Positano sits on the Amalfi Coast, and for a beach trip the sweet spot runs from June into October, when the sea stays above 70°F (21°C).
The coast draws millions of visitors from around the world, and the town can get very crowded in the summer months. Picking the shoulder weeks of that swimming window is the way to get warm water with more room on the sand.

When is the best time to visit Positano?
For most travelers, June and September are the answer.
For the beach, plan on June through October. The sea reaches 73°F in June and 76°F in September, and it peaks in August at 79°F.
For sightseeing and walking, April and May suit best. April highs reach 68°F (20°C) and May highs 76°F (24°C), with only about four rainy days in May. For a quiet trip, those same spring weeks, or the fall weeks after the crowds thin, leave more space in town. Fornillo beach also draws fewer people than Marina Grande because it sits farther from the town center.
If you like festivals, September has Positano Premia La Danza on September 6, and August has Ferragosto on the 15th. Mid-October has hosted the Positano Wine Fest.
- if you want the beach → June to October, with June and September the easiest weeks
- for sightseeing or walking → April and May, when highs run from the high 60s to the mid 70s °F (about 20 to 24°C)
- for quiet → spring and fall, away from the summer crowds and from the August 15 holiday

*Long-term monthly averages.*
The year runs from mild and damp in winter to hot and dry in midsummer. Highs climb from 57°F (14°C) in January to 89°F (32°C) in July.
Three months tip the year. April still sees six rainy days, May drops to four, and June has just two. May is also the month when highs pass 75°F (24°C).
January has nine rainy days and a sea at 59°F, which makes it a tough month for a beach trip. It suits travelers who want village festivals and cool-weather walks. July is the hardest for anyone who dislikes heat, with highs near 89°F (32°C) and very little rain to cool things down.
When can you swim in Positano?
The sea passes 68°F (20°C) from June through October. June averages 73°F and October still holds 71°F. May, at 66°F, and November, at 67°F, fall just short.
Those are monthly averages. In December the sea is down to 62°F.
Marina Grande and Fornillo are the two beaches to know. Fornillo is farther from the town center and usually sees fewer visitors.
When is Positano cheapest and least crowded?
Going off-peak means more room.
The trade-off is the water and the weather. Outside June to October the sea drops below 68°F (20°C), and winter brings more rain, with nine rainy days in January against one in July.
August is the month to avoid if crowds bother you. It brings the Ferragosto holiday, and the town can become very crowded in the summer months. What makes up for it is the sea at 79°F in August, and the quieter corners of Fornillo and Torre Trasita. The Amalfi Coast is also an expensive stretch of Italy, so booking ahead for summer is sensible.
Festivals and events in Positano through the year
January village festivals
In early January, Montepertuso and Nocelle host small local events. La zeppola più buona takes place at Nocelle on January 3, and L’arrivo dei Magi follows at Montepertuso on January 6.
Appicciamm’ a Befana, also at Montepertuso, takes place on January 11. These are local events, and winter is a time for walking, not swimming.
Spring and early summer
Festa di Primavera, put on by the Forum dei Giovani, is held on March 23. It is an early sign of the season, in a month when highs reach 62°F (17°C).
La Villa delle Meraviglie, a musical event, takes place on June 1 in the Cripta della Villa Romana. It falls just as the sea reaches 73°F.
Ferragosto and Positano Premia La Danza
Ferragosto is held on August 15, in the middle of the summer months, when the town can become very crowded. Book rooms and plan beach days early for that week.
Positano Premia La Danza, now in its 51st edition, is held on September 6. The sea is still at 76°F, so it fits easily into a beach trip.
Positano Wine Fest
October falls inside the swimming window, with the sea at 71°F. Check that the festival has set dates for your year before planning around it.
