*Long-term monthly averages.*
January in Naples is cool and mild, with highs of 56°F (13°C). Afternoons reach 56°F (13°C), and nights drop to 41°F (5°C). A light coat is enough for the day, and a warmer layer helps after dark.
Rain falls on nine days of the month, and the sun shines 3.7 hours a day on average. Treat the dry mornings as the time for outdoor sights such as Pompeii or the Vesuvius trail. Keep Castel Nuovo and the museums for the wet days. With 9 hours 32 minutes of daylight on January 15, an early start gives you the most of a day outside.
December is a touch warmer, with afternoons near 58°F (14°C) and a rain day more. February is almost the same as January, at 57°F (14°C) for the high, and a bit sunnier. The three months feel much alike, so a shift of four weeks in either direction changes little in the weather.
What to do in Naples in January
Castel Nuovo, the museum fortress on a wet day
Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, is a castle, museum and picture gallery. It houses the Museo Civico and hosts exhibitions. The visit takes in the Sala dell’Armeria, the Cappella Palatina (or di Santa Barbara) and the first and second floors of the southern curtain.
The castle has a trapezoidal plan with five cylindrical towers in a tuff wall. In the courtyard, look for the low-arched portico and the outside piperno staircase by Guglielmo Sagrera. Check opening hours before you go.
MANN and Gallerie d’Italia in the city center
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN) is at Piazza Museo 18/19. Gallerie d’Italia is on Via Toledo, at number 177.
At Gallerie d’Italia you can use a physical or virtual audio guide through the app, or be guided by a cultural mediator. If you want the app version, charge your phone and bring headphones.
Pompeii and Herculaneum in the short winter daylight
The Pompeii ticket includes the ancient city with its suburban villas (Villa of the Mysteries and Villa of Diomedes). It also includes Villa Regina in Boscoreale, with its Antiquarium and a shuttle bus. The Pompeii Plus ticket adds Oplontis, Villa Arianna, Villa San Marco, the Archaeological Museum of Stabiae and Boscoreale. The Pompeii Artebus shuttle links all the sites.
Herculaneum Park has the Archaeological Area, the Theater, the Villa of the Papyri, the Antiquarium and the Boat Pavilion. In January the daylight is short, so go early and choose a dry day. Thematic itineraries (Civic Pompeii and Daily Pompeii) last about 1.5 hours and cost €8 plus the entrance ticket.
Vesuvius Great Cono trail
The Great Cono is nature trail no. 5. It starts at the square at 1,000 meters above sea level in Ercolano. The round trip takes up to 2 hours on the shortest route and 3 hours on the longest. From the square you can see the northern slope of Mount Somma.
The trail takes at most 360 hikers per hour, and the high route on the crater summit is closed to visitors. Save the hike for a clear day, since January has nine rainy days. Bring a warm layer, as the starting square is high above the city.
Procida by SNAV hydrofoil
SNAV hydrofoils connect Naples to Procida with daily departures all year round. SNAV boats also link Procida to Ischia, at the port of Casamicciola. The company is based at Stazione Marittima, Molo Angioino, in Naples.
This makes Procida a day trip you can plan even in January. Pick a dry, clear day and check the departure times with SNAV before you go.
Is Naples busy in January?
The city’s patron saint festivals run from June 1 to October 17 in 2026. The festivals have grown from 12 events with 26,000 participants to 22 with 50,000 last year, and this year there are 26. The city describes its tourism as constantly growing.
Book your room before you fix the rest of the trip, and confirm opening hours for the museums you want.
The tourist tax is charged per person per night, up to a maximum of 14 consecutive days. It is due from non-residents over 14 years of age staying in accommodation in Naples. The 2026 rates are €1 above the base values in force at the start of the year.

- A waterproof jacket or compact umbrella, for the nine rainy days.
- A warm layer for evenings, when lows reach 41°F (5°C).
- A warm extra layer for the starting square at 1,000 meters on Vesuvius.
- A charged phone and headphones for the Gallerie d’Italia audio guide.
What to know before visiting Naples in January
The U.S. State Department rates Italy Level 2, Exercise increased caution, issued September 10, 2026, due to terrorism. It recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate. It also highly recommends buying travel insurance before you travel.
Check the opening hours and ticket rules for Pompeii, Herculaneum, MANN and Castel Nuovo before you go. Sansevero Chapel, also known as S. Maria della Pietà, is at Via Francesco De Sanctis 19/21 and is worth adding to a rainy day. Palazzo Reale, a museum at the edge of the old city, is another indoor option.
Is January a good time to visit Naples?
January works for travelers who want museums, ruins and a volcano trail with mild afternoons. It is a month for culture and walking, not for the beach.
December and February are close in weather. December has afternoons near 58°F (14°C), a rain day more and a warmer sea. February is a little sunnier and its sea is a touch cooler. Shifting four weeks either way changes little.
