Madeira in August: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Levada Fees

August is the month when Madeira’s weather stops being a variable. At the IPMA station in Funchal, the 1991-2020 normals give an average high of 80.2°F, an average low of 69.3°F and 0.05 inches of precipitation for the entire month. The sea off the island averages 76.6°F, the warmest reading of the summer trio. Nothing about that combination is a compromise.

What August takes back is quiet, and one thing more since January 1, 2026: every classified walking trail on the island now charges an access fee and requires a booking made online in advance. The levadas that used to be a spontaneous morning are a EUR 4.50 reservation with a 30-minute entry slot. Peak month, paperwork included.

Madeira in August is one chapter of a wider Portuguese calendar. The neighboring months sit at July and September, the country-wide verdict at best time to visit Portugal. Madeira weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days

Those figures come from a thermometer, not a model grid cell. IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, runs station 522 in Funchal at 58 meters above the water, and its 1991-2020 normals put August at 80.2°F by day and 69.3°F at night. One caveat travels with the numbers: they describe the south coast at 58 meters and nothing else. High ground on this island is colder and far wetter, and the north coast keeps its own weather entirely.

The rain line is where Madeira in August gets strange. An average August records 0.4 days with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) and no day at all reaching 10 mm (0.39 inch). Those are IPMA’s thresholds rather than the 0.10-inch line that US monthly tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Read straight, it means most Augusts in Funchal pass without a single day that would wet a trail, and 0.05 inches is the whole month’s total.

Day to night, the gap is 10.9°F, small enough that a terrace at 22:00 still works in short sleeves. The layer you pack is not for Funchal at all. It is for the walk that begins at Pico do Areeiro, several thousand feet above the station that produced the 80.2°F, where the coastal reading stops applying and wind does the rest. On August 15 the island gets 13 hours 23 minutes of daylight, with the sun up at 07:30 and down at 20:53 in local summer time. That length has a consequence since the 2026 rules arrived: trail entry slots run in 30-minute steps from sunrise to sunset, so an August day offers a far longer ladder of bookable slots than any winter day does.

Can you swim in Madeira in August? Sea temperature at 76.6°F

Yes, and with the best number of the year. Sea surface off Madeira averages 76.6°F (24.8°C) in August, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024. One nuance matters for expectations: that average is built from daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, which makes it a shade warmer than a full 24-hour mean would read. Early morning water sits a little below the headline figure.

In practice, 76.6°F is the difference between a dip and a swim. July averages 75.0°F and September 76.1°F, so August takes the summer by a small margin, and the margin is exactly the one people notice: no wetsuit, no bracing, no ten-minute limit. A long crossing of a bay stops being a feat of will and becomes an afternoon.

On wind and swell we have nothing sourced. Our data carries no August wind or wave normal for Madeira, and a guess dressed as a figure is worse than a blank. What does exist as a live signal is the official trail status list, published trail by trail: on September 8, 2026, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were restricted while five others ran.

How busy is Madeira in August? Crowds, prices and the Funchal tourist tax

August is the month when European school holidays and Madeira’s demand curve arrive together, and beds price to match. Our sources carry no monthly price index for the island, and an invented percentage would be worth less than a blank line. What can be pinned down is the part the calendar cannot move: trail access at EUR 4.50 a person, the cable car at EUR 22 return, the Monte sledges at EUR 30 to EUR 60. The August premium lands on rooms and flights.

Booking now has a hard edge, and it is not the hotel. Every classified trail, every PR-numbered levada and vereda, requires a reservation made online only, through SIMplifica, the Regional Government’s services portal. It applies to solo walkers, to groups and to anyone walking with a company alike, and you choose a 30-minute entry time. The cable car’s e-ticket stays valid 60 days after purchase, so it can be bought before you fly. The Monte sledges, by contrast, cannot be booked at all.

Funchal adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the region who can prove a local tax address.

The one line where spending more genuinely changes the month is getting off the coast. The 80.2°F normal belongs to a station at 58 meters, while the trails that were open on September 8, 2026 include PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro and PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, both starting high above it. A car buys the early slot up there. Walking with a company that holds an IFCN protocol also drops the fee to EUR 3 a head instead of EUR 4.50.

