Chania Beaches: Where to Swim and How to Reach Them

Chania has beaches for many moods, from golden bays a short bus ride from the Old Town to the pink-tinged sand of Elafonissi, a couple of hours away by road. For an easy day, stay close to town. For the postcard lagoons, rent a car and budget for long, winding drives. Distances here are bigger than the map suggests, so pick one corner of the region per day and pair beaches that sit close together.

Which Chania beaches are closest to the Old Town?

Nea Chora

Nea Chora is the easiest beach to reach on foot. From the Firka fortress at the Maritime Museum, follow the shore west for about ten minutes. The beach sits beside a marina, its fish tavernas serve coffee and meals, and the cafes and restaurants across the street run the sunbeds and umbrellas in summer.

Koum Kapi

East of the Venetian harbor, Koum Kapi is more a seafront stroll than a beach day. There is hardly any sand, though plenty of people swim here in the heat of summer. Walk the promenade from the Sabbionara Bastion toward the Chalepa neighborhood, stop for dinner at one of the restaurants along the way, and save your towel for somewhere else. When the sea is rough, waves can flood the beach and splash the walkway.

Chrissi Akti (Golden Beach)

Chrissi Akti is a curve of golden, grainy sand around a sheltered bay, backed by green hills and a few palm trees. The water is clear and shallow, so it suits families and nervous swimmers. In summer you'll find sunbeds, umbrellas, a playground, changing rooms, beach bars and lifeguards, plus plenty of free space for a towel. There's beach volleyball, and you can even take surf lessons. Bus 21 runs out from the center, the walk takes around 1 hour, and the drive is 5 to 10 minutes. Drivers should arrive before 10 a.m. to find parking.

Agii Apostoli

Keep riding bus 21 beyond Chrissi Akti and you arrive at Agii Apostoli, where a pine forest and park frame two small coves and one long, slim stretch of shore. The sand is golden, the water crystal clear, and the beaches have earned Blue Flags for cleanliness and safety. The Chapel of the Holy Apostles watches from the headland, and beach bars rent sunbeds and umbrellas. Paths run through the trees and along the coast, so hopping between coves is easy, and Chrissi Akti is a 5 to 10 minute walk away. The large municipal car park fills up, especially on evenings and weekends.

Agia Marina and Platanias

Farther west, the coast road runs through the modern resorts of Stalos, Agia Marina and Platanias. Many of the beach bars charge for sunbeds and ask for a minimum spend per person. Platanias is well connected by public bus.

Which beaches near Chania are a short drive away?

Stavros

Scenes from "Zorba the Greek" were filmed here. The gentle water makes it a favorite with families. In summer the beach fills with tavernas, sunbeds and umbrellas; out of season it's nearly empty and facilities are few. Buses come out several times a day.

Marathi and Loutraki

Marathi sits in a small cove that shields it from the wind, which keeps the water calm and inviting for a swim. A small port and pier split the beach in two, with the White Mountains in the distance. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and use the showers and changing rooms, and there are several tavernas nearby. Loutraki, next door, is a small sheltered bay with an organized beach. Both are about 25 minutes from town and close to the airport, so they make an easy swim before or after a flight. Expect crowds and full parking lots in peak season.

Seitan Limani

Seitan Limani, "Satan's Harbor," is a tiny strip of sand and pebbles at the bottom of a steep rocky inlet, with startling turquoise water. Wild goats often keep you company on the way. There are no facilities, so bring water, snacks, a parasol and sun protection, and go early, because the sand fills up fast. Buses run in summer, normally stopping in September, and boat trips from Kalyves include an hour here. Skip it when an east wind is blowing.

Which beaches are worth a day trip from Chania?

Balos Lagoon

Balos is white sand, sandbars and shallow turquoise water between a mountain and a rocky cape, and it ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Europe. By car, allow 1 to 1.5 hours, the last stretch on a rough dirt road to a parking area, then a hike of 20 to 45 minutes down to the sand and a tough climb back. Some rental companies don't allow that road, so ask before you book, and arrive early to get a parking spot.

The easier route is the boat from Kissamos port, which runs roughly from May to late October and usually stops first at Gramvousa Island. You get up to two hours there, enough for the beautiful beach below the Venetian fortress or the steep climb to the castle, rarely both. Facilities at Balos are limited to toilets, a few beach bars and rentals for sunbeds and umbrellas, so pack your own snacks and drinks. If strong western wind is forecast, save the trip for another day.

