You step out of the arrivals hall at Belize’s only international airport, in the village of Ladyville, and the warm, damp air of the Caribbean coast settles on you. Ahead lies a road west, toward the Macal River, the Maya ruins and the caves of the Cayo District. San Ignacio is where many travelers are heading, and the question in front of you is how to get there from the runway.

How do you get from the airport to Belize City?
The ways the airport itself puts in front of you are car rental counters and a travel agency based on site, and from there the drive to Belize City takes about 30 minutes. The airport sits northwest of the city center, in Ladyville, and the road you take first leads toward the city before you turn west for San Ignacio.
San Ignacio lies on the banks of the Macal River in western Belize, about 63 miles west of Belize City and about 22 miles west of Belmopan, the capital. That is the full distance to keep in mind, and it starts from the city, not from the terminal door.
What decides your choice is mostly the hour you land and how much you carry. The airport opens in the morning and closes in the early evening, and driving at night is strongly discouraged in Belize, so a late arrival shapes the day more than anything else.
A group with several bags will think about space. A solo traveler with one pack will think about simplicity. Someone planning to roam between ruins, caves and waterfalls around San Ignacio will think about having their own wheels.
Belize City itself was the capital until the government moved to Belmopan in 1970, and it is still the largest city in the country. Most travelers pass through it quickly on the way to the cayes or the Cayo District, but its position at the mouth of Haulover Creek, on the coast, explains why every road west begins here.
Your options from the airport
Rental cars at the airport
Two rental companies are based at the airport: Hertz/Safari Belize and Crystal Auto Rental. You can reach Hertz/Safari Belize at +(501) 225-3300, and Crystal Auto Rental at +(501) 223-1600 or by email at [email protected]. Having a car means your own schedule between the airport and San Ignacio, and then between the town and its sites.
Drivers in Belize keep to the right side of the road. Road conditions range from two-lane paved roads to dirt or gravel tracks, and roadside assistance is frequently unavailable. A valid U.S. or international driver’s permit is accepted for three months after you first enter the country.
Because night driving is strongly discouraged, the sensible plan for a car is to collect it while there is daylight left for the road west. If your flight lands late, think about where you will spend the first night before you commit to the highway.
The travel agency at the airport
All in One Travel Service is a travel agency located at the airport. It can be reached at +(501) 225-2016 or +(501) 620-2267, and by email at [email protected] or [email protected].
It suits a traveler who prefers to talk to a person about an onward plan rather than sort it out alone on arrival. Writing ahead from home, with your flight and your destination in San Ignacio, gives you something concrete to discuss.
Roadwork on the airport access road
Roadwork and dredging are underway on the access road to the airport, which means slower traffic and uneven surfaces. Drivers are asked to reduce speed and follow the flaggers in the work zone, and to watch for dredging equipment and workers near the roadway.
Whatever way you leave the terminal, this stretch is the first thing you meet. Leaving extra time for airport trips is the advice that goes with it, and it applies in both directions, when you arrive and when you come back for a flight home.

| Crystal Auto Rental | Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport | +(501) 223-1600, [email protected] |

A rental car gives freedom once you are in Cayo, where the sights are spread along the Macal valley and out toward the ruins of Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and El Pilar. It also asks more of you: right-side driving on roads that vary from paved to gravel, no promise of roadside help, and a firm discouragement of night driving.
The travel agency route puts the planning in someone else’s hands before you land, which matters if you would rather not decide at the curb. Neither choice changes the geography. San Ignacio is about 63 miles from Belize City, and your arrival time decides how comfortable that distance feels.
If San Ignacio is your base for several days, the car earns its place, since the caves and ruins around town lie in different directions. If you are only there to sleep between tours, the question becomes which part of the journey you want to handle yourself.
Arriving at the airport
The airport is called Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, and it is the only international airport in Belize. It has two terminals. Terminal 1 handles COPA, Sun Country, Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos (TAG), Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. Terminal 2 handles Air Canada, Alaska Air, American, Delta, Southwest, United and Westjet. Check-in counters for all airlines are in these two terminals.
The airport’s daily hours run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and services beyond normal hours are available upon request. That is worth knowing because the drive west to San Ignacio begins after you land, and daylight is what makes it comfortable. The runway itself is 9,900 feet long, built for the jets that bring visitors from the U.S. and Canada.
Items left or found in the Terminal Building are turned over to the Security Office in Terminal 1 and kept for 60 days before being donated or destroyed. If you leave something on the way out, that is where it will be.
On the return trip, passengers departing are expected to arrive at least 3 hours before the scheduled flight, and the airport encourages 3 to 4 hours. TSA PreCheck is not available at this airport, so plan for the ordinary lines. Since San Ignacio is a long way west of the airport, build that return drive into your last day.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months can meet a tropical system, on the coast and farther inland. Airport charges are fixed in U.S. dollars, and the ones below are the amounts the airport lists. Parking applies if you leave a car at the airport.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Passenger Service Fee | US$53.50 |
| Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) Fee | US$20.00 |
| Parking, per day | US$2.00 |
| Overnight parking | US$9.00 |
