Ravenna sits a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, in the heart of Romagna. It suits travelers who want eight UNESCO World Heritage monuments and a 22-mile (35 km) coast with nine beach towns in the same trip. Bologna Airport is 53 to 56 miles (85 to 90 km) away.

Where is Ravenna and what is it like?
Ravenna is in Romagna, a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. Bologna Airport is 53 to 56 miles (85 to 90 km) away, Rimini Airport 43 miles (70 km) and Forlì Airport 19 to 22 miles (30 to 35 km).
The territory around the city is the second widest in Italy. It runs out to a coastline of 22 miles (35 km) with nine beach towns, from Casalborsetti to Lido di Savio. More than 200 beach establishments line that stretch, and the beaches are confirmed Bandiera Blu.
In the city center, a Zone of Silence holds Dante’s Tomb, the Quadrarco of Braccioforte and the Basilica of San Francesco.
What is there to do in Ravenna?
The eight UNESCO monuments
Ravenna has eight monuments declared UNESCO World Heritage sites. They are the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Neonian Baptistery, the Chapel of Sant’Andrea (also called the Archiepiscopal Chapel), the Arian Baptistery, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Mausoleum of Theodoric and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe.
In summer, some of these monuments open to visitors at night under the name Mosaico di Notte.
Eight sites make a full program for anyone who loves history.
Museums, ruins and the Darsena
The Domus of the Stone Carpets holds over 400 square meters of polychrome mosaics and marble slabs decorating fourteen rooms. The TAMO mosaic museum is in the 14th-century church of San Nicolò. The MAR, the Ravenna Art Museum, is housed in the 16th-century Loggetta Lombardesca.
The Rocca Brancaleone fortress, of Venetian age, has a garden and an arena for outdoor performances. The Planetarium stands inside the public gardens. The Ancient Port of Classe and Classis Ravenna are also on the list of places of interest.
The Rasponi Crypt and the Roof Gardens of the Provincia Palace overlook San Francesco Square, close to the Zone of Silence. For an evening, the Darsena area behind the train station has pubs and open spaces with street art murals.
Ravenna’s beaches
Nine seaside resorts share the coast: Casalborsetti, Marina Romea, Porto Corsini, Marina di Ravenna, Punta Marina Terme, Lido Adriano, Lido di Dante, Lido di Classe and Lido di Savio. You can play sports, eat, go on excursions and join guided nature visits.
Marina di Ravenna has a tourist harbor with more than 1,000 moorings. Punta Marina Terme is known for its thermal establishment, which stands right on the beach. Lido di Savio is the closest resort to Mirabilandia.
At night, the beach establishments turn into open-air venues with restaurants, dancing evenings, concerts and free events. Beaches Brew Fest takes place on the beach of Marina di Ravenna, and Spiagge Soul has livened up the summers for free since 2009. Summer is the season for all of it.
The Covered Market, piadina and food festivals
The Covered Market, at Piazza Andrea Costa 6, reopened in 2019 as a center of food and wine commerce and cultural meetings. Its counters sell piadina, salumi, bread, fresh pasta and butcher’s cuts, and you can buy products or eat them on site.
A piadina tasting also starts from the market, with the meeting point at Piazza Andrea Costa. In mid-April, Bell’Italia, Bella Romagna fills the squares of the center for four days with more than 20 food stands open all day. Giovinbacco brings more than sixty wineries and one hundred wines.
Ravenna suits travelers who want monuments and a beach in one place, and food lovers who like a market to graze in. If you want a long list of hours and prices before leaving, ask a tourist information office, since the sights above come without them.
Where to stay in Ravenna
Ravenna itself has accommodation, and so do the coast and the countryside around it. The city suits monument visits on foot, and the lidi suit beach stays.
The choices run from hostels, bed and breakfasts and luxury hotels to spa resorts, farm stays and campsites. Local terms include affittacamere (rooms for rent), agriturismi (farm stays) and case e appartamenti per vacanze (holiday houses and apartments). Lido di Savio has the largest number of accommodation facilities of the resorts and is the closest to Mirabilandia.
How do you get to Ravenna and get around?
Bologna is connected to Ravenna by trains and shuttles, Rimini by trains and buses, and Forlì by car or public transport.
By train, Ravenna is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Bologna and about 1 hour from Rimini on Regional Trains. The lines are Ferrara to Rimini, Bologna to Rimini and Faenza to Rimini. By car, the A14 highway leads from Bologna and the SS309 Romea highway from Venice.
Once in town, the historic center has a limited traffic zone (ZTL). The train station is only 656 feet (200 m) from it, so you can reach the center on foot from the platform. If you rent a car, leave it outside the ZTL.
When should you go to Ravenna?
May and June are the easy months. Highs reach 74°F (23°C) in May and 82°F (28°C) in June, with lows of 57°F (14°C) and 64°F (18°C). May has seven rainy days and June has four, so you can plan the monuments in comfort and still reach the beach in June. In mid-April, Bell’Italia, Bella Romagna draws a food crowd, though April has eight rainy days and a high of 64°F (18°C).
July is the hottest month in the figures at 87°F (31°C) and has about four rainy days. It suits beach stays and the summer nights of Mosaico di Notte, but long walks between monuments get tiring. January is the month to skip if you dislike cold: highs of 45°F (7°C), lows of 35°F (2°C) and five rainy days.