Falassarna

Falassarna, on the west coast about 31 miles (50 kilometers) from Chania, is a collection of beaches: a main beach more than 0.6 mile (1 kilometer) long, plus smaller coves to the north and south. Pachia Ammos is the broadest, sometimes fringed with pink sand, with the most facilities and watersports rentals. The northern end has natural rock pools that kids love. The coastline is so long that you can choose between organized sections with beach bars and sunbeds and quieter spots where you simply bring your own umbrella. The beach faces west, so come in the afternoon, swim for a few hours and stay for the sunset. Wind can pick up, so check conditions first. The drive takes about an hour, and buses run from May to mid-October.

Elafonissi

Elafonissi, in the island's southwest corner, is famous for shallow, crystal-clear water and sand that turns pink at the shoreline, tinted by crushed shells. Wade across the lagoon to the small island, where the far side is usually much quieter. The main beach has sunbeds, umbrellas, a taverna and snack bars, but bring your own supplies for a full day. Public buses run from Chania, a ferry sails from Palaiochora until early October, and many visitors come on tours. Wind can make the day tiring. Around Easter or in October, it's far calmer.

Kedrodasos

Kedrodasos lies about a mile along the coast from Elafonissi and feels like a different world: soft sand, turquoise water, juniper trees, dunes and small coves, and often just a handful of people. Drive in by turning left before you reach Elafonissi, park, and walk about ten minutes. The coastal E4 trail from Elafonissi involves some scrambling over rocks. It is a very isolated beach, so pack your own supplies, and consider pairing it with Elafonissi on the same trip.

Which beaches are worth visiting on the south coast?

Palaiochora and Pachia Ammos

Palaiochora, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Chania, is a laid-back seaside town, and its Pachia Ammos beach runs along the west side of town with powdery sand and shallow water. Some sections are organized, others quiet with trees for shade, and cafes and tavernas sit across the street. With kids, swim at the southern end by the Pal Hotel, where the waves are smallest. KTEL runs a bus from Chania.

Gialiskari, Anidri and Grammeno

A 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) dirt road leads from Palaiochora to Gialiskari, squeezing between a cliff and a rocky outcrop before the beach opens up below. Its two coves have clear water good for snorkeling, pine and cedar shade, a cafe, a taverna, watersports rentals and some sunbeds. Follow the hand-painted "Sandy Beach" signs to neighboring Anidri, a sandier beach with a taverna under the trees.

Grammeno comes in two parts: a family-friendly sheltered cove with beach bars, and a wild side backed by steep dunes, with tiny sandy coves hidden among the junipers.

Viena

Viena, about 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) west of Palaiochora, is a small beach of rock and sand where offshore rocks keep the clear water calm, making it one of the better snorkeling spots on Crete. Columns from the ancient city of Viena lie near the beach and in the water. You can walk there along the E4 trail from Krios, Kedrodasos or Elafonissi, or arrive by boat. There are no facilities.

Frangokastello

Frangokastello has soft golden sand and clear, shallow water that suits families, with a historic Venetian fortress standing guard over the coastline. Legend says the ghost warriors known as the Drosoulites appear near the castle in May. Sunbeds are paid, with plenty of room around them, and Orthi Ammos next door is a quieter, unorganized alternative.

Which Chania beach is best for families, snorkeling or a quiet swim?

  • Families: Chrissi Akti, Stavros, Marathi, Pachia Ammos in Palaiochora, Grammeno's sheltered cove and Elafonissi's shallows.
  • A quiet swim: Kedrodasos or Grammeno's wild side.
  • Snorkeling: Viena and Gialiskari.
  • Beach bars and music: Agia Marina.
  • Sunset: Falassarna.

When is the best time to visit Chania beaches?

Late September and October are excellent: the summer crowds thin out and the sea is still warm. May is also pleasant, with fewer tourists. June to August is peak season, hot and crowded, when Balos and Elafonissi are at their busiest. Summer winds on the north coast, the meltemia, cool things down, and many beaches sit in bays and coves that keep the water swimmable even when the wind blows.

How do you get to Chania beaches by bus?

KTEL runs the public buses around town and across the region, and most beaches near the city are on a route. Tickets for local buses are sold at kiosks, so buy two at once to cover the trip back. Longer routes, such as the one to Palaiochora, leave from the KTEL bus station on Kidonias Street, a short walk from the Old Town. Schedules can change, so check the current timetable on the official KTEL website and buy your ticket in advance to secure the departure you want.
