Belize Airport to Placencia: Domestic Flights, Rental Cars and the Road Out of Ladyville

Step out of the terminal at Ladyville and the first thing you notice is the warm, damp air and the drone of small propeller planes lining up on the tarmac. Some travelers head for the road into Belize City, others walk toward the little aircraft that hop down the coast.

How do you get from the airport to Belize City?

Belize City is the largest city in the country, set on a small peninsula that pushes into the Caribbean, at the mouth of Haulover Creek.

What decides the way you go is mostly where you are sleeping that night. If your hotel is on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, Belize City is simply the gateway.

If you are headed to Placencia, the city can be skipped altogether, because Maya Island Air and Tropic Air both operate from Terminal 1, and Placencia has its own airport at the south end of the peninsula. A flight spares you the driving, and a rental car gives you the freedom to stop where you like.

Luggage and group size matter too. A couple with two bags has an easy time of it, while a family with surfboards or dive gear may prefer the flexibility of a car.

Roadwork and dredging are underway on the airport access road, which means slower traffic and uneven surfaces, so leave extra time whenever you drive to or from the terminal. Drivers are asked to slow down, follow the flaggers and watch for dredging equipment and workers near the roadway.

Your options from the airport

A domestic flight to Placencia

Maya Island Air flies to Placencia in about forty minutes, and its counters are in Terminal 1, along with Tropic Air. You land at Placencia Airport on the southern end of the peninsula, a long, narrow strip of sand between the lagoon and the sea. The flight follows the coast, so on a clear day you may see the cayes and the reef as you go.

This option suits travelers who would rather spend the time on the beach than behind a windshield. From the airstrip you are close to the village of Placencia, where the main street has been recorded by Guinness as the narrowest in the world. Contact the airline directly to arrange your seat.

A rental car at the airport

Two rental companies have a presence at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport: Hertz/Safari Belize, reached at +(501) 225 – 3300, and Crystal Auto Rental, reached at +(501) 223 – 1600 or by email at [email protected]. A car lets you set your own pace and turn the trip into a coastal road journey.

Along the peninsula you pass, from north to south, Riversdale, Maya Beach, the Garifuna village of Seine Bight and finally Placencia Village. With a car you can also reach Cockscomb Basin or the departure point for Monkey River. Because of the roadwork near the terminal, the first stretch of the drive can be slow, so follow the flaggers and ease off the accelerator.

Arranging a transfer through a travel agency

All in One Travel Service is a travel agency at the airport. You can reach it at +(501) 225 – 2016 or +(501) 620 – 2267, or by email at [email protected] or [email protected]. An agency is a useful contact if you want help putting together a plan rather than sorting out each leg yourself.

It suits visitors who like to have a person on the other end of a phone line, particularly those combining the airport, a night in the city and a flight to the south. Ask the agency about the specific legs you need.

Airport transfer options compared

Option Best for Time to town How to book
Domestic flight to Placencia Going straight to the peninsula without driving 40 minutes by air with Maya Island Air Directly with Maya Island Air or Tropic Air (Terminal 1)
Rental car Setting your own route and stops About 30 minutes by road to Belize City centre Hertz/Safari Belize at +(501) 225 – 3300, or Crystal Auto Rental at +(501) 223 – 1600 or [email protected]

The trade-off is between time and freedom. The flight takes you to Placencia itself and leaves the highway behind, but you are tied to the airline’s seats and your luggage. The rental car turns the journey into part of the vacation, with room for stops and detours, though you take on the roadwork zone by the terminal and the driving that follows.

For travelers who want the city first, the road to Belize City is the natural start. The city was the capital until the government moved to Belmopan in 1970, and it still feels like the country’s commercial hub.

If you plan to continue to the cayes or to the southern coast, you can arrange the next leg from there. If your whole trip is about the south, the flight keeps the day simple and puts you on the peninsula early.

A final consideration is the season you travel. Whale sharks arrive at Gladden Split, near Placencia, in April and May, and you can dive or snorkel with them there. Visitors who come for that spawning season often want to reach the water quickly, which makes the flight attractive. Visitors who want to take in Monkey River or the southern cayes at their own pace may prefer a car.

Arriving at the airport

The official name is Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, and it lies in Ladyville, in Belize District. It has two terminals. The check-in counters for all airlines are in Terminals 1 and 2, and the airlines are divided between them in a way that matters when you connect to a small plane.

Terminal 1 is home to COPA, Sun Country, Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos (TAG), Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. That means the two regional carriers that fly to the coast and the cayes share a building with the airlines that fly across Central America. Terminal 2 handles Air Canada, Alaska Air, American, Delta, Southwest, United and Westjet, so if you flew in from the United States or Canada you are likely to arrive in Terminal 2 and make your way to Terminal 1 for a domestic hop.

The airport opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m., and services beyond those hours are available on request. A long runway handles the jets, and the setting around it is flat, green and close to the coast. Anyone planning an early departure from Placencia, or a late arrival, should keep those opening hours in mind.

Items left or found in the terminal building are turned over to the Security Office in Terminal 1. If you leave a bag behind, that is where to ask. The airport does not offer TSA PreCheck, so U.S. travelers should not count on it when they fly home.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through the end of November, which means October still falls inside it, and travelers heading down the coast to Placencia should keep an eye on the forecast. The peninsula has lived through serious storms before, including Hurricane Iris in October 2001, which struck southern Belize.

If you drive from the airport, remember that the access road is under repair, so build in extra time. Departing passengers pay the following fees at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) Fee US$20.00 Departing passengers
Parking, per day US$2.00 Drivers who leave a car at the airport
