Chania in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Easter Season and What to Do

In April, the harbor of Chania starts to fill with tables set out along the waterfront, and the smell of grilled fish and wood smoke drifts through the Venetian alleys. Church bells carry over the rooftops as Easter approaches, and the lighthouse at the end of the old mole draws walkers out along the water. April is the month when this port town on the northwest coast of Crete turns from winter to spring, with the sea still cool and the terraces already open.

What is the weather like in Chania in April?

April in Chania is mild and spring-like, warm enough in the sun for sightseeing in shirtsleeves, with a clear step up from March and a noticeable step short of May.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
March 62.4 49.6 3.34 9.9 11 h 52 min 62.1
April 68.4 53.8 1.48 5.9 13 h 03 min 64.5
May 76.5 60.4 1.00 4.5 14 h 01 min 67.5

Rain is much less frequent than in March, though it has not disappeared. A few wet days are likely, so a light rain jacket earns its place in the bag. When it does rain, the Old Town has plenty of covered corners, museums and cafés to wait it out.

Lows stay in the low 50s, so a sweater or a light jacket is useful once you are out of the sun. At the other end, the afternoon sun is strong enough that sunglasses and a hat make sense, and sunscreen belongs in the day bag even when the air feels gentle.

The days are long now, which gives you generous room for a late start, a long lunch and a slow walk around the harbor before dinner. The light over the Venetian port and the stone of the old fortifications is clear and bright, good for photographs at both ends of the day.

Can you swim in Chania in April?

The sea near Chania averages about 64.5°F in April, which makes it bracing, better suited to a quick dip than to a long swim.

Nea Hora is the beach nearest to the Old Town, and it is the natural place to test the water if you want to get wet. Even if you only paddle, the beach is a pleasant place to spend an hour with your shoes off, looking back toward the town. The water warms through the spring, and by May it is a few degrees warmer, so the swimmers who come to Crete mainly for the sea tend to arrive later.

For visitors, April is a month for the coast rather than the water itself. A seaside lunch of grilled fish, a walk along the shore and an afternoon on a sunny stretch of sand are all part of the pleasure, with a swim as an optional extra for those who like cold water.

What to do in Chania in April

The big moment around this time is Greek Orthodox Easter, the most important celebration of the Greek year. It falls on a different date each year, between early April and early May.

In 2027, Good Friday is on April 30 and Easter Sunday on May 2, so the most solemn days land at the very end of the month. Churches fill with candlelight, processions wind through the streets and the whole town gathers for the holiday. Western Easter in 2027 falls earlier, on March 28.

In the weeks before Easter, bakeries fill with tsoureki, the sweet braided bread flavored with mahlepi, and with red-dyed eggs. Easter Sunday is traditionally marked with lamb roasted on a spit, and Easter Monday is also a holiday. Every Sunday of the year is a public holiday in Greece, a detail that shapes how some shops and offices run.

The Old Town and the harbor

The Old Town is centered around the harbor and is a maze of alleys and houses that reflect its Venetian and Turkish past. This is the heart of any visit, and April is a good moment for wandering it, with the terraces open and the light long. The old Venetian fortifications that once surrounded the town began to be built in 1538, and their stone walls still shape the waterfront.

The Topanas district is especially popular from April to October, so April marks the beginning of its season. Its lanes are lined with old houses, small hotels and restaurants, and it rewards slow walking with no particular goal. Stop for a coffee, follow a side street that looks interesting and let the alleys lead you back to the water.

At the harbor, the lighthouse at the end of the mole is a favorite destination for a stroll, and the waterfront cafés are a good place to watch the evening arrive. The terraces here serve classic Cretan food, including dakos (barley rusk topped with tomato and cheese), snails cooked with rosemary and dishes of wild greens.

Museums and the town’s past

Chania’s new Archaeological Museum stands at 15 Skra Street in Chalepa, and it replaces the former Archaeological Museum of Chania. It is a good choice for a day when the sky turns gray. The Historical Archive in Chania is the second most important in Greece, a reminder that the town has long been a place of record and administration.

Nea Hora, the nearest beach to the Old Town, is an easy addition to a day of walking, with a sea view and a chance to dip your feet in the water. Between the museums, the beach and the harbor, April can be filled without any need for a car.

Food and the countryside around Chania

Agriculture and tourism are the two main sources of wealth around Chania. The most common cultivated plants are olive trees and citrus, and wine, avocados, dairy and honey are also important products. In April you taste this directly: olive oil on everything, oranges and lemons in the market, thyme honey with thick yogurt for breakfast and local cheeses on the meze (small shared plates) table.

