What is there to do in Parma?
The Pilotta and Parma’s art
The Pilotta complex includes the Teatro Farnese, the Galleria Nazionale, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, the Biblioteca Palatina and the Museo Bodoniano. It all sits at one address, so a single visit can cover several of them.
The National Gallery houses works by Correggio and Parmigianino, including the Schiava turca, and La Scapigliata by Leonardo. Correggio also painted the frescoes in the Camera di San Paolo, a room in the ancient convent of San Paolo at Strada Macedonio Melloni 3/A.
The Stuard Art Gallery shows Giuseppe Stuard’s collection, from the 14th and 15th centuries to the 20th. The Giordano Ferrari Museum Puppet Castle holds one of the most important Italian collections of puppet theater.
Piazza Duomo and Piazza Garibaldi
From there Piazza Garibaldi is the natural next stop.
The monumental area is about 10 minutes on foot from the station. That makes this a first-afternoon walk for anyone arriving by train.
Opera: Teatro Regio and Museo dell’Opera
At Piazzale San Francesco you can visit the Opera Museum and the Casa del Suono Museum. The Opera Museum is in Palazzo Cusani at number 1 and retraces four centuries of opera history.
Opera fans get the most from this block.
The Ducal Park and the summer festival
The Ducal Park lies behind the Pilotta palace. You can admire the ancient statues of Boudard and the Trianon Fountain, and see the Palazzo Ducale from outside.
A summer trip is worth timing around the festival, and the park itself is a free-form stop on any other visit.
Tortelli, anolini and Duchess Cake
Restaurants in the center serve tortelli d’erbetta and anolini. Elegant pastry shops offer Duchess Cake with coffee.
Autumn is a good time for food events. Settembre Gastronomico runs until November 4, and the Fiera del tartufo Nero di Fragno runs until November 8 in Calestano. November Porc runs from November 6 to 29.
Cibus, the international food fair, returns to Parma from May 4 to 7, 2027.
Where to stay in Parma
