The best months for Puglia are late May and June for sightseeing and a first swim, then July through September for a full beach trip.
Summer brings the wine festivals and the crowds, because beach resorts and campsites fill with Italian holidaymakers, and some campsites ask for minimum stays.

When is Puglia cheapest and least crowded?
High summer is the busy part of the calendar. Campsites get very busy then, and many impose minimum stays. Beach resorts are much frequented by Italian holidaymakers. The Appia Wine weekend in Brindisi falls on a weekend of strong draw for the city, together with powerboat racing days and a youth tournament. Borgo diVino in Cisternino attracts visitors from all over Italy.
The warm weather has arrived, and you can choose from many kinds of lodging, from trulli in the Itria Valley to masserie, to rooms in Bari Vecchia.
The trade-off is the water. In May the sea is 64°F (18°C), so swimming is for the hardy. The summer events are also out of reach if you travel in spring.
January is the month to skip for a beach trip: cool, with seven rainy days. It suits travelers who want towns and food and don’t mind packing a raincoat.
