A manatee trip is a winter trip, and the reason is water temperature rather than preference. Water leaving the Upper Floridan aquifer stays relatively warm through the cold months, so when the river drops, the animals move toward the springs. Nothing about the spring has changed. The river around it has cooled, and the manatees follow the difference.
Two dates run the whole trip. Manatee season at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge runs November 15 to March 31. That same November 15 closes the spring run at Blue Spring State Park to swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing and paddling. The season that brings the animals is the season that shuts the water to you.

Those two dates decide more than the wildlife. A trip landing in early November still has the paddling window inside Three Sisters and no manatee season. A trip landing December 1 has the season and a boardwalk. January and February sit squarely inside the dates, December opens the holiday weeks, and the wider calendar is in the month-by-month verdict.
When is manatee season in Florida?
November 15 and March 31 are the two dates, and they belong to Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Blue Spring State Park works to the same November 15, closing its spring and run to swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing and paddling for the season. These are calendar dates published in advance, not a reading of the water, so a mild autumn does not move them and a cold snap does not bring them forward.
The mechanism behind the dates is simple enough to check on a thermometer. The spring run at Blue Spring holds a constant 72°F year-round, because the water comes up out of the Upper Floridan aquifer already relatively warm. That single number is why the place works as a refuge at all, and why manatees gather at and near Florida’s springs in the winter months rather than in June.

Paddle craft are allowed inside Three Sisters Springs between April 1 and November 14 only, which is to say outside manatee season. Plenty of winter itineraries are built the other way around, with a kayak rental booked for a January morning and the animals as the reason for the booking. You cannot have both.
Blue Spring does the same thing on the same date. From November 15 the spring and its run close to swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing and paddling for the manatee season, so the in-water half of a summer visit there is simply not part of a winter visit. What the park keeps open in season is the watching.
At Three Sisters the trails stay open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year-round, and the boardwalk above the springs is the in-season view. An entrance fee applies to those trails, but it is set by the City of Crystal River rather than by the refuge, and the federal pages point to the city for the figure.
Where can you see manatees in Florida in winter?
Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is described by the Fish and Wildlife Service as the only refuge created specifically for the protection of the manatee, and much of it is reachable only by water, with Three Sisters Springs offering a boardwalk for viewing from above. Blue Spring State Park is the other winter address, built for watching rather than swimming: 3,050 feet of boardwalk and three observation platforms, the longest boardwalk of any Florida spring park in the state’s 2024 inventory. Other spring parks sit in the same family of destinations.

The refuge publishes Manatee Manners material, meant to give visitors the awareness that keeps them from disturbing the animals, and it frames in-water viewing as a privilege and a responsibility toward a threatened species. One line travels with this trip everywhere: that Crystal River is the only place in the United States where swimming with manatees is legal. It appears on none of the Fish and Wildlife Service pages we read on September 8, 2026. What the refuge does say is that it is the only refuge created specifically to protect the manatee, which is a different statement, and the one we are willing to print.
We also carry no tour price, no operator name and no trail fee amount. Snorkel-tour rates move from season to season and none was verified, and the Three Sisters entrance fee belongs to the city’s schedule rather than the refuge’s. Anyone quoting you a figure for either should be able to say which of those two it is.
Then check the days you are actually free. The Three Sisters trails close on Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and two of those fall inside manatee season, which quietly removes a morning from a holiday-week trip. Build the week around the boardwalk, the 8:30 a.m. opening and the 72°F that brought the animals in, and the season does the rest of the work. It has been doing it a long time.
