The Bahamas in April: Weather, Sea Temperatures, the Family Island Regatta and Where to Go

In late April, the harbor at George Town fills with the tall white sails of Bahamian-built sloops, and the shore turns into a street party of rake ‘n’ scrape music, fried fish and conch salad. Out on the water the days are long and the sun is strong.

Spring is also the stretch before the rains and the summer heat take over. April in the Bahamas suits couples, families and boaters who want warm sea, bright light and a calendar full of island gatherings.

What is the weather like in the Bahamas in April?

In Nassau, April is warm and bright, with afternoons in the mid-80s, soft evenings and only a handful of days with rain. The sea around the islands has climbed into the high 70s and low 80s, depending on where you stand.

Month Nassau average high (°F) Nassau average low (°F) Nassau rain days Sea at Nassau (°F) Sea at the Exumas (°F) Sea at Grand Bahama (°F) Sea at Bimini (°F)
March 81.3 66.0 4.5 77.5 78.9 77.6 78.6
April 83.7 69.1 5.8 78.7 80.0 78.2 79.3
May 86.5 72.0 7.5 82.6 83.6 81.7 83.6

In Nassau, the days feel like early summer without the full weight of it. Mornings are pleasant for a walk through town, midday sun is strong, and the nights are mild enough to eat outside. Rain, when it comes, usually arrives as a passing shower, and the month totals only about two and a half inches. Daylight stretches past twelve and a half hours, which leaves long evenings for a late dinner on the water.

The sea changes more from island to island than the air does. Around George Town in the Exumas the water is the warmest of the four places in the table, and Bimini follows close behind.

Nassau sits in the middle, and the waters off Freeport and Lucaya on Grand Bahama are the coolest of the group, though still pleasant by American standards. Compared with March, every one of them has gained a degree or more, and May brings a bigger jump still.

Where to go in the Bahamas in April

The Bahamas is an archipelago, and each island has its own mood this month. Some are busy with festivals and harbors full of boats, others are quiet stretches of sand and mangrove.

Nassau and Paradise Island

Nassau, on New Providence, is the capital and the place where most trips begin. April is a good month for the old town, where pastel buildings, the market stalls and the harbor front reward a slow morning. The Pompey Museum, once called Vendue House, was built before 1769 and became a museum in 1992. It tells the story of slavery and emancipation in the islands.

For something green, the Retreat Gardens on New Providence is an 11-acre property with one of the largest private collections of rare and exotic palms in the world. It holds approximately 170 species. Cable Beach and Paradise Island, a separate island with its resorts, fill the rest of the days with sand and pool time.

The Exumas

The Exumas are a long chain of cays strung out over shallow, clear water, and in April the sea there is the warmest of our four reference places. The Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, the first marine reserve of its kind, has protected some of the most stunning stretches of the islands since 1958. Boats anchor in its sheltered bays, and the colors of the water change by the hour.

At Compass Cay Marina, visitors can swim with nurse sharks, and they can also snorkel the beaches and nearby reefs. George Town, on Great Exuma, is the center of the island’s social life, and it becomes the stage for the regatta at the end of the month. Staniel Cay, farther along the chain, is a quieter base for days spent on a boat.

The Abacos

The Abacos are made for boating. The chain has 17 marinas sprinkled throughout, so island hopping from one harbor to the next is how many people see it. Hope Town on Elbow Cay, with its red-and-white striped lighthouse, and Green Turtle Cay, with its wooden cottages and slow lanes, are two of the harbors people look for.

Divers know the Catacombs, near Green Turtle Cay, as a top dive site in the Abacos, with coral, turtles, tropical fish and eagle rays at a depth of 40 feet. Marsh Harbour is the largest town of the chain and a base for supplies and ferries to the cays.

Grand Bahama and Bimini

Grand Bahama has Freeport and Lucaya, where the waterfront at Port Lucaya brings together restaurants, shops and live music in the evening. In April the sea off Freeport and Lucaya is a little cooler than at the other three places in the table, which many people will find refreshing on a sunny afternoon.

Bimini, closest of the islands to Florida in spirit as well as in name recognition, centers on Alice Town, a strip of bars, docks and fishing boats. The sea there is a touch warmer than at Nassau. Bimini’s fishing culture is the reason many visitors come, and April brings the start of the warm-water season on the docks.

What to do in the Bahamas in April

Spring is a month of boats, music and food in the open air, with the Easter weekend and the Family Island Regatta as the two big moments.

