It is not an airport thermometer, and it does not describe the inland Yucatán behind the city, which runs hotter and drier. Carry these normals to the beach, not to Valladolid.

Cancun weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days

The normals above are ERA5: ECMWF reconstructs the weather over a grid square and Open-Meteo averages the result, here across 1991 to 2020. That is a different product from a NOAA station normal, which is a real instrument at a named airport, and the two can disagree by a degree or more on the overnight low. Read this way, September in Cancun runs 84.7°F by day, 78.5°F at night, and collects 8.08 inches of rain.

Those 18.7 days with a tenth of an inch or more work out to measurable rain roughly two days in three. September hands you the warmest water of the late-summer run, 86.0°F against 85.2 in October and 84.8 in August on the same marine record, and it still runs 12 hours 18 minutes of daylight in mid-month, more than October will. Long snorkel sessions, late swims and a beach day that starts before breakfast are the plain advantages of these four weeks.

Playa Delfines, the wide public beach at the southern end of the hotel strip, asks nothing of you but a swimsuit. El Rey, the small Maya site on the lagoon side of the same road, is a short circuit of low platforms and open ground. Add the Museo Maya de Cancún for an indoor hour, and the ferry across to Isla Mujeres for a half-day. We hold no verified admission price or opening hour for any of them, so check each operator before you go.

The water at those beaches barely moves across the three months, from 84.8 to 86.0 to 85.2. The air and the rain do the moving. An open archaeological site with no shade lands very differently under an 84.7°F afternoon than at nine in the morning, and that is the whole scheduling lesson of September: ruins early, museum at two, water whenever the sky allows.

Move your trip four weeks later and you gain 3.7 drier days and afternoons that top out at 82.6°F instead of 84.7, which changes what an open ruin feels like at two in the afternoon. Is September a good time to visit Cancun?

Yes if the water is the point. Swimmers, snorkelers, families with small children who chill fast, and anyone booking a flexible fare will get the best sea of the late-summer calendar at 86.0°F. No if your trip depends on dry afternoons or a fixed date: a wedding, a single chartered boat day, a non-refundable week. Measurable rain on roughly two days in three is not a rumor, it is the 1991-2020 record.
