Yes, July suits travelers who want hot afternoons, a warm sea and a calendar of local festivals, with Catania reaching 93°F (34°C) in the afternoon.

Where to go in Sicily in July

Valley of the Temples

The archaeological park near Agrigento has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and covers almost 1300 hectares. That is a lot of open ground in July heat, so go in the morning. The festival of San Calogero in Agrigento runs from July 3 to 12.

Syracuse and Ortigia

The Greek Theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the Grotticelle Necropolis are in the historic center of Syracuse. On the island of Ortigia stand the temple of Apollo and the remains of the Temple of Athena. Start with the open-air sites early and keep the shade of the town for later.

Plemmirio Marine Park

The park extends for about 7.5 miles (12 km) around the Maddalena Peninsula and is split into three zones. Swimming, diving and sport fishing are allowed in most of it. July’s warm sea makes snorkeling an easy plan here.

Zingaro Reserve

The reserve lies between San Vito lo Capo and Scopello and can only be explored on foot. It has five well-marked trekking routes, and you can also rent an inflatable boat or book a boat excursion. In July, walk at the start of the day and save the boat for the heat of the afternoon.

Madonie Regional Natural Park

The park covers 39,941 hectares in the province of Palermo and has been recognized as a geopark since 2001. The area offers widespread hospitality, which makes it an easy base for days spent in the park.

Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù

These three are UNESCO sites. Cefalù has cultural and musical events, such as the Estate cefaludese, throughout the summer, so a July evening there can include a concert.

What to do in Sicily in July

Valley of the Temples in the morning

The site’s sanctuaries, necropolises, fortifications, agoras and underground aqueduct network spread over almost 1300 hectares, with the address on Via Panoramica dei Templi in Agrigento. In July that area is hot and exposed. Arrive when the gates open and finish before the afternoon peak.

Sere FAI d’estate runs in Agrigento from July 3 to August 29. The program is a reason to stay for the evening after a day at the temples.

Hiking the Zingaro Reserve

Enter from the north gate at San Vito or the south gate at Scopello. Five marked routes cross the reserve, and five museums dedicated to traditional activities, such as bluefin tuna fishing and giummara weaving, are inside it. With highs in the 90s elsewhere on the island, take the early hours for walking.

Boat rentals and excursions give a way to see the coast without the walk.

Snorkeling at Plemmirio

Entrance 27 is a strategic point for snorkeling and diving.

Check which zone you are entering before getting in the water.

Taormina Greek Theatre and Castle

The Teatro Greco Romano is at Via del Teatro Greco 40 in Taormina. The Castle of Taormina offers a free digital audioguide for smartphones, so bring headphones and charge your phone.

The castle also has a bookshop. Visit in the morning, when the climb is easier.

July festivals and food events

Cefalù’s Estate cefaludese fills the summer with cultural and musical events.

Is Sicily busy in July?

July carries a full festival calendar: San Calogero in Agrigento from July 3 to 12, Gioiosa Gustosa from July 24 to 26 and Sere FAI d’estate running into August. Expect busy evenings in those towns on those dates.

Book rooms early for festival weekends. Taormina lists hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments, resorts and holiday rentals through its hotel association. For quieter stays, farm stays in the Nebrodi, mountain huts on Mount Etna and the widespread hospitality of the Madonie are options away from the main resorts.

Palermo charges a tourist tax for a maximum of four consecutive nights, paid by those staying in accommodation or short-term rentals who are not registered in Palermo. Caltanissetta’s tax takes effect on January 1, 2027, so it applies to a July 2027 stay there.

Can you swim in Sicily in July?

Yes. August is warmer, at 81°F near Palermo and 79°F near Catania.

Plemmirio allows swimming, diving and sport fishing in most of the reserve, except Zone A. The Zingaro reserve offers inflatable boat rentals and boat excursions.