Things to do in Madeira in August: levada slots, the cable car and the Monte sledges

Dry ground is August’s specialty, and two attractions depend on it. The three-person wicker sledge does not run in rain or on wet ground at all, which in a month totaling 0.05 inches across 0.4 rain days is close to a guarantee. The second gift is length: 13 h 23 m of daylight on the 15th means the 30-minute trail slots stretch from 07:30 to sunset, so a levada at 08:00 and a summit walk after lunch fit the same day.

The named prices, for August as for any month. The Funchal cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 daily except Christmas, EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way, free under 7 and half price from 7 to 14. At its top station, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden asks EUR 18 for adults, free for children up to 14 with an adult, and keeps its April-to-September hours of 09:00 to 19:00, an hour later than winter, with the sculpture museum inside closing at 17:00. The sledges work Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, at EUR 30, EUR 40 or EUR 60.

Free is a shorter list than it was in 2025. Since January 1, 2026 the walking itself carries a fee, so the no-cost items are the exemptions: children up to 14 at Monte Palace when an adult pays, children up to 6 on the cable car, school groups in the garden, and residents of the Autonomous Region on every classified trail. Everyone else budgets EUR 4.50 per person per walk.

Madeira in August: two-day itinerary and sunrise times

Day one runs off the 07:30 sunrise. Book the 08:00 or 08:30 slot on PR 6, Levada das 25 Fontes, through SIMplifica before you leave home, at EUR 4.50 a head, and walk the wet-forest end of the island while the coast is still climbing toward 80.2°F. Late lunch in Funchal, swim at the warmest part of the afternoon, then ride up at 15:00 on the EUR 16 one-way. Museum first, since it shuts at 17:00, garden until 17:15, sledge down at EUR 40 for two before the 18:00 close. Sunset at 20:53 leaves a whole evening after that.

Day two goes high: PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro toward PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, earliest slot available, dressed for altitude rather than for the 58-meter reading. If the weather turns, check status trail by trail rather than assuming the island is open, the way PR 1.3 and PR 4 sat restricted on September 8, 2026. A wet morning also cancels the three-person sledge, and Sunday cancels the sledges outright, which makes the Monte Palace garden and its 70,000 square meters the covered fallback.

Madeira in August vs July and September

Across the three months, temperature barely argues. August tops the highs at 80.2°F against July’s 77.7°F and September’s 79.9°F, and the nights follow the same tight ranking. Rain is where the year turns: 0.07 inches in July, 0.05 in August, then 0.91 inches in September, with rain days jumping from 0.4 to 3.1. The water, meanwhile, holds: 75.0°F, 76.6°F, 76.1°F.

Shift four weeks later and you keep almost all of the sea, 76.1°F, while accepting eight times the rain days. Shift four weeks earlier and July gives back 2.5°F of daytime heat and 1.6°F of water for the same near-dry record. What September actually buys is thinner crowds once the holidays end, paid for in showers that can close a trail.

Is August a good time to visit Madeira?

For swimmers and for walkers who want the ground dry, August is the strongest month on the record: 76.6°F water, 0.05 inches of rain, 0.4 days that register at all. For anyone whose trip depends on space, it is the wrong four weeks. Peak European holidays land on a small island, the trail slots fill from a fixed number of 30-minute windows, and the sledge office can close early when the queue runs long.

If that reads like a no, take July rather than September. July keeps the dry record intact at 0.07 inches and 0.3 rain days, cools the day by 2.5°F to 77.7°F, and asks only 1.6°F of sea temperature in return. September brings quieter streets, but 0.91 inches and 3.1 rain days is the month where a booked slot on PR 6 can meet a restricted trail.

No other month in Madeira’s record puts the warmest sea of the year, 76.6°F, and the driest total of the summer, 0.05 inches, on the same fortnight.

The decision that matters in August is made online before you leave: 30-minute trail slots through SIMplifica, and a EUR 22 cable car e-ticket that keeps for 60 days. One line for the budget: Funchal’s EUR 2 a night tax caps at seven consecutive nights, and it starts again if you break the stay, so a week in town, three nights elsewhere, then two more in Funchal is charged twice.
