Sayulita was a handful of palm-thatched coconut-farming houses until the late 1960s. SECTUR named it a Pueblo Mágico on December 3, 2015 and renewed the designation in August 2021.

Sayulita weather in July

Every figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service, the Servicio Meteorologico Nacional, and its 1991-2020 normals for station 18021 at Las Gaviotas. That is a real thermometer, but it stands about 19 miles east across Bahia de Banderas, the nearest official normals for this stretch of coast. Sayulita’s beach town is not measured separately, so read the numbers as the regional climate rather than a reading taken on the sand. July averages a high of 95.0°F and a low of 73.2°F, with 14.33 inches of precipitation.

The weather service counts 20.4 days of measurable rain in an average July, roughly two days out of every three. Rain is the default in this month, so a dry day is the exception. The sheet we read does not publish SMN’s threshold for a rain day, so we do not line the count up against U.S. figures, and we found nothing on what hour the rain tends to fall. Give every outdoor plan a covered fallback.

The gap between the afternoon high and the night low is 21.8 degrees, yet the low of 73.2°F means evenings stay warm. Pack quick-drying clothes, a light rain layer, sandals that survive a wet street and one pair of closed shoes. A sweater has little to do here.

Sea surface off Sayulita averages 86.4°F in July, from the Open-Meteo Marine API’s 2015-2024 record. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.

At 86.4°F the water is 13.2 degrees warmer than an average July night and only 8.6 degrees under the afternoon high. You walk in without a gasp, and it cools you less than you might hope on a 95.0°F day. It is also 2.6 degrees warmer than June’s 83.8°F.

How busy is Sayulita in July? Crowds and prices

July sits in the wet stretch of the calendar, with 7.52 inches in June, 14.33 in July and 16.18 in August. We found no occupancy series and no month-by-month hotel rates for Sayulita, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. The rain is what we can place, not the price.

We found no booking lead-time data, so we give no number of weeks. With rain on 20.4 days as the norm, choose rooms with free cancellation and price the exact week you want. The one fixed schedule in the month is Islas Marietas, open Wednesday through Sunday, so settle that day before the rest.

Nayarit sets its lodging tax (Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje) at 5% under Article 62 of the state’s Ley de Hacienda, and the 2026 Ley de Ingresos confirms it. We could not verify whether the nightly rates on booking sites include it, so ask before you compare two quotes.

The one line where paying more changes the month is air conditioning. Nights hold at 73.2°F and afternoons reach 95.0°F, and a room that cannot shed that heat turns a wet day indoors into a long one. Ask for it in writing when you book.

Things to do in Sayulita in July

July water is 86.4°F, 2.6 degrees warmer than June’s, so swimming and a first surf lesson are easy on the body. Days last 13 hours 19 minutes on July 15, which leaves a long window to fit a beach session between showers. The month suits people who like being in the water more than out of it.

Playa del Amor, in Islas Marietas National Park, charges a 125-peso CONANP entrance fee and opens Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Boats leave from the same stretch of coast as Sayulita, and we could not verify fares or departure times, so ask the operator. In town, the beach is a well-known beginner surf break, while the point break and river-mouth beaches nearby draw stronger surfers. SECTUR also lists the Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita sea-turtle camp among the official attractions, and we could not verify its July schedule.

July changes the air, not the sea. The hours we read are Wednesday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the opening slot meets an average low of 73.2°F that warms toward a 95.0°F high. The early hours are the cool ones, and that is when the boat is worth taking.

We found no fee schedule for the town beach, so we call nothing free by fact, and Playa del Amor’s 125 pesos is the only price in our sources. Walking the streets of a town that was a few palm-thatched houses until the late 1960s needs no ticket that we know of.

Sayulita itinerary for July

Day one, a Wednesday to Sunday. Be up near sunrise at 6:28 a.m., eat early and book a boat to Islas Marietas so you reach Playa del Amor when it opens at 8:00 a.m. Pay the 125 pesos, swim in the cool of the morning and head back before the afternoon peaks at 95.0°F. Take a long lunch out of the sun, swim the town beach in 86.4°F water and be on the sand before sunset at 7:47 p.m.

Day two. Put the beginner surf lesson first thing at the town beach, call the turtle camp to ask about a visit and keep the afternoon loose. If your dates fall on a Monday or Tuesday, Marietas is closed, so this becomes your beach day. If the sky turns, use the gap between showers for the water and the wet hours for lunch and a walk through town.

Sayulita in July vs June and August

July’s high sits 1.4 degrees under June’s and 0.2 degrees above August’s, and the lows barely move around 73.2°F. Rain separates the months: July’s 14.33 inches is 6.81 inches more than June and 1.85 inches less than August’s 16.18. Rain days go from 11.5 to 20.4 to 23.5, and the sea from 83.8°F to 86.4°F to 88.8°F. Air and night temperatures come from the SMN station, the sea from the marine API.

Is July a good time to visit Sayulita?

Yes for swimmers, beginner surfers and anyone who can rearrange a day around 20.4 rain days. No for a fixed dry-weather trip, such as a photo shoot or a wedding outdoors. Nayarit carries a Level 2, ‘Exercise increased caution,’ in the U.S. State Department’s Mexico advisory, read September 29, 2026, so check it before you book.

If the answer is no, choose June: 7.52 inches of rain and 11.5 rain days against July’s 14.33 inches and 20.4, with highs of 96.4°F and a sea still at 83.8°F.

Among the three months, July is the one that pairs a sea warmer than June’s with fewer rain days than August’s.

The last word

Highs run 96.4°F, 95.0°F and 94.8°F from June to August, so rain is the real decision. If July is your only window, fix your Islas Marietas day first, Wednesday to Sunday, and carry the 125 pesos. SECTUR’s calendar for Sayulita lists no July event. The nearest dated ones are the shore fishing tournament on May 25-26 and the Surf Open Sayulita on November 22, and dates can shift from year to year.
