Glyfada Beach on Corfu: What to See Nearby, Getting There, Best Months and Tips

Arriving at Glyfada Beach means leaving the stone-paved alleys of Corfu’s Old Town for the open edge of the Ionian Sea, where the first thing you notice is the horizon and the sound of the water. This is a beach day on an island that has been shaped by Venetian, French and British hands, and the day can start or end among its palaces and cafés.

Is visiting Glyfada Beach worth it?

Corfu is one of the Ionian islands and is counted among the most popular islands in the Mediterranean, so a beach here comes with a great deal on offer around it.

What sets Glyfada apart from a plain stretch of shore is the company it keeps. A day by the water can be followed by an evening on the Liston, the esplanade in Corfu town lined with upscale restaurants and European-style bistros.

The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of palaces, squares, churches and stone-paved alleys. The Achilleion palace, built for an empress, is also on the island. Few beaches in Greece sit within reach of so much that is not the beach.

Corfu also has a character of its own, and you feel it as soon as you step off the shore. It is the one place in Greece where cricket is popular, a habit left by the British, and you may see a match on the green in town.

The island’s Ionian identity, with its Italianate squares and its sense of having looked west as much as east, runs through the food, the architecture and the pace of the evenings. Glyfada gives you the sea part of that picture, and the rest is a short outing away on the same island.

What to see at Glyfada Beach

The main sight is the sea itself, the Ionian light on the water and the shoreline you came for. Around it, Corfu offers four places that turn a beach day into a fuller visit.

The Old Town of Corfu

Corfu Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007, and it is the best reason to leave the beach for an evening. It is a place of palaces, squares, churches and stone-paved alleys, the kind of town where every turning opens onto another small piazza.

The protected area covers 70 hectares, with a wider buffer zone around it, so there is plenty of ground to wander. Look for the shuttered façades, the laundry hung across the alleys, and the church bells that mark the hours. It is a good counterweight to a day spent in a swimsuit.

The Liston promenade

The Liston is the esplanade of Corfu town, and it is where many upscale restaurants and European-style bistros are gathered. Its arcaded look gives it a Parisian air, and it faces the open green of the town’s cricket ground, which is a very Corfiot sight.

Think of it as the place for a coffee, an aperitif or a long dinner after the sea. Order a Greek coffee or an ice-cold drink and watch the town stroll by. It pairs naturally with a salt-tired day on the shore.

The Palace of St. Michael and St. George

This palace in Corfu town was built in 1815 by Sir Thomas Maitland and is made of white Maltese stone. It is a reminder of the British years on the island, and its pale stone stands out against the older Venetian streets around it.

You look at it for its façade and for what it says about Corfu’s layered past. It makes a natural stop on the same outing as the Liston, since both are part of the town’s historic core.

The Achilleion palace at Gastouri

The Achilleion palace stands near Gastouri and was built for Empress Elizabeth of Austria. It was purchased in 1907 by the German emperor William II, so it carries two imperial stories in a single building.

It is the place to go when you want the island’s palace side rather than its town side. Pair it with a beach day for a trip that moves from imperial rooms to open sea.

Hours, tickets and rules

The visit to Glyfada Beach is built around the sea, and the sights that go with it on Corfu are the Old Town, the Liston and the two palaces. Each of these is a different kind of place, and each keeps its own rhythm of opening and closing, so a single timetable would not describe them.

The Old Town is a living district of alleys, squares and churches that people simply walk through, and the Liston is an esplanade of restaurants and bistros that you enjoy by sitting down. The Palace of St. Michael and St. George and the Achilleion are buildings with stories rather than seaside stops, and they belong to the part of the day you spend away from the water.

One certification is worth knowing by name on Greek coasts. The Blue Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education to a beach, marina or sustainable boating tourism operator that meets its standards. It is a mark of environmental management, and it tells you about how a shoreline is run rather than how pretty it looks.

How to get to Glyfada Beach

Most visitors reach Corfu by air, landing at Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias”. Flights from Athens International Airport take 1 hour 15 minutes, and flights from Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia” take 55 minutes. Those are the two connections that put you on the island from the Greek mainland.

From there, the beach is one of the places you reach on Corfu itself.

Beyond the flights, how you get from the airport or the town to the shoreline is a matter of the island’s own roads and the plans you make on arrival. Corfu is an island with a real town at its heart and villages like Gastouri scattered around it, so it rewards a traveler who decides each day where the sea and the sights should fit.

When to visit Glyfada Beach

For swimming and long days by the water, summer is the season that suits the beach, and daytime temperatures in Corfu city reach 91°F then. The rain and day counts are those of Corfu.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (inches) Days with rain (1 mm or more)
January 55.8 44.1 5.06 11.3
April 66.4 52.2 3.02 9.7
July 85.8 69.6 0.58 2.4
October 73.9 60.3 5.53 9.6

July is the dry month of the four, with only a couple of rainy days, and it is the month when a day on the shore needs sun protection. October is still warm enough in the daytime to enjoy the outdoors, but it brings a lot of rain, spread over many days, so a rain jacket belongs in the bag.

April sits between the two, with highs in the mid-60s and rain on a good share of the days, which makes it a month for the Old Town and the palaces more than for long hours on the shore. January is the wet end of the year, with mild winters in Corfu city around 50°F, and the sights in town are the better use of a day then.

Tips for your visit

In summer that means sun protection, since daytime highs are in the mid-80s, and in the wetter months it means a rain jacket. Add a swimsuit and a towel, and a change of clothes if you plan to go straight from the sea to dinner on the Liston.

Combine the beach with what Corfu does best. A day by the water pairs well with an evening in the Old Town, where the alleys and squares are at their liveliest around dinner. If you want a day with a different mood, turn to the Achilleion palace at Gastouri or the white Maltese stone of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George.

For families and travelers with limited mobility, the stone-paved alleys of the Old Town are worth keeping in mind when you plan the town part of the day. The beach and the palaces are best planned as separate outings, each with its own pace. Beyond that, the island is large enough that the plan is yours to shape.

Good to know before you go

Greece uses the euro, and a beach day on Corfu is a simple matter of bringing what you need for the sea and the evening. Summer heat is real on the island, so water and sun protection belong in the bag, and the rainier months call for a layer you can put on quickly. Corfu town, with its Liston cafés and Old Town restaurants, is where the day usually ends.
