What are the best things to do in Positano?
Santa Maria Assunta
The church of Santa Maria Assunta sits on the Piazza Flavio Gioia. It dates back to the 10th century and has a yellow and green majolica dome. Benedictine monks founded it around that time. A tavola of the Madonna con Bambino was found on the beach before the 11th century, and legend says that in the 12th century an icon of the Virgin spoke the words “Posa, posa”. The name of Positano is said to come from “posa”.
Entry is free, so the church fits into any walk through the center.
The MAR Roman Archaeological Museum
The MAR is a Roman maritime villa buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is now a museum, and the municipality lists it among its structures as the Museo Archeologico Romano Positano. A musical event is also held in its Cripta della Villa Romana on June 1.
Plan it as an indoor stop, handy on the rainy days that winter and early spring bring.
Spiaggia Grande
Spiaggia Grande is the main beach, and it is the best known and the largest. It has flown the Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag) for more than twenty years. It is also known as Marina Grande.
Reach it on foot from the center. Go in the morning if you want more room on the sand in the warm months.
Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods)
The Path of the Gods is a medium difficulty trekking route of about 5 miles (8 km) connecting Nocelle to Agerola. It runs between Agerola and Positano, and the path is 3.9 miles (6.2 km) from Positano.
Wear shoes with grip and carry water.
Torre Trasita and the Saracen towers
The Torre Trasita is a 16th century watchtower. The Sponda, Trasita and Fornillo Saracen towers were all built in the 16th century as a defense against pirates. The Torre Trasita is a private residence, and you cannot visit the inside.
Admire it from outside as part of a walk. Skip any plan to climb it.
Palazzo Murat
The Palazzo Murat is an 18th century building, and its garden can be visited.
Santa Margherita and Maria Santissima del Rosario
Santa Margherita and Maria Santissima del Rosario are two more churches listed by the municipality.
