Madeira in August: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Levada Trail Fees

In August, Madeira’s evenings run late. On August 15 the sun sets at 20:53 Madeira time, the sea off the island averages 76.6°F at its afternoon peak, and Funchal’s harbor logs a handful of cruise calls against the winter procession. For a trip built on swimming, walking and eating outdoors, the calendar is on your side.

One rule shapes every August visit from 2026 on. Since January 1, 2026, every classified levada and vereda charges EUR 4.50 per person and must be booked online, in 30-minute entry slots. From the airport, the Aerobus runs 08:30 to 22:00 and reaches Praia Formosa in 50 minutes, passing through central Funchal. Its fare is not printed, so call the operator on 291 201 151. Every air and rain figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 522, on Funchal’s south coast at 58 m. The rest of the island does not share it. High ground runs colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps its own weather. Read the normals below as a Funchal reading, and pack separately for the mountains. Madeira weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days

Portugal’s national weather service, IPMA, publishes 1991-2020 normals for station 522 in Funchal, a real thermometer at 58 m (about 190 ft), and those are the numbers we use. An average August day there peaks at 80.2°F and drops to 69.3°F overnight, with 0.05 inches of rain across the whole month. Many weather apps print reanalysis data instead, averaged over a grid cell of land and sea, and those can land on different figures from a station reading.

IPMA counts 0.4 days in an average August with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) of rain, and 0.0 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. In practice, a single wet day at the station turns up in roughly two Augusts out of five, and a proper soaking does not register in the average at all. Those thresholds are IPMA’s own. US tables start counting at 0.10 inch, so a Funchal count and an American one are not interchangeable.

Afternoon and night sit 10.9°F apart at Funchal, from 80.2°F down to 69.3°F. On the coast, a light long-sleeve layer covers a late dinner. The mountain trails change the bag: PR1 runs between 1,857 m and 1,491 m, far above the station, so a warm layer and a rain shell go in the daypack whatever Funchal reads. On August 15, Madeira gets about 13 hours 23 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 07:30 and sets at 20:53 Madeira time (06:30 and 19:53 UTC, with the island one hour ahead in summer). Light fades around 21:00, long after the Funchal cable car’s last run at 17:45 and after the Cabo Girão skywalk closes at 20:00, so plan sunset on a Funchal seafront bench or your own terrace.

Can you swim in Madeira in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Madeira at 76.6°F in August, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean. If another table prints a lower August sea temperature, it may be averaging day and night together, and both figures can be right.

For a swimmer, 76.6°F against an 80.2°F afternoon high puts the water about 3.6°F below the air at its warmest. Morning water sits a little under that daily peak, so swim in the afternoon if you want the figure the average describes. After dark the sea stays warmer than the 69.3°F air low, and an evening dip in the free Cachalote pools at Porto Moniz feels mild in the water and cooler the moment you climb out.

Our sources carry no wind or swell series for August, so we cannot tell you how often the north coast turns rough. How busy is Madeira in August? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel-rate or occupancy series for Madeira, so we crown no month expensive or cheap. The harbor we could measure. The port authority, APRAM, logged 3 cruise calls in August against 44 in February, and 4,071 cruise passengers in July against 113,839 in February. We read those from charts that plot 2025 and 2026 side by side and give the higher, more recent series. The seasonal shape is identical in both years, and summer Funchal sits far from its busiest cruise mornings.

Trail bookings open only online, on SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal, and they apply to solo walkers, groups and guided walkers alike. Entry slots run every 30 minutes from sunrise to sunset, which gives a mid-August trail about 26 slots a day. Cable car e-tickets stay valid for 60 days, so you can buy them about eight weeks before you fly. Blandy’s advises booking tours ahead, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges take no bookings at all. We found no lead-time data for hotels, so we give no week count for rooms.

Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid stay in the municipality, whatever site you booked through, and the count starts again after an interrupted stay. Children 12 and under go free with ID, as do people with a disability of 60 percent or more and Madeira residents. We verified the rate for Funchal only, so we give no figure for stays elsewhere on the island.

Of the costs we checked, only the trail passes change what an August trip can hold when you spend more. Two single trails at EUR 4.50 cost EUR 9, the price of a day pass, so the pass starts saving from the third trail of the day, and mid-August’s 13-plus hours of light leave room for it. The three-day pass costs EUR 22.50 and the seven-day EUR 52.50, both EUR 7.50 a day. PR1, the Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo crossing, sits outside the day pass at EUR 10.50, or EUR 4.50 for the out-and-back to Pedra Rija.

