Both temperature figures sit below December and February, and the month puts roughly one freezing night on the average calendar. It is also winter in the sense that matters to anyone weighing storm risk: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and January falls outside it.
What the month takes back is light. On January 15 the sun rises at 7:17 a.m. and sets at 5:51 p.m., which leaves 10 hours 34 minutes to spend and ends the outdoor day early. The trade is spring water that ignores the season while the air around it drops, and that gap is what pulls manatees inland to Blue Spring State Park.

The three winter months sit close together: December keeps afternoons 2.0°F warmer than January, February 3.1°F warmer, so light, crowds and the tax on a room decide more than the thermometer does. The normals below come from NOAA’s NCEI monthly series for 1991 to 2020, station USW00012815, the gauge at Orlando International Airport. That distinction is worth having: it is a physical thermometer at a fixed site, not a reanalysis grid cell averaged across a region. Average high 71.8°F, average low 49.5°F, 2.48 inches of precipitation. Every figure here describes the airport, and a single January can land well off a 30-year mean in either direction.
Rain arrives in few, decent doses. Four days in an average January record at least 0.10 inch, so measurable rain shows up roughly one day in eight, and 0.7 day reaches an inch or more. Divide the 2.48-inch total across those four days and each averages over half an inch, which is a wet morning rather than a gray week. Budgeting one indoor afternoon per five-day trip (est.) covers the statistical damage.
Between that 49.5°F low and the 71.8°F high sits a 22.3°F spread, and it lands inside a single day. A 7:17 a.m. start wants a fleece and long pants, while the same body at 2 p.m. wants short sleeves and has to carry the fleece for eight hours. The month’s working range is 71.8°F by day and 49.5°F at night, a gap of 22.3°F. Orlando has no coast of its own, and no monthly water series belongs to this city, so every water figure here is a spring gauge: a single instantaneous reading taken by the USGS on September 11, 2026, not an average of daily maxima and not a monthly mean. They are quoted as what they are, a snapshot of water that barely moves through the year.
In practice the morning is the only cold part of the day. Long sleeves at 7 a.m., a mid-layer for the first hour in line, short sleeves from late morning onward. Water shoes and a towel travel with you if a spring day is on the itinerary, because 75.6°F water against a 49.5°F dawn feels colder getting out than getting in.
Freezing nights are counted, not hypothetical: an average January records 1.1 nights at 32°F (0°C) or below at that airport gauge. Just over one night a month is no coat climate, but it is enough to make an unheated hotel pool useless for an evening, so ask about pool heating when you book the room and keep one warm layer in the suitcase.
How busy is Orlando in January? Crowds, booking and the 6% county room tax
January’s place in the calendar is easy to fix. It follows the holiday weeks and comes before March, when family school holidays fill the theme parks while college spring break weighs on the beach towns instead, spread across the month with no single week to dodge. What we do not hold is a monthly room-rate or occupancy series for Orlando, so no ranking of January against the other eleven months appears here.
Booking comes down to what moves by date and what does not. Disney and Universal price tickets dynamically by date, so any amount printed today is wrong within weeks and the operator’s own calendar is the only honest source. Brightline runs Miami to Orlando, about 235 miles in roughly three and a half hours, departing about every two hours and calling at Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach, with fares that also move by date and class.
The tax line is fixed and public. Orange County, where Orlando and the parks sit, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax, filed and paid with the 6% state sales tax, per Florida Department of Revenue form DR-15TDT. On a hotel bill that is twelve cents on the dollar before anything a property adds for resort fees or parking, and it reads the same in January as in July. The one line where paying more changes the month is ground transport. SunRail, the local commuter train, lists DeBary, Altamonte Springs, AdventHealth and Church Street among its stops, and its own schedule page names no airport and no theme-park station. We could read no SunRail fare at all: the operator prints none. Things to do in Orlando in January: Blue Spring manatees and 75.6°F spring water
January opens two things August keeps shut. The hurricane season is months away, and the 13.7 miles of hiking trail at Wekiwa Springs State Park are walkable at noon without the heat doing the deciding. Manatees are the second: they gather at and near springs in winter because water discharging from the Upper Floridan aquifer is relatively warm. The spring has not warmed at all. Wekiwa Springs State Park is the nearest spring to the city, and Florida’s 2024 facilities inventory counts 325 parking spaces, one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail and 1,435 feet of boardwalk. Blue Spring State Park, the winter manatee spring, counts 187 spaces, three observation platforms, six cabins and 3,050 feet of boardwalk, the longest at any Florida spring park in that inventory. Silver Springs, the glass-bottom-boat park, dwarfs both with 1,686 spaces and three launches.
