Things to Do in Puglia: Castel del Monte, Alberobello, Lecce and Otranto

Puglia packs a lot into one region: a castle built by Frederick II, whole streets of trulli, a cathedral with a mosaic floor and a long coast of beaches. Start with Castel del Monte and the trulli of Alberobello, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, then head south to Lecce and Otranto.

What are the best things to do in Puglia?

Castel del Monte

Castel del Monte is a UNESCO World Heritage site built by Frederick II.

Check the opening hours with the site before you go, since none are listed here. Pair it with Trani, whose impressive Cathedral is another stop for the same day.

The trulli of Alberobello

The trulli of Alberobello are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Locorotondo has a belvedere with a panoramic view of the Itria Valley, a natural second stop on the same route. The Itria Valley Circuit is a 7 day route for those who want to explore the area slowly.

Lecce

Lecce has the Castello Carlo V at Via XXV Luglio, 52. The Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud is at Piazzetta Baglivi, 4.

The historic center also has artisan studios, some with a masterclass, and street food. Walk the center on foot, stopping at a workshop between the castle and the foundation.

Otranto

Otranto has a Cathedral with a mosaic floor and an Aragonese Castle. Both are worth a slow visit.

Nearby Corigliano d’Otranto has the Volante Castle, and a lesson in the ancient Griko dialect is on offer there. Skip the castle if you’re short on time, and keep the cathedral.

Gallipoli

Gallipoli has an Angevin Castle, churches and palaces in its historic center. Purità Beach and Baia Verde are also in the town.

Combine the old town with a beach stop, since both are in the same place. Spend the morning among the churches and the afternoon on the sand.

Ostuni

Ostuni has the Museo Civico e Archeologico at Via Cattedrale, 15. A little outside town, the Parco Archeologico e Naturale di S. Maria di Agnano lies on the Ostuni-Fasano road at Km 878.11.

The park is on a main road, so a car makes the visit simpler. The museum sits in town and fits a walk through the center.

Polignano a Mare

Largo Gelso is a piazza in Polignano a Mare where the Statue of Domenico Modugno stands. It’s on Lungomare Domenico Modugno.

The piazza is on the seafront promenade, so it works as a stop on a stroll along the water.

When is the best time to visit Puglia for sightseeing?

In Bari, winter highs run from 55°F (13°C) in January to 60°F (16°C) in March, and January brings seven rainy days, so plan indoor stops like castles and museums. In April highs reach 66°F (19°C), and by May they’re near 75°F (24°C) with fewer wet days, which suits sightseeing on foot. June and July reach 83°F (28°C) and 87°F (31°C), with only two or three rainy days a month, so start early and finish sights before midday heat. The regional routes run from 7 to 10 days, which gives a sense of how long a full tour takes.

Beaches and outdoor things to do in Puglia

The Salento has some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches. In Gallipoli you’ll find Baia Verde and Purità Beach, and Punta Prosciutto lies along the Ionian coast. Ostuni has seven lots for free beaches with services: Pilone, Cala Rosa Marina, Monticelli, Villanova, Gorgognolo, Costa Merlata and Torre Pozzella.

At Torre Guaceto you can explore the reserve by bike and snorkel in the Marine Protected Area. The Foresta Umbra is an ancient beech forest and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Around Ceglie Messapica and Cisternino, e-bikes run along the Aqueduct Cycle Path and a mule track can be walked with donkeys.

The bay of Torre Colimena is home to the ancient Salina dei Monaci, where pink flamingos can be watched. In Taranto, traditional gozzi boats take visitors to see the two seas and the small islands of San Pietro and Paolo.

Day trips from Puglia

  • Best of the Salento: 7 days · 146 miles (235 km) · the southern coast

Things to do in Puglia with kids

Many of the region’s activities are hands-on. In Andria, a casaro shows how burrata is made on a farm in the Alta Murgia National Park, and in Altamura the ancient Santa Caterina bakery offers freshly baked bread.

Book the hands-on experiences ahead, and keep beach time for the morning in summer.
