Where is San Gimignano and what is it like?
San Gimignano is a small fortified town halfway between Florence and Siena. It sits on top of a hill in the Val d’Elsa.
The best way to see it is to wander through its alleys. Outside the walls there are countryside stays, such as Hotel Le Colline, 0.6 miles (1 km) from the medieval town.
The Palazzo Comunale was built in 1288 and houses the historic seat of the Civic Museums. The Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte is one of the oldest churches in the historic center.
What is there to do in San Gimignano?
Torre Grossa and the Civic Museums
The Civic Museums have three poles: the Palazzo Comunale with the Pinacoteca (picture gallery) and Torre Grossa, the Complesso Museale di Santa Chiara, and the Church of San Lorenzo in Ponte. The Palazzo Comunale dates from 1288.
Torre Grossa is the tallest tower, over Piazza Duomo next to the Town Hall. Visitors can climb it for a unique view of the town.
The Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosts frequent temporary exhibitions dedicated to photography. Santa Chiara and San Lorenzo in Ponte are separate sites, so allow time to walk between the three.
The towers and the piazzas
San Gimignano has 13 original towers. The Salvucci Towers are twin square towers in Piazza delle Erbe, easy to find while crossing town.
The Thursday market is concentrated in the three central squares. That makes Thursday a lively day to walk through them, and a quieter day is easier for photos of the towers.
Piazza Duomo and Piazza della Cisterna also host the fair for the patron saint on 31 January. Piazza della Cisterna is also the address of Hotel La Cisterna.
Vernaccia wine and Tuscan food
The Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience is in the Villa della Rocca di Montestaffoli. During the Wine Fest, the Cassero della Rocca di Montestaffoli hosts food and Vernaccia tastings on Saturday evening with a DJ set.
At local tables, traditional dishes include pici with wild boar ragout, cured meats, schiacciata with olives and porchetta sandwiches. The Wine Fest adds masterclasses at the Loggia del Teatro dei Leggieri and a children’s space with games in Piazza Pecori.
Wine tastings at Agriturismo Cesani are available every day by reservation, so book a slot before you arrive.
Events through the year
The year opens with the New Year’s Concert at the Teatro dei Leggieri on 1 January. The patron saint’s fair follows on 31 January, and Carnival parades cross the historic center in January and February. San Silvestro tra le torri, the New Year’s Eve event, attracts guests from the whole region and beyond.
If you want views and art → Torre Grossa and the museums. With children → the Wine Fest play space in Piazza Pecori. For wine → the Vernaccia Wine Experience. Travelers looking for a long list of big sights will find a small town, built around 13 towers and three museum sites.