Easter weekend and the Family Island Regatta

Easter moves every year, so when it falls in April the islands take on a family mood. Churches fill on Sunday morning, beaches host picnics and cookouts, and many Bahamians travel to relatives on other islands.

The Family Island Regatta in George Town is usually held in late April. Traditional Bahamian-built sloops race across Elizabeth Harbour, crews lean far out over the side to keep the boats upright, and the shore fills with food stands, music and dancing. Even a visitor who knows nothing about sailing is drawn in by the noise and the color.

What to eat

Conch is the national taste. Conch salad is made on the spot with diced raw conch, onion, pepper, tomato and citrus juice, and it is eaten at stands by the water. Cracked conch is pounded, battered and fried, and conch fritters arrive hot in a paper basket.

Around them you will find grilled or steamed fish with peas and rice, johnnycake, a dense sweet bread, and guava duff, a rolled pastry served with a warm sauce. Fish fry spots in Nassau and along the other islands are lively on weekend evenings, with music in the background.

On and under the water

The sea has warmed enough in April for long days of snorkeling and diving. The Catacombs near Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos draws divers, and the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park and Compass Cay are where boat trips go. Turtles and rays are sometimes seen, but wildlife is never guaranteed.

On land, the Retreat Gardens give a shaded break from the midday sun in Nassau, and the Pompey Museum is a quiet indoor stop in town. A day with a few clouds is a good one for either.

Is the Bahamas busy in April?

April is lively, with the energy of spring vacation and Easter, but the islands are large enough that the mood differs from one to the next.

Nassau and Paradise Island see a steady flow of families and couples, and the town center and the waterfront have a busy feel on days when ships are in port. Cable Beach and the resort areas carry a holiday air, especially around Easter and school breaks. Grand Bahama has its own flow of visitors at Port Lucaya, with the evening crowd gathering around the bars and music.

The Exumas change character as the regatta approaches. George Town becomes crowded with boats and spectators, and the harbor turns into a floating town. Away from it, the cays of the chain stay quiet and are best seen from a boat. The Abacos are a favorite of the boating crowd, and the harbors of Hope Town and Green Turtle Cay have an easygoing spring rhythm.

If you prefer calm, aim for the days away from Easter and the regatta, and consider the smaller islands such as Bimini outside its fishing weekends. Mornings are quieter than afternoons almost everywhere, and the long daylight gives plenty of room to choose your hour.

What to pack for the Bahamas in April

Packing is simple because the weather is steady, with warm days and mild evenings in Nassau. On boats and on the open water of the Exumas and Abacos, the breeze and the spray make a light extra layer welcome, while a day in town calls for the lightest clothes you own. Sun protection matters more than rain gear this month.

  • Lightweight cotton or linen clothes for hot afternoons and warm evenings.
  • A light long-sleeved shirt or windbreaker for boat rides and breezy docks.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen for the strong spring sun.
  • Swimsuits and a snorkel mask if you like your own gear, since the sea has warmed up.
  • Sturdy sandals or water shoes for docks, rocky shores and boat landings.
  • A small compact umbrella or light rain jacket for the occasional passing shower.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

April falls before the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, so the month is outside the official hurricane season. U.S. citizens arriving by air need a passport valid for at least six months, according to the Bahamas Department of Immigration, and passport cards are not accepted. They do not need a Bahamian visa for a visit as a bona fide visitor of up to eight months.

A return or onward ticket is required, proof of funds may be requested, and travelers complete the Immigration Disembarkation/Embarkation Card. U.S. citizens must also present proof of anticipated departure. Marijuana is illegal in the Bahamas, and the penalties are strict.

Is April a good time to visit the Bahamas?

Yes, April is a very good time for almost any island, and especially for the Exumas and the Abacos if your plans center on boats, water and harbors.

Compared with March, April feels clearly more like summer. Nassau’s afternoons are a couple of degrees warmer, the nights are softer, and the sea at all four places in the table has gained a degree or more. Days are also longer by about three quarters of an hour, which leaves more time for beaches and boat trips.

May goes further. The air is hotter in Nassau, the sea has jumped by several degrees at every reference point, and the number of rain days rises. That suits people who want the warmest water, but anyone who prefers dry, bright days with milder heat will find April more balanced.

For a town-and-beach trip, Nassau and Paradise Island give warm days, gardens, the old town and a full dining scene. Divers will look to the Abacos, and families will like the sheltered cays of the Exumas. Grand Bahama and Bimini round out the list for those who want something different from the capital. What sets April apart is the sound of the Family Island Regatta in George Town, when the working sloops of the islands race across Elizabeth Harbour and the whole shoreline cheers them on.
