Madeira in January: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds, Trail Fees and Prices

Madeira in January means a 68.0°F afternoon in Funchal, a sea a fraction warmer at 68.6°F, and a sun that sets at 18:25. You have already chosen the island. The open question is the date: what January brings, what it takes away, and whether moving four weeks either way would suit your plans better.

Since January 1, 2026, every classified walking trail on the island charges an access fee and requires an online booking, with entry in 30-minute slots from sunrise to sunset. On January 15 that window lasts 10 hours 17 minutes. The month you travel decides how many slots exist in a day.

Madeira weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days

The normals below come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service: 1991-2020 averages from station 522 in Funchal, a real thermometer 58 m (about 190 ft) up on the south coast, not a model grid cell. It records an average January high of 68.0°F, a low of 57.7°F and 2.64 inches of precipitation. Those figures describe Funchal and not the whole island. High ground runs colder and far wetter, and the other end of a coast keeps its own weather, so read every figure here as a coastal reading before you pack for a mountain trail.

IPMA counts 6.2 January days with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) of rain, roughly one day in five, and 2.3 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. Expect a shower in most weeks and two or so real soakings a month, the kind that moves a plan indoors. Those thresholds are the Portuguese service’s own. US tables count from 0.10 inch, so a Funchal rain-day count and an American one do not line up.

Between the 68.0°F afternoon and the 57.7°F night sits a 10.3°F swing at sea level. Pack a T-shirt for a sunny Funchal lunch, a warm layer for dinner outdoors and a rain shell that folds small. Walkers need more: PR1 runs between 1,491 m and 1,857 m, far above the station, and we have no verified normal for that altitude. Our Portugal packing list covers the rest of the bag.

On January 15 the sun rises at 08:08 and sets at 18:25 local time (Madeira keeps UTC in winter), for 10 hours 17 minutes of daylight. Trail entry slots run from sunrise to sunset in 30-minute steps, which leaves about 20 slots a day in mid-January. A three-hour walk like PR1 needs an entry by 15:00 at the latest to finish in daylight.

Can you swim in Madeira in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine data put the sea surface off Madeira at 68.6°F in January, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Tables built on daily means will print a lower number for the same water, and we have not measured the gap.

For a swimmer, 68.6°F water sits within a degree of Funchal’s 68.0°F afternoon high, so sea and air feel alike in early afternoon and far apart at breakfast, when the air sits nearer the 57.7°F low. Keep swims short and aim for the warmest hours. The serviced volcanic pools at Porto Moniz, on the north coast, charge EUR 3 for changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post, with winter hours of 09:00 to 17:00.

We found no January wind or swell series we could verify, so we give no wave height and no wind speed. Ask at the serviced complex before getting in, and make any rocky entry a same-day decision based on what you see. The emergency number is 112, as everywhere in Portugal.

How busy is Madeira in January? Crowds and prices

Funchal’s port authority, APRAM, counted 113,210 cruise passengers in January 2026 across 41 ship calls, against 4,071 passengers and 3 calls in July. A winter morning can put four ships alongside, and their passengers head for the same old town, market and cable car you plan to use. APRAM publishes these as charts with 2025 and 2026 side by side. We give the higher, more recent series, and the winter-heavy shape holds in both years. We found no hotel-rate or occupancy series, so we crown no month cheap or expensive.

We could not verify how far ahead Funchal rooms fill in January, so we give no week count. The fixed bookings are clearer. Trail slots are mandatory and sold only online through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. Cable car e-tickets stay valid for 60 days after purchase, so you can buy them up to two months out. Blandy’s advises booking its tours ahead and allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges cannot be booked at all: tickets sell on site, for the same day only.

Funchal adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever site you book through, and it starts again if you check out and come back. Children of 12 and under are exempt with ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more. We did not verify the rules in other municipalities, so a stay outside Funchal may be taxed differently.

Trail passes cost EUR 9.00 for a day covering two trails or more, EUR 22.50 for three days and EUR 52.50 for seven, against EUR 4.50 for a single trail (EUR 3 through a tour company with an IFCN protocol). Of every January cost, this is the one where spending more changes the trip. With a wet day in five at Funchal and trail status shifting with the weather, a multi-day pass lets you rebook on a drier morning or switch to an open trail. PR1 sits outside the day pass, at EUR 10.50 for anyone over 12.

