The ticket office closes one hour before the museum does. That means the last tickets are sold at 6 p.m. on most days and at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The museum is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Thursday it is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Arnolfo Tower keeps shorter hours.

Thursday is the short day, with the museum and the tower both closing at 2 p.m. Plan a Thursday visit for the morning, or pick another day if you want an unhurried visit.

How to get to Palazzo Vecchio

Walking is the way to get around Florence’s center, and Palazzo Vecchio sits right on Piazza della Signoria. The main entrance is on the piazza. A side entrance is on via dei Gondi.

Driving into the center is a poor idea. The whole historic center is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with five sectors: A, B, O, F and G. In sectors A, B and O it is active Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A summer night ZTL covers all sectors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October. Car sharing vehicles, petrol or electric, may circulate even when the ZTL is active.

At the entrance, umbrellas, small backpacks and large bags must be left at the cloakroom, a free service. Students must deposit their backpacks.

What to see at Palazzo Vecchio

The museum is entered from Piazza della Signoria. The Salone dei Cinquecento is one of the areas reachable by lift. On the ground floor, the Tracce di Firenze section can be visited free of charge.

The Arnolfo Tower, 312 feet (95 meters) high, and the Camminamento di Ronda are part of the Tower and Battlements ticket. Both are separate from the museum ticket. Visitors with a backpack are asked to carry it by hand along the route, so a small bag is easier.

Is Palazzo Vecchio wheelchair accessible?

The museum is accessible except the Mezzanino, the Camminamento di Ronda, the Tower and some rooms used for educational activities. Visitors with locomotor disabilities should use the side entrance on via dei Gondi. The Salone dei Cinquecento and other areas are reachable by lift (door 75 cm, 30 inches) or alternative routes. Two wheelchairs are available free of charge at the cloakroom next to the ticket office. The Arnolfo Tower is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

What else to see near Palazzo Vecchio

The Uffizi Gallery occupies the first and second floors of a building constructed between 1560 and 1580 and designed by Giorgio Vasari. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and closed Mondays, January 1 and December 25. A single ticket costs €25 on the day of entry and €29 if bought before. Piazza del Duomo gathers the Cathedral, Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, the Crypt of Santa Reparata and the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Across the Arno, the Bardini Garden has views over the city. It combines a central baroque staircase to the Belvedere, an English wood and an agricultural part. The wisteria pergola is worth catching in flower. The garden is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on the first and last Monday of the month.
