How do you fly to Rome from the US?

Its railway station sits inside the airport area, so you step from the terminal to the platform without a taxi or a bus.

Frecciarossa high-speed trains stop at Fiumicino directly from the city centers of Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice, and this summer also Naples, with no need to change trains. That helps if you’d rather land in Rome and start elsewhere, or finish a trip in Italy and fly home from there.

The FL1 regional train also runs from the airport to Roma Tiburtina in 48 minutes. Pick whichever station is closer to your hotel.

How do you get from the airport to Rome?

The Leonardo Express is the simplest option. It runs non-stop between Fiumicino and Roma Termini in 32 minutes, with a train every 15 minutes. It leaves Termini from 5:20 a.m. to 10:35 p.m. and leaves the airport from 6:08 a.m. to 11:23 p.m. The ticket costs 14 euros. Four tickets bought in one transaction cost 40 euros under the Minigroupes fare, where four single tickets would cost 56 euros. Luggage, even bulky, carries no supplement. Children under 4 travel free, and one child aged 4 to 11 travels free with each paying adult.

Metrebus integrated tickets are not valid on the Leonardo Express, so buy a separate ticket. The Trenitalia ticket counter at the airport is open every day from 6:45 a.m. to 10:12 p.m. If your flight lands late, the 11:23 p.m. departure from the airport is the last Leonardo Express to count on. Various bus companies also link Fiumicino to Rome from terminals 2 and 3.

Can you get to Rome by train, bus or car?

By train, Frecciarossa services reach Fiumicino airport from Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice, and the FL1 regional line runs from Fara Sabina to Fiumicino Aeroporto. FL1 trains leave every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on holidays. Children up to 12 travel free on FL1 with a paying adult.

If Orvieto is on your route, its railway station is in Orvieto Scalo, at the foot of the cliff. A funicular or a local bus takes you up to the center. The funicular runs from the station car park to Piazza Cahen, where two electric minibuses continue. Drivers can park at Campo della Fiera and ride escalators or a lift up. Piazza del Duomo is then about 2,600 feet (800 meters) away.

How do you get around Rome once you arrive?

The daytime surface network has 363 lines and runs from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (last departures).

Driving in the center takes planning. On Fridays and Saturdays both daytime and night-time ZTLs (limited traffic zones) are in force. The daytime Centro ZTL is active from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Tridente ZTL runs from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. The daytime Trastevere ZTL operates from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on both days. At night, Trastevere and San Lorenzo are restricted from 9:30 p.m. to 3 a.m., and Centro and Testaccio from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on Friday and Saturday.
