Every air figure here comes from the Las Gaviotas weather station (SMN 18021), about 19 miles east across Bahia de Banderas, the nearest official normals for this stretch of coast. Sayulita’s beach town is not measured separately, so read the numbers as the regional climate and expect the spot itself to differ. Sea temperatures come from a different source and period: the Open-Meteo Marine API, 2015-2024.

Sayulita weather in October

The Servicio Meteorologico Nacional, Mexico’s national weather service, publishes 1991-2020 normals for the Las Gaviotas station. For October they read an average high of 95.2°F, an average low of 72.0°F and 7.20 inches of precipitation. It is an official thermometer, standing across the bay rather than on Sayulita’s sand.

SMN counts 11.8 days of measurable rain in an average October, a little more than one day in three. The station sheet does not publish the threshold for a rain day, so treat 11.8 as SMN’s own tally and not as a US-style count. The normals also say nothing about the hour rain falls, so keep the outdoor plan you care most about (a boat trip, a surf lesson) as a flexible slot on two different days.

The average afternoon reaches 95.2°F and the average night bottoms out at 72.0°F, a swing of 23.2 degrees. Days are hot and nights stay warm, so pack for heat: light fabrics, sun protection and a thin rain shell. A sweater stays home.

At 87.6°F the water feels like a bath, and most people will skip a wetsuit for a swim or a beginner surf lesson. September was warmer at 89.0°F and November drops to 82.9°F, so October sits mid-slide: the sea is cooling but still an easy swim.

Things to do in Sayulita in October

October pairs a sea at 87.6°F with a rain count that has already fallen from September’s 22.1 days to 11.8. That suits the town beach: a well-known beginner-friendly surf break, where at that water temperature a lesson is a long swim with a board. The point break and river-mouth beaches nearby draw more experienced surfers.

Sayulita sits on the same stretch of coast as the boat departures for Islas Marietas National Park. Its Playa del Amor charges a 125-peso CONANP entrance fee and opens Wednesday through Sunday, so Monday and Tuesday are off the table. SECTUR also lists a sea-turtle camp, Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita, among the town’s official attractions. We could not verify its October schedule, so call ahead. We also have no tour-boat price list.

The sea off these places reads 87.6°F now against 82.9°F in November (Open-Meteo Marine API), so the water cools next month. The air barely moves, with October highs of 95.2°F and November highs of 94.3°F. What separates the two months is the nights (72.0°F now, 66.4°F in November) and the rain.

Sayulita itinerary for October

Day one, town and beach. Be on the sand at first light, just before seven, while the air is still short of its 95.2°F afternoon high: a beginner surf lesson or a swim in 87.6°F water. Have breakfast in the shade mid-morning. In the hottest hours, stay in the water or in a room with air conditioning. Save the walk through town for the last stretch of daylight, since sunset comes before seven.

Day two, Playa del Amor. Pick a Wednesday-to-Sunday date and the earliest boat slot: the park opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Get the operator’s boat price before committing, because we could not verify one. If the sky turns, swap the day with another open one, and use the rainy stretch for the turtle camp after a phone call to confirm hours.

Sayulita in October vs September and November

Rain is what moves. September brings measurable rain on roughly three days in four, October on a little more than one in three, November on fewer than one in ten. Afternoon highs stay within 0.9 degrees of each other across all three months. The change is at night, where the low slips from 73.6°F to 72.0°F to 66.4°F.

Yes for anyone who wants a warm sea and can live with rain on roughly one day in three, with highs of 95.2°F. No for anyone who needs a dry week. The U.S. State Department rates Nayarit at Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution’, and that advisory is worth reading before you book.