Things to do in Madeira in January

In January the Cabo Girão skywalk stays open past sunset. The glass platform on the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos closes at 19:00 from November to February, and the sun sets at 18:25 on January 15, so you can watch the light go and still have half an hour on the glass. Entry costs EUR 3, a figure from several concordant sources that we could not confirm on an institutional page.

The Funchal-Monte cable car costs EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way (children up to 6 free, 7 to 14 half price) and runs 08:45 to 17:45. At its top station, Monte Palace Tropical Garden spreads 70,000 square meters of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, for EUR 18 per adult, with children up to 14 free alongside an adult. The wicker sledges back down cost EUR 30 for one, EUR 40 for two, EUR 60 for three. In town, Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs a 45-minute Premium Tour with three wines for EUR 23, and the Botanical Garden holds more than 2,000 species.

From October to March, Monte Palace closes at 18:00 instead of 19:00, and its museum stops at 17:00 all year, so arrive by early afternoon. The serviced pools at Porto Moniz shut at 17:00 in winter, two hours earlier than in summer. The sledges sell only Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, and no three-person ride runs in rain or on wet ground. With 6.2 wet days in a Funchal January, keep the Monte morning movable.

The Cachalote pools beside the Porto Moniz complex are free and open at all hours. Browsing the Mercado dos Lavradores, the covered market in the old town, costs nothing between 07:00 and 19:00 on weekdays and 07:00 and 14:00 on Saturday. It is shut on Sundays and public holidays, New Year’s Day included, when the Mercado da Penteada opens 07:00 to 13:00 instead. Children of 12 and under walk onto the Cabo Girão skywalk free.

Madeira in January: a two-day itinerary

Day one suits a weekday in Funchal and Monte. Take the cable car at its 08:45 opening, 37 minutes after sunrise, one way for EUR 16 if you plan to sledge down. Walk into Monte Palace at 09:00 and give the museum its turn before noon. Around 11:30, ride the sledge if the ground is dry. After lunch in town, join Blandy’s 15:00 English tour, back out by 15:45. Then head west for the 18:25 sunset on the Cabo Girão skywalk, open until 19:00.

On day two, book a SIMplifica slot for the first hour after sunrise. PR1, from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, runs 6.1 km in about 3 hours, and past the Pedra Rija viewpoint it runs one way only, so arrange transport from the far end. It was open on September 8, 2026, but status changes with weather and works, so check the evening before. If the morning looks doubtful, the out-and-back to Pedra Rija costs EUR 4.50. If rain sets in, switch to the Botanical Garden and, before 14:00 on a Saturday, the Mercado dos Lavradores.

Madeira in January vs December and February

Funchal’s afternoons cool by only 2.0°F across the three months, from a 69.8°F December high to 68.0°F in January and 67.8°F in February. Rain shifts more. December records 3.73 inches over 8.6 wet days, January 2.64 inches over 6.2, and February 2.85 inches over 5.5, so February has fewer wet days but slightly more water than January. The sea runs 70.3°F, 68.6°F and 67.2°F, a 3.1°F drop in all. The neighboring months come from the same sources and periods as January’s figures.

Moving four weeks earlier gets you water 1.7°F warmer and highs 1.8°F warmer, at the cost of 2.4 more wet days and Christmas Day closures at the cable car and Monte Palace, with no Aerobus service. Moving four weeks later trims 0.7 of a wet day and adds three cruise calls (44 against 41 in 2026), while the sea drops 1.4°F. Is January a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, for walkers ready to book slots, garden and wine lovers, and anyone happy with 68°F afternoons and a short swim. A trip built around Funchal, Monte and two or three mountain mornings fits the month well. A beach week fits less well, and so does a schedule that cannot absorb rain: at 6.2 wet days in 31, a week-long stay averages more than one.

If rain is the worry, February has the fewest wet days of the three, 5.5, with highs just 0.2°F below January’s. If sea warmth is the sticking point, none of the three winter months moves the water much, and the best time to visit Portugal points to the warmer stretch of the year.

Of the three winter months, January alone keeps the sea within 2°F of December’s 70.3°F while shedding 2.4 wet days and every Christmas Day closure.

If your flight lands late, the Aerobus runs from the airport until 22:00 and takes 50 minutes to Praia Formosa through central Funchal. We could not find its fare printed by the regional government, so call the operator on 291 201 151 before you count on paying cash.
