept. The month sits outside the hurricane season entirely, and its 0.63 inches of rain across 1.4 wet days means a boat day, a snorkeling morning or a full day on the sand rarely needs a plan B. December, for comparison, brings 0.90 inches over 1.7 wet days.

The two anchors are the ones you came for. Seven Mile Beach is the swimming half, with the sea at 82.7°F on a typical January afternoon and air at 82.0°F above it. The West End cliffs are the sunset half, facing an open western horizon that January closes at 5:58 pm. We could not verify current entry or boat prices for Negril operators, so none appear here; the ranked list, with what each visit takes, sits in things to do in Jamaica.

Across December, January and February the water moves more than the air does: 2.6°F on the sea surface against 0.6°F on the daytime high. So January’s difference at these places is not warmth but light and dryness. Eleven hours of daylight compresses the day, the low rain total leaves it intact, and a snorkeling trip pushed to the afternoon still finishes with an hour to spare before dark.

Free this month, as in every month: the sand, the swim and the sunset from the cliff path, which needs nothing but arriving by half past five. We could not verify any dated January event in Negril, so we name none, and you should treat any festival date you see elsewhere as worth confirming with the organizer.

Negril in January: a two-day itinerary

Day one follows the light. Sunrise at 6:46 am, water by 7 while the air is still near the overnight 73.9°F and the beach belongs to whoever is awake. Mid-morning goes to the boat or the reef, the hottest hours to shade and a long lunch, then 4:30 pm heads for the West End. Sunset at 5:58 pm, dinner by 7 in full dark. That sequence gets a 12-hour day out of 11 hours 11 minutes of sun.

Day two reverses it: the cliffs and the swimming spots in the cool morning, Seven Mile Beach in the afternoon when the sea reaches its 82.7°F daily peak. If one of January’s 1.4 wet days lands on you, remember that no day in the average month reaches a full inch, so move the water plan to the morning and hold the afternoon loose rather than writing the day off.

Negril in January vs December and February

Measure December January February
Average high 82.6°F 82.0°F 82.6°F
Average low 75.2°F 73.9°F 73.6°F
Precipitation 0.90 in 0.63 in 0.75 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 1.7 1.4 1.3
Sea surface (daily maxima) 84.3°F 82.7°F 81.7°F

On daytime warmth the three months are indistinguishable: 82.6°F in December, 82.0°F in January, 82.6°F again in February, a spread of 0.6°F. Nights separate them slightly, with December the mildest at 75.2°F and February the coolest at 73.6°F. Rain puts January in front at 0.63 inches, and the sea does the real drifting, from 84.3°F in December down to 81.7°F by February, all on the same reanalysis and marine series.

Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 1.6°F of sea temperature and lose a quarter inch of dryness, plus you land in the holiday weeks. Shift four weeks later and February hands you the fewest wet days of the three, 1.3, while the water drops to 81.7°F and the nights run 0.3°F cooler than January’s. Neither move changes what you wear at noon.

Is January a good time to visit Negril?

For anyone whose trip is built around being in the water, yes: 82.7°F sea, 82.0°F air, 0.63 inches of rain and no storm season to insure against. For travelers who want a quiet beach or a soft rate, this is the wrong four weeks, and we say so without a rate series to prove the scale of it. Families with fixed school dates get the best weather-to-risk ratio of the winter here.

If the answer is no, pick by what you are chasing. December brings the warmest water of the three at 84.3°F and pays for it with 0.90 inches of rain and 1.7 wet days. February is the driest on frequency, 1.3 wet days, with the trade-off showing up in a sea at 81.7°F and the coolest nights of the three at 73.6°F.

No other month in this trio combines the lowest rain total, 0.63 inches, with a sea still above 82°F and a hurricane calendar that has been shut since November 30.

The last word

The decision that matters in January is not the month, it is the hour. Book the flight and the road transfer so you arrive in daylight, then treat 5:58 pm as a fixed appointment on the West End rather than a thing you get to later. One more figure for the nervous: the storm season’s statistical peak is September 10, and by January it is four months behind you. Everything else about this trip is packing, and picking your coast.
