When is the best time to visit Palermo?

For most travelers, May and October are the answer. Afternoons are warm without being hot, and the evenings stay mild enough for a late dinner outside. September works too if you can handle a high of 82°F (28°C).

For the beach, count on June through October. The sea averages 72°F (22°C) in June and climbs to 81°F (27°C) in August. By October it is still 73°F (23°C), which makes it a gentle month for a swim after a morning of walking.

For sightseeing on foot, April, May, October and November are the comfortable months. April afternoons reach 66°F (19°C) and November ones 68°F (20°C). The city’s markets are described as living, noisy spaces full of smells and humanity, and they are far easier to enjoy when you aren’t fighting the August heat.

For a festival trip, the dates are set for 2026. Easter celebrations run from March 29 to April 6, the Settimana delle Culture runs from May 9 to 17, and the Festino di Santa Rosalia fills July 2 to 28.

  • If you want the beach → June to October, with the warmest water in August
  • For sightseeing or walking → April, May, October and November
  • For a festival → Easter in early April, May 9 to 17 for the Settimana delle Culture, or July 10 to 15 for Saint Rosalia

*Long-term monthly averages.*

Palermo’s year is mild in winter and hot in summer, with highs staying near 60°F (16°C) from December to March and passing 80°F (27°C) from June to September.

Two months tip the year. May is the first month with a high above 70°F (21°C), at 73°F (23°C). October is the last one that stays comfortable, at 76°F (24°C).

August is the hardest month for anyone planning long days on foot. The high is 89°F (32°C) and even the night low is 75°F (24°C), so plan sightseeing for the early morning and spend the afternoon by the water.

When can you swim in Palermo?

The sea passes 68°F (20°C) from June to October, and it is at its best in August at 81°F (27°C). May, at 66°F (19°C), is just short of that mark, and November, at 67°F (19°C), is just under it.

These are monthly averages, so the start and end of the season feel different. From December to April the sea sits between 58°F (14°C) and 62°F (17°C), which is too cold for most people.

When is Palermo cheapest and least crowded?

The calendar sets the busy weeks. The Feast of Saint Rosalia, July 10 to 15, brings thousands of people to the city. The Festino events run from July 2 to 28, and the Easter celebrations fill March 29 to April 6.

Going outside those dates leaves the markets and the streets around the Quattro Canti easier to move through. If you want to be in the city for a festival, book your room well ahead.

Winter has a cost for beach lovers. From December to March the sea is 62°F (17°C) or colder, and afternoons stay near 60°F (16°C). Winter suits a city walk, but it does not suit a swim.

July and August are the hardest months for travelers who dislike heat. July reaches 87°F (31°C) in the afternoon. The reward is warm sea and the Saint Rosalia procession, which ends on the seafront with fireworks.