Things to do in Madeira in August

In August, Madeira’s main sights run on summer timetables. The Monte Palace garden opens 09:00 to 19:00 from April to September, an hour past its October-to-March close. The Porto Moniz pools keep 09:00 to 19:00 hours in summer against 17:00 in winter, and the Cabo Girão skywalk opens 08:30 to 20:00 from March to October. Trail slots follow the sun, so a mid-August trail offers about 26 half-hour entries, enough to fit a morning walk and an afternoon swim into one day.

Above Funchal, the cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 at EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way, and its top station opens onto the Monte Palace Tropical Garden: 70,000 square meters (about 17 acres) of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, at EUR 18 for adults. The Monte sledges, carros de cesto steered by two carreiros in white, cost EUR 30 for one, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three. The serviced Porto Moniz pools charge EUR 3 for changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post. Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs a 45-minute Premium Tour with three Madeira wines at EUR 23.

Funchal’s 80.2°F afternoon sits 3.6°F above the 76.6°F sea, a gap that makes the pools a mild cool-down on a warm day. At the Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform on the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos, closing time is 20:00 and sunset 20:53, so you leave in daylight after paying EUR 3 (a price from concordant third-party sources, to confirm on site). The Monte Palace museum still shuts at 17:00, two hours before the garden. The Monte sledges run Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, and their ban on three-person rides over wet ground should rarely apply on Funchal’s 0.4 rain days, though Sundays stay shut.

The Cachalote pools beside the Porto Moniz complex are free and open at all hours, so an evening swim after the serviced pools close at 19:00 costs nothing. Children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, children 12 and under walk the Cabo Girão skywalk and PR1 free, and children up to 6 ride the cable car free, with ages 7 to 14 paying half. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira, on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, holds more than 2,000 exotic species, though we could not verify its admission price.

Madeira in August: a two-day itinerary

Start day one on a weekday at the Mercado dos Lavradores when it opens at 07:00 (it closes at 14:00 on Saturday and all Sunday, when the Mercado da Penteada opens 07:00 to 13:00 instead). Take the 08:45 cable car up on a EUR 16 one-way ticket and walk into Monte Palace at 09:00, giving the museum its turn well before 17:00. Queue for a sledge before midday, since the office can close early on long-queue days. After lunch, join Blandy’s 14:00 or 15:00 English tour. Head out to Cabo Girão by 19:00, ahead of its 20:00 close, and be back in Funchal for dinner as the sun sets at 20:53.

On day two, book a morning slot on SIMplifica, for example PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes or PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, both open when we checked on September 8, 2026. PR1 runs 6.1 km one way in about 3 hours and turns one-way past Pedra Rija, so anyone who carries on finishes at Pico Ruivo. Spend the afternoon in the Porto Moniz pools until 19:00. If the weather turns, check trail-by-trail status first, since PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were restricted that same day, and swap in the Botanical Garden or a Blandy’s tour. Madeira in August vs July and September

Side by side at Funchal, the three months run close on heat and split on rain. August’s 80.2°F high beats July by 2.5°F and September by 0.3°F, and its 69.3°F low sits 1.8°F above July and 0.6°F above September. At sea, the daily peaks average 75.0°F in July, 76.6°F in August and 76.1°F in September. September brings 0.91 inches over 3.1 days of 1 mm or more, against August’s 0.05 inches over 0.4 days. July carries slightly more rain by total, 0.07 inches, spread over fewer days, 0.3.

Move four weeks earlier to July and you give up 2.5°F on the afternoon high and 1.6°F in the water for skies just as dry, a fair trade if heat wears on you. Move four weeks later to September and you keep almost all the warmth, 0.3°F off the high and 0.5°F off the sea, but trade 0.4 rain days for 3.1, roughly a wet day in every ten. Is August a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, for swimmers, trail walkers and anyone who wants dinner outdoors on nights near 69°F: August has the warmest water of the three summer months compared and a rain total of 0.05 inches at Funchal. Pick another month if 80°F afternoons tire you, or if you would plan a mountain crossing on the strength of a coastal forecast. PR1 runs between 1,857 m and 1,491 m, where the Funchal normals stop applying.

If the answer is no, pick July. Its afternoon peak runs 2.5°F cooler, its 0.3 rain days keep it almost as dry, and its sea still averages 75.0°F at the daily high. September comes second, for walkers who accept about three wet days in exchange for August-level warmth.

August pairs the warmest sea of the three months, 76.6°F at its daily peak, with the smallest rain total, 0.05 inches, and sunsets at 20:53.

The last word

Book the trail slot before you book dinner. SIMplifica is the only way onto a levada, and the rest of a long August day fits around that one entry time. Then land, board the Aerobus toward Funchal, and ignore any old map that still shows stop 9, Terminal SAM: the official timetable marks it disabled.