Water temperature is the part that does not move. USGS gauges read 75.6°F at Wekiwa Springs, 75.0°F at Rock Springs in Kelly Park north of Orlando, and 74.3°F at Blue Spring, flowing 168 cubic feet per second, all on September 11, 2026. Those are single readings, not monthly means. The gap does the work: 75.6°F reads tropical after a 49.5°F dawn in January and unremarkable after an August afternoon.
No price for any of this comes from us. The Florida state parks site returned a 403 to our reads on September 11, 2026, entrance fees vary by park and by season, and we verified no per-spring manatee count, so no fee, no opening hour and no animal total is quoted here. What the parking counts do explain is why popular springs turn cars away: 325 spaces at Wekiwa, 187 at Blue Spring, against 1,686 at Silver Springs. Arrive early on a clear weekend.
Orlando in January: two-day itinerary and the 5:51 p.m. sunset
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 7:17 a.m. in mid-January, so leave in the dark for Blue Spring State Park and walk the 3,050-foot boardwalk before its 187 spaces fill. Swim or paddle at Wekiwa in the warm middle of the day, when the air and the 75.6°F water are closest together. Be back in town by 4 p.m., since the sun is gone at 5:51 and the slide toward 49.5°F starts with it.
Day two belongs to whichever theme park won the family vote, on the same clock: long sleeves at opening, short sleeves by eleven, the folded jacket back on at dusk. If one of January’s four wet days lands on it, a 0.62-inch average day passes through rather than settles in. December runs 2.0°F warmer by day and 3.4°F warmer at night than January. February is warmer still, 74.9°F against 71.8°F, and it is the driest of the three at 2.04 inches against 2.48 for both December and January. Rain days barely separate them: 4.0 in January, 3.8 in February, 3.7 in December. No sea temperature enters the comparison, because Orlando has no coast, and the spring gauges do not shift with the month.
Shifting four weeks later buys 3.1°F on the afternoon, 0.44 inch less rain and nights 2.9°F warmer at 52.4°F. Shifting four weeks earlier buys December’s 52.9°F nights and hands back the holiday weeks. January’s counter is the cold itself: manatees crowd the springs when the river around them cools, and the coolest afternoons of the three months are what a 13.7-mile trail network wants at noon.
Is January a good time to visit Orlando?
Yes for two kinds of trip, and no for a third. Families chasing theme parks without summer heat get 71.8°F afternoons and a 22.3°F daily spread they can dress for. Anyone who wants Florida wildlife from a boardwalk gets the month the manatees come inland. The no belongs to sun-and-pool travelers: 1.1 freezing nights, a 49.5°F average low and a 5:51 p.m. sunset make a poolside week a gamble rather than a plan.
If that is the trip, February is a closer fix than March. It runs 74.9°F by day, 52.4°F at night and 2.04 inches of rain, and it stays ahead of the family school holidays that crowd the theme parks in March. March also spreads college spring break across the beach towns with no single week to avoid, so a March booking carries two crowd problems instead of one.
One thing January holds alone among the three: a 49.5°F average low set against 75.6°F spring water, the widest air-to-water gap of the winter on these figures, and the condition the manatee gathering depends on.
The last word
Decide the airport before the hotel. MCO boarded 27,859,783 passengers in calendar year 2024, the busiest in Florida and ahead of Miami, while Sanford SFB boarded 1.4 million, and the two are not interchangeable: SFB lies north of MCO, and we give no mileage or drive time for it because the airport’s own site blocks our connections. Then pick the date, dress for 49.5°F at 7 a.m. and 71.8°F at 2 p.m., and keep one clear morning for 75.6°F water.