Raki, the clear grape spirit, is often poured at the end of a meal, and a tavern lunch can stretch comfortably into the afternoon. With the weather mild, a long table outside is the right way to spend it.

A two-day itinerary for Chania in April

Day 1 belongs to the Old Town and the harbor. Start with breakfast of yogurt and honey, then walk the harbor front to the lighthouse at the end of the mole, with the Venetian fortifications behind you. From there, dive into the alleys of the Old Town, with its Venetian and Turkish houses, and turn up into the Topanas district, which is especially lively from April onward.

Have lunch at a taverna in the lanes, ordering dakos, wild greens and grilled fish, and let the meal run long. In the afternoon, walk west to Nea Hora, the nearest beach to the Old Town, and take your shoes off at the water’s edge. Then return to the harbor for the evening, when the waterfront tables fill and the terraces begin to light up.

Day 2 moves out of the Old Town. In the morning, visit the new Archaeological Museum at Skra Street in Chalepa, which gives context to the island’s past. Afterward, look into the Historical Archive’s story and the wider city, then lunch at a bakery or café for something light, such as cheese pies and fresh orange juice.

In the afternoon, visit the market streets for olive oil, honey, herbs and cheese to take home. For dinner, pick a different kind of place from the first night, perhaps a meze restaurant with a menu of small plates. If rain arrives on either day, shift the museum to that day and spend the rest in cafés and covered passages.

Is Chania busy in April?

April is the start of the warm season in Chania, so the town is gaining pace rather than at full speed. The Topanas district is especially popular from April to October, which means April is where its season begins.

What changes the feel of the month most is Easter. When Orthodox Easter falls late, as in 2027, with Good Friday on April 30 and Easter Sunday on May 2, the holiday gathers at the very end of April. Greek families return to their home towns, churches fill and the mood in the streets turns festive, with everyone moving toward the same celebration.

Outside the holiday, the town keeps a steady, unhurried rhythm. Terraces open one by one, and the harbor has room to stroll. Every Sunday is a public holiday in Greece, which affects how some shops and offices operate, and Easter Monday adds one more day off. For a visitor, this means the Old Town feels like a town at the start of its season, getting ready for the busier months ahead.

What to pack for Chania in April

Pack for spring: mild afternoons, cooler lows and a few days with rain. Layers are more useful than any single heavy item.

  • A light jacket or sweater, for the cooler lows.
  • A light rain jacket, for the days with rain.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, for the strong afternoon sun.
  • Comfortable shoes, for the stone alleys of the Old Town.
  • A swimsuit and a towel, for a quick dip at Nea Hora.
  • A small day bag, for market purchases such as olive oil and honey.

Good to know before you go

Easter shapes the month, and in 2027 Orthodox Easter falls on May 2, with Good Friday on April 30 and Easter Monday on May 3. Every Sunday is a public holiday in Greece, so expect some closures then. Rain is less frequent than in March but still possible, so keep a plan for gray days, with museums and cafés ready as indoor options.

Chania in April vs March and May

Moving the trip to March means a cooler sea, shorter days and many more days with rain. The Old Town is still lovely, but the terraces are less ready for long outdoor lunches, and the beach is not an option at all for people. Western Easter in 2027 falls on March 28, but that is a different celebration from the Orthodox one.

Moving to May brings warmer air, a sea a few degrees warmer and the longest days of the three months. Rain becomes rarer still, and the beach at Nea Hora turns into a more natural place to swim. In 2027, Orthodox Easter Sunday itself falls on May 2, so a trip in the first days of May catches the celebration.

Choose March if you want the town to yourself and do not mind jackets and umbrellas. Choose May for swimming and the warmest days. April sits in between, with a mix of walking weather, open terraces and the opening of the Topanas season.

Is April a good time to visit Chania?

Yes, April is a good time to visit Chania for travelers who love walking, eating and old streets more than lying on a beach. The weather is mild, the days are long and the town is waking up for its season.

It is less ideal for anyone who wants warm sea swimming, since the water is still cool. On arrival, start at the harbor, walk out toward the lighthouse and get a feel for the Venetian waterfront before heading into the Topanas alleys.

What makes April special in Chania is the sense of a season about to begin: the terraces setting out their tables, the Easter bread appearing in the bakeries and the church bells announcing the most important holiday of the Greek year.
