October in Venice is cool and mild. Afternoons reach 65°F (19°C) and nights drop to 51°F (11°C), so a sweater is enough by day and a jacket is welcome after dark.

Rain falls on seven days of the month, and the sun shines about five hours a day. Keep an umbrella in the bag, and plan the open-air sights, such as the Campanile and the lagoon islands, for the dry mornings. Daylight lasts a little over 11 hours in mid-month, so the last visits should start while it is still light.

November is clearly colder, with the shortest sunny stretches of the three months. October sits in the middle: still comfortable for long walks, but with the most rainy days of the three.

What to do in Venice in October

Doge’s Palace and the St. Mark’s Square Museums

The Doge’s Palace belongs to the St. Mark’s Square Museums single ticket, which also includes Museum Correr, the National Archaeological Museum of Venice and the Monumental Rooms of the Marciana National Library. The public entrance is at Porta del Frumento, Piazzetta San Marco, and the MUVE APP audioguide is included in the ticket price. In a month with grey and showery days, this is a full indoor day.

Two special visits run by reservation only, for a limited number of visitors. The Secret Itinerary covers the rooms where the Venetian administration did its work, and The Doge’s Hidden Treasures leads through the Doge’s private rooms in the wing next to the Basilica. Book these ahead, before fixing the rest of the day.

The Campanile and the Basilica of St. Mark

The Campanile elevator gives wide, quiet views over the square and the city. October’s short sunny spells make the view worth saving for a clear hour, so go up when the sky opens rather than at a fixed time.

The Basilica visit includes the Pala d’Oro and the museum and loggia for the Horses of Saint Mark.

Murano, Burano and Torcello

On Murano, some of the island’s glassworks let visitors watch glass-blowing. The Glass Museum is there too. Burano has the Lace Museum, where lace-makers’ techniques can be watched live by reservation, so book before the trip.

The Burano and Torcello itinerary includes the Church of San Martino, the Lace Museum, the Torcello Museum, the Church of Santa Fosca and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. A long ramp connects Burano to Mazzorbo, where visitors can enjoy the park. Leave this for a dry day, and go early since daylight is short.

Gallerie dell’Accademia and the museums for a wet day

The Gallerie dell’Accademia holds the most important collection of Venetian painting from the 14th to the 18th century, in 24 rooms. It is a natural plan for one of October’s rainy days.

Palazzo Mocenigo, devoted to the history of textile, costume and perfume, is another indoor option, as are Ca’ Rezzonico and Carlo Goldoni’s House. The Rialto Bridge visit is free and takes on average 20 minutes, a good fit for a dry gap between museums.

Cammini veneti walks on October 24 and 25

It falls on a weekend near the end of the month, so it suits travelers who want to leave the museums for a day on foot.

The Lido of Venice also offers bicycle touring, the Venetian lagoon and its beaches, nature and art and culture. Bring walking shoes for either plan.

Is Venice busy in October?

The big crowd events sit on either side of October. The International Film Festival is held in September, and the Regata Storica takes place on the first Sunday of September. Carnival comes in February and March. For Carnival, the city transport company plans for more than a million people across 18 days, with daily peaks of about 150,000, and Piazza San Marco entrances are closed once the capacity limit is reached.

Whatever the month, the special Doge’s Palace tours are by reservation only and for a limited number of visitors, so reserve them before the trip.

Guests staying in hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in the municipality must pay the Tourist Tax, collected by the facility manager. It applies the municipal rate to the number of nights per person, for a maximum of 5 consecutive nights for non-residents, and it is not subject to VAT. A separate access fee for the historic city aims to discourage unplanned day visits. It applies only to the historic city, not to the minor islands, so check its status for your dates.

Can you swim in Venice in October?

The sea near Venice averages 66°F in October. That is a monthly average, and it is cool for swimming. September’s sea is warmer, at 73°F, and November’s drops to 60°F.

The Lido of Venice is the place for the Venice beaches. Check the forecast for wind and swell on the day.

What to pack for Venice in October

October asks for layers and rain gear: mild afternoons, a night low of 51°F (11°C) and rain on seven days.

  • A warm sweater or light jacket for evenings, when the temperature falls to 51°F (11°C)
  • A compact umbrella or a waterproof shell for the seven rainy days
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the Burano to Mazzorbo ramp and the Cammini veneti walks
  • Printed or saved confirmations for the Secret Itinerary, the Doge’s Hidden Treasures tour and the Lace Museum demonstrations, which are by reservation
  • A day plan that fits 11 hours of daylight, with sunglasses for the few bright hours of sun

What to know before visiting Venice in October

The Museum Pass gives access to the Doge’s Palace and the combined itinerary of Museum Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. It also covers Ca’ Rezzonico, Palazzo Mocenigo, Carlo Goldoni’s House, Ca’ Pesaro, MUVEC, the Glass Museum on Murano, the Lace Museum on Burano, the Natural History Museum, the Fortuny Museum and the Torcello Museum. That suits a trip with several rainy-day museum visits.

A single ticket for Palazzo Mocenigo, Ca’ Rezzonico and Carlo Goldoni’s House is valid 3 months, for one entry per museum, so those visits do not need to be on the same day. The Doge’s Palace also offers a dog-sitting service, bookable via web and app, for visitors with pets.

Is October a good time to visit Venice?

Yes, October is a good time for travelers who want museums, churches, glass and lace in mild weather. It is a weaker choice for sunbathing or swimming.

Shifting four weeks earlier brings warmer afternoons, more sun and fewer rainy days in September, plus the Film Festival and the Regata Storica on the first Sunday. Shifting four weeks later brings colder days and far less sun in November.

If you want swimming, pick September, when the sea is warmer. If you want museum days, October works, since the Doge’s Palace, the Accademia and the Murano and Burano museums are all indoors. If you want to walk, aim for the weekend of October 24 and 25, when the Cammini veneti excursions continue across the region.
