Sicily in August: Hot Afternoons, Warm Sea and Evenings at Agrigento

August in Sicily suits anyone who wants beach days and archaeology together, with a sea near 81°F (27°C) at Palermo and temples, theaters and marine reserves within reach.

The heat sets the schedule. Catania’s afternoons run hotter than Palermo’s, so sights belong in the morning and the water in the afternoon, and summer events and evening openings give the day a second half.

Where to go in Sicily in August

Valley of the Temples, Agrigento

The Valley of the Temples has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The park covers almost 1,300 hectares, with sanctuaries, necropolises, fortifications and an underground aqueduct network, so it is a long walk in the sun. Sere FAI d’estate runs in Agrigento until August 29, which makes the evening a good time to be there.

Syracuse and Ortigia

The historic center of Syracuse holds the Greek Theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the Grotticelle Necropolis. On the island of Ortigia stand the temple of Apollo and the remains of the Temple of Athena.

Taormina

Taormina has the Teatro Greco Romano on Via del Teatro Greco and a castle with a free smartphone audioguide. The town also has hotels, B&Bs, serviced apartments and holiday rentals.

Zingaro Reserve

What to do in Sicily in August

Valley of the Temples in the evening

The Valley of the Temples is at Via Panoramica dei Templi in Agrigento. In August the Sere FAI d’estate evenings run in Agrigento until August 29, so check the evening program before choosing your visiting hour.

Cooler hours make the long site far easier to walk. Wear closed shoes with grip on the ancient stone and bring water.

Snorkeling at Plemmirio Marine Park

The Plemmirio Marine Park extends 7.5 miles (12 km) around the Maddalena Peninsula. Swimming, diving and sport fishing are allowed in most of the reserve. Entrance 27 is a strategic point for snorkeling and diving, and the park also offers walks and mountain bike excursions.

The park has three zones. In Zone A, you cannot swim, stop with a boat, fish or dive at any time of the year. Zone B includes the Grotta delle Stalattiti, the Grotta del Formaggio and the Grotta delle Corvine, so check the zone before you get in.

Zingaro Reserve by foot and boat

The Zingaro reserve has five museums dedicated to traditional activities such as bluefin tuna fishing and giummara weaving. They give the long walks a reason to stop.

You can rent an inflatable boat or book a boat excursion. Book the excursion early in the day.

Taormina’s Greek theater and castle

The Teatro Greco Romano di Taormina is at Via del Teatro Greco 40. The Castle of Taormina offers a free digital audioguide for smartphones, so bring headphones and a charged phone.

The castle also has a bookshop. In August, plan the climb and the open-air theater for the first hours of the day.

August events and summer festivals

In Cefalù, cultural and musical events such as the Estate cefaludese take place throughout the summer.

The Cefalù tourist office gives information on accommodation, restaurants, visit itineraries and nature excursions. It is a useful first stop if you want an evening plan.

Is Sicily busy in August?

August falls in the summer season, when Cefalù’s cultural events run and the Agrigento evenings continue to August 29. The Sicily tourism offer encourages green itineraries in areas overlooked during the high season, so inland parks are a way to find space.

In Palermo the tourist tax is charged for a maximum of four consecutive nights. It applies to people staying in accommodation facilities or short-term rentals who are not registered in the Palermo registry office. It has applied since May 17, 2014.

Can you swim in Sicily in August?

Yes, the water is warm in August. These are monthly averages, so a calm morning can feel a little different from an average day.

At Plemmirio you can swim in most of the reserve but never in Zone A. Entrance 27 suits snorkelers, and the Zingaro reserve offers boat excursions or inflatable boat rentals for reaching the water.
