July on Isla Mujeres brings an 86.1°F sea, a 94.6°F average afternoon and a short ferry ride off Cancun to reach both. It is also a month inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and runs to November 30.

Ultramar ferries reach Isla Mujeres at the Terminal Maritima APIQROO, sailing from three Cancun departure points: Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas at kilometer 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan, and Playa Caracol at kilometer 9.5. Passengers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure. We did not read a July timetable, so check Ultramar for sailing times.

Isla Mujeres weather in July

Every figure here comes from Mexico’s national weather service (SMN, part of CONAGUA): 1991-2020 normals at its Cancun station, number 23155, on the mainland about 8 miles across the channel. No station on the island itself has published normals, so this is the nearest official thermometer. July averages a high of 94.6°F and a low of 77.0°F, with 2.64 inches of precipitation.

Measurable rain falls on 9.2 days in an average July, roughly one day in three. The SMN sheet does not publish its threshold for a rain day, so some of those days may be a brief shower. Keep the morning for anything outdoors and treat a wet afternoon as a reason to move indoors, not to cancel the day.

The gap between the average high and the average low is 17.6 degrees, but the low itself stays at 77.0°F, so nights bring no chill. Pack breathable layers, a hat, sunscreen and a light rain shell. Skip the sweater.

Daylight lasts about 13 hours 20 minutes on July 15. Sunrise comes around 6:12 a.m. and sunset around 7:33 p.m., local Cancun time. The last swim of the day has to happen before that sunset.

Can you swim in Isla Mujeres in July? Sea temperature

The sea surface off Isla Mujeres averages 86.1°F in July, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would.

At 86.1°F the water is warm on entry, with no cold shock and no wetsuit needed. It sits 9.1 degrees above the average night air of 77.0°F, so a swim after dark feels warmer than the air around it.

We found no July wind or wave series for the island, so we give no swell figure. The one fixed feature is Playa Norte, the calmest beach, which faces the north tip where the current running along the east side breaks.

How busy is Isla Mujeres in July? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate series for Isla Mujeres, so we place July on no price ladder. The calendar fact is firmer: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. July falls inside that window, ahead of the peak.

Ultramar ferry tickets are valid for six months from purchase and are non-refundable, so buy them once your dates are fixed. We found no lead-time data for rooms, so we quote no number of weeks. Quintana Roo’s lodging tax, the Impuesto Sobre Hospedaje, is 5% of the billed accommodation value, or 6% when a host or booking platform collects payment for a short-term rental. Every foreign visitor entering the state also owes Visitax, 2.50 UMA, about 293 pesos at the UMA’s 2026 daily value. Check whether a quoted room rate already includes the lodging tax.

At a 77.0°F average low, a room with working air conditioning changes a July night more than any view does. The second item worth paying for is a flexible cancellation, given the storm window. We found no room prices to quote for either.

Things to do in Isla Mujeres in July

An 86.1°F sea and about 13 hours 20 minutes of daylight make July a month for plans built around the water: a beach morning, a snorkel, a boat trip. With a 94.6°F average high, put the exposed sights in the first hours after sunrise.

Playa Norte is the calm-water beach, at the north tip of the island. Punta Sur, at the southern tip, is a clifftop park with a sculpture garden and a lighthouse overlooking open water. Garrafon, a private reef park on the south end, is commonly sold as a snorkeling and activities day pass. Boat trips to Isla Contoy, a national park and bird sanctuary north of the island, are commonly sold from Isla Mujeres. Garrafon’s own site and CONANP’s page for Contoy did not load when we checked, so we state no admission price and no visitor limit.

The sea warms from 85.5°F in June to 86.1°F in July, so the snorkeling water barely changes with the month. The air does the changing, and Punta Sur is the place where 94.6°F feels biggest. Most visitors get around by golf cart, scooter or bicycle, and a bicycle ride to the south end is a morning job.

We verified no free-admission list for the island, so we name nothing as free. The main town is walkable, and a stroll through it needs no ticket.

Isla Mujeres itinerary for July

Day one, south end first. Be up for sunrise around 6:12 a.m. and ride to Punta Sur while the air is still under its 94.6°F average high: lighthouse, sculpture garden, the open water below. Spend midday in the water or somewhere with a roof. Give the late afternoon to the walkable main town, and finish the day before sunset at 7:33 p.m.

Day two, on the water. Book a snorkeling day at Garrafon or an Isla Contoy boat trip, and ask the operator about its cancellation terms, since we could not read either. Measurable rain falls on 9.2 days in an average July, so keep both days interchangeable. If rain sets in, move the water day to the clearer morning and spend the wet one in town.

Isla Mujeres in July vs June and August

July’s average high of 94.6°F sits 1.4 degrees above June’s 93.2°F and 0.6 degrees below August’s 95.2°F, while the average low barely moves. Rain separates the months more: 2.64 inches in July against 7.26 in June and 4.02 in August, on 9.2 rain days against 12.1 and 11.6. The air figures are SMN normals for 1991-2020. The sea figures come from the Open-Meteo Marine API for 2015-2024.

Moving four weeks earlier takes 1.4 degrees off the average high and cools the sea by 0.6 degrees, but adds 4.62 inches of rain over 2.9 more rain days. Moving four weeks later warms the sea by 0.9 degrees and adds 1.38 inches of rain over 2.4 more rain days. It also walks into mid-August, when the National Hurricane Center’s busiest stretch begins.

Is July a good time to visit Isla Mujeres?

Yes for swimmers who want 86.1°F water, who can take 94.6°F afternoons and 77.0°F nights, and who can shrug off a rain day. No for anyone who needs a fixed, non-refundable itinerary, or whose limit is heat. The U.S. State Department rates Quintana Roo Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” in its Mexico Travel Advisory reissued May 29, 2026.

If the storm window is the deal-breaker, the only calendar fix is a month outside June 1 to November 30, and our month-by-month guides are the place to compare them. If heat alone bothers you, June is 1.4 degrees cooler on the average high but carries 7.26 inches of rain.

Among June, July and August, July has the lowest rain total at 2.64 inches, with the sea already at 86.1°F.

The last word

July on Isla Mujeres comes down to one decision: whether a 94.6°F afternoon and a place inside the storm window are a fair price for an 86.1°F sea. If they are, book a room you can cancel and leave the ferry tickets until the dates are fixed.
