June is the best month for a beach trip to the island of Sardinia. Afternoons in Cagliari reach 84°F (29°C), it rains on only two days, and the sea has just passed 68°F (20°C). May and September also suit a mix of sightseeing and swimming.
July pushes afternoons to 89°F (32°C) and August brings the warmest water of the year. Winter is mild but wetter, and the sea stays cool for months.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia?
For most travelers, late May through June is the sweet spot. Afternoons are warm without the full heat of July, rain is rare, and the sea is on its way to swimming temperature.
For the beach, June is the first month when the sea passes 68°F (20°C). July and August are warmer still, with August water at 78°F (26°C). September keeps the water near 76°F (24°C), so a late-season beach trip works well.
For sightseeing and walking, May is a good choice. Afternoons in Cagliari reach 75°F (24°C) and May has about four rainy days. Asinara, an island park reached from Porto Nuovo at Stintino or from Porto Torres, has trails over five thousand hectares. You can cover them by mountain bike, on horseback, in an off-road vehicle or by tourist train, and admission to the park is free. A mild day is the better choice for that kind of outing.
For a food or wine trip, the dated festivals fall in September and October.
- If you want the beach: June to September, with the warmest water in August
- For sightseeing or walking: May and June
- For a food and wine trip: September and October, around the festival dates

*Long-term monthly averages.*
The year runs from mild, damp winters to a hot, almost rainless July. Air figures cover January to July, and sea figures cover the whole year.
Two months stand out. April is the first month with real warmth at 68°F (20°C), but it is also the rainiest of the spring months, with about six and a half rainy days. By June the rain has nearly stopped, with two rainy days and afternoons at 84°F (29°C).
July is the hardest month for anyone who dislikes heat. Afternoons average 89°F (32°C) and nights stay near 68°F (20°C), so plan sightseeing for the cooler hours and keep the middle of the day for the water.
When can you swim in Sardinia?
The sea passes 68°F (20°C) in June, at 70°F (21°C). It stays above that through October, at 71°F (22°C). In May the water is at 64°F (18°C), and in November it falls to 66°F (19°C).
These are monthly averages, so early June can feel cooler than the figure and late June warmer. The same holds at the end of the season: October starts closer to September’s 76°F (24°C) and ends closer to November.
From December to April the water sits between 57°F (14°C) and 61°F (16°C). That is a view-and-walk season, not a swim season.
When is Sardinia cheapest and least crowded?
Two events fall in September and October, in Cabras and Olbia. Cabras held its Festival della Bottarga over the weekend of September 18 to 20, 2026. In Olbia, Benvenuto Vermentino filled the week of October 5 to 10, and the organizers say the event involves the whole city for the entire week.
The cost is weather. January has about six rainy days and the sea stays cool, so swimming is out. Pack a rain layer and plan indoor stops.
Festivals and events in Sardinia through the year
Benvenuto Vermentino in Olbia
It included guided tastings by AIS sommeliers at the Museo Archeologico di Olbia on October 5 and 6 from 5 p.m. and a conference on Sardinian cork there on October 8.
The festival opens to the general public with entertainment on the weekend. Check the city’s calendar for next year’s dates.
Festival della Bottarga in Cabras
The 2026 festival started on September 18 at 8 a.m. and ended on September 20 at 11:59 p.m. That puts it in the warm, swimmable weeks of early autumn, when the sea is still near 76°F (24°C).
Cabras is the host town. Because the festival falls over a weekend, plan to arrive on the Friday. Check the town’s calendar for the next edition.
