Bimini in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, the Sapona Wreck and a Two-Day Plan

By May the flats around Alice Town have gone a glassy turquoise, and the sound that carries along the single road is a mix of outboard motors, dock talk and music drifting from open bar doors. Boats come and go from the marinas all day, and the light stays long into the evening. May in Bimini is a month of warm water, longer days and an island that still feels small and unhurried.

What is the weather like in Bimini in May?

May is warm and getting warmer, with a sea that already feels like summer and days that stretch well into the evening.

Month Sea at Bimini (°F) Daylight on the 15th (hours and minutes)
April 79.3 12 h 49 min
May 83.6 13 h 27 min
June 85.9 13 h 47 min

In Nassau, highs average about 86°F in May, with lows in the low 70s, and rain falls on a handful of days. Think of the second half of spring in the islands: hot afternoons, soft evenings and showers that tend to be passing rather than all-day affairs.

The long daylight shapes the rhythm of a day. Mornings are the pleasant stretch for walking the length of North Bimini or heading out on the water, while the middle of the day suits a shaded table, a cold drink and a swim. Light lingers until well into the evening, so a late dinner on a dock or a terrace still comes with a sunset.

Pack for sun first: a hat, light cotton and something with sleeves for the boat. A thin layer is handy after dark, when a breeze off the water can feel cool after a hot day. The sea, a touch warmer than in April, is the real weather story here.

Can you swim in Bimini in May?

In May, yes, you can take a long swim, since the water is warm enough, the sort you enter right away, with no hesitation at the edge.

North Bimini is a narrow ribbon of land, with the open Atlantic along one edge and the lagoon side’s shallower, calmer-looking flats along the other. Beaches along the ocean shore have a different character from the sheltered side, and the sea can change from morning to afternoon with the wind. Conditions vary from day to day and from one stretch of shore to the next, so look at the water before you commit to a spot.

The wreck of the SS Sapona gives snorkelers plenty to ponder, with its upper portion above the surface and its lower half underwater. The warmer sea means a thin rash guard or nothing at all is often enough. Bring a mask, a snorkel and reef-friendly sunscreen, and a towel you do not mind leaving damp on a boat seat.

What to do in Bimini in May

May is a month for being on the water. The sea has warmed, the days are long, and the island’s character as a place where boats outnumber cars comes through. Fishing talk fills the docks, and the pace is slow in a way that suits a few days with no agenda.

Many visitors fly into South Bimini, but many others come by boat or ferry from Florida, which lies only 50 miles away. That closeness gives the island its easygoing, nautical feel. North Bimini is long, flat and narrow, so everything seems to sit within a stroll of the water.

Alice Town and the King’s Highway

Alice Town is where life happens, a run of bars, small restaurants and shops along one road. Spend an evening here and you will hear the island’s talk of the day’s catch, the boats and the weather. It is the best place to understand how Bimini works.

Go in late afternoon, when the heat eases, and walk the road end to end. Stop at a conch stand or a bar for a cold drink and stay for the sunset. The place suits anyone who enjoys people-watching more than sightseeing.

Snorkeling and diving the Sapona

The SS Sapona is a concrete ship that ran aground in 1926 during a hurricane. Steel was hard to come by in World War I, so it belonged to a group of concrete ships commissioned then, and once the war ended it took on a few strange jobs, including a turn as a casino and afterward a liquor warehouse in Prohibition. Today it is a favorite for divers and snorkelers.

Seen from a boat, the hull rises from the water with its top exposed and its lower half submerged. The wreck is off South Bimini, so you reach it by boat from the island. Go on a morning outing when the light is clear, and bring a mask and fins.

The Bimini Road

In the water off North Bimini’s western bluff sits the Bimini Road, a formation of square stone blocks arranged in straight lines. The formation stretches fifteen hundred feet, and some people link it to the legend of Atlantis. No matter what you think, it is a fine excuse to get out on the water when the day is calm and bright.

Seeing it means a boat trip, so it pairs naturally with a morning of snorkeling or fishing. The longer May days give you more daylight for being out.

Food leans on what comes out of the sea: conch in salads and fritters, grilled fish, rum drinks served in plastic cups on the dock. Pair it with Bahamian side dishes of peas and rice and macaroni, and you have the island’s table.

If the afternoon turns showery, wait it out under a bar’s roof. Rain here tends to arrive and move on, and the dock talk is better with a roof overhead anyway.

A two-day itinerary for Bimini in May

Day 1. Settle in and start slowly. Spend the morning on the beach or the dock, then eat a late lunch of conch at a casual spot in Alice Town. As the heat eases in the afternoon, walk the King’s Highway, then stay for a sunset drink and dinner at a waterside place. Daylight lasts well past the evening meal, so you can take it unhurried.

If a shower rolls in, shelter in a bar or restaurant, which is where Bimini does most of its socializing anyway. Day 2. Head out early by boat while the light is soft. Visit the Sapona for snorkeling or a look from the water, and ask about including the Bimini Road on the same outing. Be back for a long lunch and a swim off the beach, then spend the late afternoon resting before one more dinner in town.

Rain card: a wet day is for a long lunch, conversation with the locals and a slow wander between the shops of Alice Town.

Is Bimini busy in May?

In May, Bimini remains a tiny, laid-back island, but weekends can get busier than weekdays thanks to boats arriving from Florida.

Because the island is only 50 miles from Florida, the people on the docks are often anglers and boaters, with a mix of visitors who have flown in. The place never feels like a crowded resort. Rooms are limited on a narrow island, so the habit that serves best is booking early for any holiday weekend and a little later for ordinary weeks.

Restaurant tables are rarely a long hunt in a place this small, though popular spots fill when a fishing group is in town. If you want a boat outing to the Sapona, line it up as soon as you know your dates.

What to pack for Bimini in May

Pack light, sun-ready clothes and gear for the water.

  • Swimsuits and a rash guard, for long days in warm water.
  • A mask and snorkel, for the Sapona.
  • A wide-brimmed hat and strong sunscreen, since daylight runs long.
  • A light layer for breezy evenings on the dock.
  • Sandals that dry quickly, for boat decks and beach walks.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

May sits just before the Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1 and runs to November 30. For entry, U.S. citizens need a valid passport and a return or onward ticket, and visitors may be asked to show they can support themselves. Flights come into South Bimini Airport and North Bimini Airport, and visitors from South Bimini cross to North Bimini by ferry.

Bimini in May vs April and June

Going in April means a cooler sea and shorter days. It suits those who like fresher air and water that takes a moment to get used to. May is the step into proper swimming weather.

June brings the warmest water of the three and the longest days, along with the start of the hurricane season. It suits people who want the sea as warm as bathwater and do not mind a more showery pattern, since rain days rise in Nassau as June arrives. Pick April for milder days, May for the balance of warm water and fewer showers, and June for the hottest swimming and the longest evenings.

Is May a good time to visit Bimini?

If you like bathlike seas, plenty of daylight and a laid back island where boats set the rhythm, then May suits you well.

It suits snorkelers, anglers, couples and travelers who like to wander a single road and talk to whoever is at the next table. It suits less well anyone who wants nightlife on a large scale or a resort’s list of activities. On arrival, sort out your boat outing first, then let the rest fall into place. What makes May special here is the sea: warm enough to stay in, with the Sapona rising from it and daylight lasting until the dock lights come on.
