Sardinia in November: Mild Afternoons, Rain and Nuragic Sites

Yes, November works in Sardinia for travelers who want mild afternoons, ancient sites and open-air walks without summer heat.

The month is also wetter, with about eight rainy days in Cagliari and nine in Olbia. The Benvenuto Vermentino in Olbia and the Festival della Bottarga in Cabras fall in October and September, so November plans center on sites and parks.

Where to go in Sardinia in November

Cagliari

The city has a tourist office on the ground floor of the Town Hall, via Roma 145, which is a handy first stop on a wet day. Parks, a botanical garden and museums give plenty to do between showers, and afternoons stay near 66°F (19°C).

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

Barumini is in the province of Sud Sardegna and is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological area. One ticket covers the nuraghe, Casa Zapata and the Giovanni Lilliu Centre. The site is open every day of the year, so November does not close it.

Asinara National Park

The park sits on the northwestern tip of Sardinia and covers five thousand hectares. Admission is free, and you reach the island from Porto Nuovo at Stintino or from Porto Torres.

Tharros

This ancient city lies between the sea and the ponds in the Sinis landscape. Phoenician colonists founded it at the end of the 8th century BC. The site offers guided tours and a bookshop. Go in the morning on a dry day, because the site is out in the open.

Laconi

Laconi sits in the middle of Sardinia, in a wooded area called Sarcidano. Its Aymerich park covers 22 hectares, a good place for a walk on a cool day. Sadali has an urban waterfall 52 feet (16 meters) high.

What to do in Sardinia in November

Su Nuraxi di Barumini with a guide

The nuraghe can only be visited with a guided tour. Tours leave every 30 minutes and last about an hour.

Casa Zapata is a 16th-century noble palace with a nuraghe under its floor, and the Centro Giovanni Lilliu hosts exhibitions. Each is a guided visit of about 30 minutes. The palace and the centre are indoors, which helps on a rainy afternoon.

Asinara trails and the Passaggio dei Fornelli

The trails cover five thousand hectares and can be done by mountain bike, on horseback, in an off-road vehicle or by tourist train. The Asinara donkey is the park’s symbol. The west coast plunges into sea stacks, while the east slopes gently with sand and rocks.

Entry is free. Check the boat schedule before leaving, since you can only get there by sea, and bring a layer for the crossing.

Cagliari parks and the botanical garden

Monte Urpinu Park suits families, picnics and strolls, with its main entrance on Via Pietro Leo. Monte Claro Park has paths for walking and jogging, with entrances on via Cadello and Via Liguria. These are good choices for a dry hour.

The botanical garden covers five hectares and was founded in 1866 by Patrizio Gennari. Cool days with temperatures near 66°F (19°C) make walking comfortable. The Park of the Rings, 45,000 square meters, looks over the seafront of the Sant’Elia district.

Nuragica and the Castle of San Michele

Nuragica is a multimedia and sensory museum experience on the Nuragic people, at via Roma 191 in Cagliari. It fits a wet afternoon.

The Castle of San Michele hosts exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events. It stands on Via Sirai, near via Cinquini.

Tharros in the morning

Tharros, abandoned in 1070, lies between the sea and the ponds. The area offers guided tours. With 10 hours of daylight in mid-November, plan a morning start and keep the afternoon for something indoors.

Rain turns open ground muddy, so wear shoes with grip. If the forecast is wet, switch to Barumini, where Casa Zapata and the Giovanni Lilliu Centre are indoors.
