Sayulita was a handful of palm-thatched coconut-farming houses until the late 1960s. Today it is a Pueblo Mágico (named December 3, 2015, renewed in August 2021), a surf town of walkable streets and a beach where beginners and old hands share the same water. June is when the rains arrive: 7.52 inches, against 0.24 in May.

Sayulita weather in June

Every figure here for the air comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA): the 1991-2020 normals for station 18021, Las Gaviotas. That thermometer stands about 19 miles east across Bahia de Banderas, the nearest official normals for this stretch of coast. Read them as the regional climate, not a reading taken on Sayulita’s sand. June averages a high of 96.4°F, a low of 73.4°F and 7.52 inches of precipitation.

SMN counts 11.5 days of measurable rain in an average June, roughly one day in three. Plan each day with a wet slot in it: keep the boat trip and the surf lesson flexible, and leave one afternoon empty. SMN does not publish its rain threshold and its count does not say what time of day the rain falls, so a wet day could be a shower or a soaking.

Afternoons reach 96.4°F and nights bottom out at 73.4°F, a spread of 23.0 degrees. Nights stay warm (May’s average low is 66.4°F), so the bag stays thin: light cotton, two swimsuits, sandals, sun protection and a rain shell. No sweater is needed after dark.

Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off Sayulita at 83.8°F in June, averaged over 2015-2024. That is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour average. Sea-temperature tables built on 24-hour means will read a little lower.

Yes, you can swim, and comfortably. The water sits 12.6 degrees below a 96.4°F afternoon, cool enough to work as air conditioning and warm enough that a surf lesson at the town beach needs no wetsuit. May’s sea is 3.1 degrees cooler at 80.7°F.

We found no wind or swell series for June, so we cannot say how big the waves run that month. The layout is known: the town beach is a beginner-friendly break, while the point break and the river-mouth beaches nearby draw more experienced surfers. Ask the surf school that morning about conditions.

How busy is Sayulita in June? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Sayulita, so we crown no month cheap and none crowded. The calendar does say something: SECTUR lists Festival Sayulita (January 30-February 3), a shore fishing tournament (May 25-26), Dia de Muertos (November 1-2), the Surf Open (November 22) and the Guadalupe fiestas (December 1-12). It lists nothing in June, and some dates can shift from year to year.

We have no booking-lead data, so no number of weeks appears here. SECTUR names Puerto Vallarta International Airport and Tepic International (TPQ), about an hour east of the coast, as the two air gateways. With 11.5 rain days on average, take free-cancellation lodging if you can. Leave the Marietas day loose until the forecast is clear, since the park opens Wednesday through Sunday only.

Nayarit sets its lodging tax (Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje) at 5% under Article 62 of the state’s Ley de Hacienda. We could not verify whether a given property quotes its nightly rate with the tax or without it, so ask at booking.

With lows of 73.4°F and wet days on the calendar, the money that changes June goes into the room: air-conditioning for the nights and a covered terrace or indoor space for the rainy hours.

Things to do in Sayulita in June

June suits a swim in water that has climbed 3.1 degrees since May, from 80.7°F to 83.8°F. It also opens the rainy stretch, so beach hours need a backup: a long lunch or a wander through town. The shore fishing tournament (May 25-26) has passed by then, and the Surf Open (November 22) is still months away.

Start with the town beach, a well-known beginner-friendly surf break, and the point break and river-mouth beaches nearby for stronger surfers. For a boat day, Islas Marietas National Park departs from the same stretch of coast: Playa del Amor charges a 125-peso CONANP entrance fee and opens Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That fee is the park’s alone. We could not verify boat-operator prices, so none appears.

What June changes at these places is the air and the sky. Afternoons average 96.4°F and 11.5 days bring measurable rain, so both the Marietas boats and the town beach need a fallback plan. The CONANP listing we read carried no June closure or seasonal note, but confirm the day before you go.

We could not verify which attractions are free in June, so we name none. One more name for the day sheet: SECTUR lists the Campamento Tortuguero Sayulita, a sea-turtle camp, among the town’s official attractions. We found no hours, fees or season dates for it, so ask locally.

Sayulita itinerary for June

Day one follows a 6:19 a.m. sunrise and 96.4°F afternoons. Take the town beach at first light for a surf lesson or a swim, while the air is still near its 73.4°F low. Eat breakfast in town, then spend the hottest hours indoors or in the water. Return to the sand in the late afternoon and stay for the 7:45 p.m. sunset.

Day two goes on a Wednesday-to-Sunday date, so the Playa del Amor trip (125 pesos, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) is possible. If the sky turns, swap it with the town wander and long lunch, and try the boats on the next open day. With 11.5 rain days on average, a spare open day in the schedule saves the trip.

Sayulita in June vs May and July

June’s 96.4°F afternoons sit between May’s 97.0°F and July’s 95.0°F, so highs barely change. Nights and water move: lows go from 66.4°F to 73.4°F to 73.2°F, and the sea from 80.7°F to 83.8°F to 86.4°F. Rain does the real work: 0.24, 7.52 and 14.33 inches, over 0.9, 11.5 and 20.4 rain days (SMN normals, 1991-2020).

Moving four weeks earlier, into May, buys a nearly dry month (0.9 rain days) with nights 7.0 degrees cooler and water 3.1 degrees cooler. Moving four weeks later, into July, adds 2.6 degrees to the sea, leaves nights 0.2 degrees cooler and nearly doubles the rain, with 20.4 wet days against 11.5.

Is June a good time to visit Sayulita?

June suits travelers who can shuffle a day: a swim at 83.8°F, a lesson at the town beach, a boat trip on a clear morning. It suits them less if a dry beach week is the whole plan, because SMN counts 11.5 rain days and 7.52 inches.

For a dry week, choose May: 0.9 days of measurable rain and 0.24 inches, with lows of 66.4°F and a sea of 80.7°F. Late May also has the shore fishing tournament (May 25-26). Skip July unless rain does not bother you, since it brings 20.4 rain days.

June keeps July’s warm nights (73.4°F against 73.2°F) with roughly half of its rain (7.52 inches against 14.33).
