Portofino sits on the Ligurian headland that divides the Golfo Paradiso to the west from the Tigullio to the east. It suits walkers, swimmers and anyone happy to spend a day on boats and coastal paths. Genoa’s airport is 28 miles (45 km) away, about a 45-minute drive.
The village has one road in and out, the SP227, and it gridlocks in summer. Parking is virtually nonexistent then, so plan to arrive by bus or boat. The ferries run April through October.

Where is Portofino and what is it like?
Portofino is on the coast of Liguria, on a promontory that reaches 600 meters. It rises to about 1,970 feet (600 meters) and marks the line between two gulfs, the Paradiso to the west and the Tigullio to the east. Genoa’s airport is the closest, and Santa Margherita Ligure is the nearest town with a train station.
The main street is Via Roma, which leads down to the sea. The small square everyone calls the piazzetta is officially the place of the Martyrs of the Olivetta. Around the village, the protected area covers thirteen kilometers of coast. Its trails total between 43 and 50 miles (70 to 80 km).
The village keeps buildings from several centuries. Castello Brown, the fortress above the harbor, was built by the Genoese in 1557.
What is there to do in Portofino?
Castello Brown and the lighthouse path
Castello Brown is a 16th-century fortress above the harbor. The Genoese built it in 1557.
A path leaves the castle for the promontory, where the Faro di Portofino stands at the tip. Check opening hours and ticket prices for the castle before you climb.
Go on a clear day, since the reward is the view of the harbor from above. The climb suits walkers and anyone who likes a little history with the view.
The piazzetta, Via Roma and the old churches
In July and August the piazzetta is packed from late morning until midnight. In May and June it is not yet overcrowded.
Visit in May, June or September if you want room to look at the churches and sit in the square. Crowds thin after the first week of September.
The walk to San Fruttuoso
The coastal hike from Portofino to San Fruttuoso is 3.4 miles (5.5 km) and takes about 2 hours. Park entry is free.
San Fruttuoso has a Benedictine abbey from the 10th century. Offshore, a bronze statue called Christ of the Abyss stands on the seabed. It is 8 feet (2.5 m) tall and was placed there in 1954.
You can also reach San Fruttuoso by boat from the Portofino harbor. The ferry costs €10 and takes 25 minutes. Boats run roughly hourly from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April through October, so walking one way and taking the boat back is easy to plan. Check the last departure before you set out.
Paraggi and the bays for swimming
Paraggi is the closest beach to Portofino, 1.2 miles (2 km) on foot, and you can swim there. Baia Cannone is nearer, about a third of a mile (500 m) away. It has no sand, no cabins, no showers and no lifeguards.
The small bay of Niasca is a cove where you can swim, even in the evening. Surfboards, canoes and similar gear can be rented there. Halfway between Portofino and Paraggi stands the Eremo di Sant’Antonio di Niasca, a hermitage. You can also rent a gozzo, a traditional boat, and go out to sea.
If you want a long walk and an abbey, choose San Fruttuoso. For a swim, Paraggi and Niasca fit better. Baia Cannone suits less anyone who wants sand and beach services.
Where to stay in Portofino
Splendido, run by Belmond, offers Signature Suites, Suites, Junior Suites and Rooms. For walkers, the Rifugio Escursionistico Eremo di Sant’Antonio di Niasca is a hiking refuge in the Portofino area.
In winter, base yourself in Santa Margherita Ligure or Rapallo, where more stays open year-round. Both are on the train line, and the ferry to Rapallo takes 30 minutes in season.
August is the busiest and most expensive month. Summer also brings concerts, outdoor cinema and yachting events that draw international crowds. A mid-September visit lands after the crowds thin.
How do you get to Portofino and get around?
Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) is the closest, 28 miles (45 km) away. Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Pisa (PSA) are alternatives, both about 2.5 hours away by train. Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino is the nearest train station, 2 miles (3 km) from the village. Other stations on the Genova-La Spezia line are Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Zoagli and Chiavari.
Bus 782 runs from the station to Portofino every 20 minutes in summer and every 40 minutes in winter. The ride takes 10 minutes and costs €1.50. Tigullio Trasporti buses serve all the municipalities and hamlets of the park. Useful stops include Camogli, Ruta, San Rocco, Nozarego, Santa Margherita Ligure, Paraggi and Portofino.
By car, the A12 Genova-Livorno motorway exits are Recco, Rapallo and Chiavari. Do not drive into Portofino in summer. The single road in and out, the SP227, becomes gridlocked. A filter is activated at Cervara, Santa Margherita Ligure, during the day. In the evening and at night it moves to the Portofino town center.
The Golfo Paradiso ferry company runs seasonal services from April through October. Fares from Portofino:
- Santa Margherita: €6, 15 minutes
- Rapallo: €8, 30 minutes
- Camogli: €10, 30 minutes
- San Fruttuoso: €10, 25 minutes
Operators include Trasporti Marittimi Turistici Golfo Paradiso and Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio.
When should you go to Portofino?
May, June and September suit most visitors. May reaches 72°F (22°C) in the afternoon and June 79°F (26°C). September stays warm at 77°F (25°C), and crowds thin after its first week. In May and June the piazzetta is not yet overcrowded.
July and August are hotter, with afternoons near 84°F (29°C) in both months. They are also the busiest, and dinner reservations are needed days in advance. August is the most expensive month, so it suits those who want the full summer scene.
October still has 69°F (20°C) afternoons, but the seasonal ferries stop after that month. In winter, January afternoons reach 52°F (11°C), and Santa Margherita Ligure or Rapallo make better bases.
